Rating: Summary: Fabulous! Review: This book was fabulous! I was transported from my living room in NJ to the porches of South Carolina while reading this book. Pat Controy's recommendation peaked my interest (I am a fan of books set in the South) but Dot Frank's way with words has made me a lifelong fan. The story was told with strength and vulnerability - the author found a perfect balance of the two. I highly recommend this book!
Rating: Summary: A Joy to Read Review: I enjoyed this book immensely and have recommended it to everyone who will listen. It was hilarious at times (you are so witty), heartbreaking at others, but always entertaining and interesting. The only negative remark I can make is that I wish I hadn't read it so I could read it again! I've been waiting for your next book and would really appreciate your response as to when it will be available and the name of the title.
Rating: Summary: Livin' in da lowcountry, y'all Review: I just finished this wonderful book yesterday, the characters are in my head as if they're family. Having grown up in Charleston,I spent many a weekend on Sullivan's Island. The way Miss Dot describes the beach and surroundings are just right. My mother passed away six months ago at the young age of 48, we were best friends. Reading this book brought thoughts of her and my childhood racing into my mind. I work at WCIV-TV which is mentioned in the book during the hurricane , and momma always bought all my clothes from friend Nancee Rubin when she had her own shop Evelyn Rubin's, before she worked at Berlin's. As I read, I pictured the home of my childhood only blocks away from Susan's Victorian on Queen Street. I grew up on King. It was magical and it remnded me that momma's spirit hovers over and guards me and my two year old son as Livvie does for Susan. This is a wonderful book, I wish my mom were still here to share it with. We'd a laughed long and haaard, 'eah?
Rating: Summary: Surprise! Review: While browsing through the book section of my local wholesale club on a rainy Sunday afternoon, I came across Sullivan's Island. Normally, I would not purchase a book by an author I am not familiar with, but the description grabbed my attention.I truly enjoyed this wonderful little surprise find and would recommend it highly. It comes across at times as tough and real just as author Anne Rivers Siddons suggests. I like books that I can really get lost in and this is one of them. I laughed and I cried and I was sorry to see it end. It made for a great beach book. A little bit of everything. I absolutely will look to purchase more of Dorothea Benton Franks.
Rating: Summary: An oustanding new voice! Review: Dorothea Benton Frank is a outstanding new voice for women's fiction, acombination of the southern voice of Deborah Smith, the mainstream women fiction voice of Patricia Gaffney, and the humor of Jennifer Crusie. Although I have never visited Sullivan's island, the author's vivid descriptions placed me firmly in the Lowcountry. I am looking forward to the author's next book, which appears to be a sequel. It can't be published soon enough for me!
Rating: Summary: Sometimes life is a walk on the beach.... Review: Sullivans Island was an achingly beautiful, wise, humorous and tender story of a woman, Susan Hayes, who is going through a challenging time in her life. In coming to terms with all that is going on she shares her lowcountry upbringing on Sullivans Island in South Carolina, during the racially tumultuous 60's and 70's. Her mother neglects the children, feeling overwhelmed by the responsibilities of motherhood and an abusive husband. The children are instead raised by Livvie, a woman hired by Susan's father to look after "everything". Livvie takes charge and gives the children her heart and soul. Livvie teaches them about life and faith, in good and in bad times. This is a tale of coming to terms with who you are, how you got there and recognizing the past for what it was. This was an absolutely wonderful, heartfelt story. It is a story that touches your heart.
Rating: Summary: Sullivan's Island, A Lowcountry Tale Review: I have never been so moved by a book before. I laughed, hysterically, through a lot of the book, and cried some too. Living in South Georgia and having been to Charleston brings it closer to home. It really made me think that there's really nothing quite like family, dysfunctional or not. I loved it and was extremely disappointed when it ended.
Rating: Summary: Every Divorcee's Dream Review: Dot Frank's "Sullivan's Island" is a delightful book! Her main character is so upbeat and full of life, even in the face of some of the most humiliating of circumstances. For those of us who have been scarred by a divorce, this book is a confirmation that life not only goes on, but that one can emerge better than ever before! Yea, Dot! You have breathed life into an incredible cast of characters. I could barely put this book down. It was fascinating to see how each person in the book progressed from one chapter to the next. I laughed and cried. I wish this author would hurry up and write her next book. Miss Dot...if you're listening--- get on with it!
Rating: Summary: Mr.SC Beach Review: Growing up near Sullivan's Island as a child in the 60's, I fell in love with this book. I could identify with everything, including the hurricaines, climbing over the fort, and getting in trouble with island kids. It's a book for ladies and gentlemen.I can't wait until Frank's next book is available. Great Beach Book for this summer! Buy it...you'll be glad you did!
Rating: Summary: A great summer read..... Review: I bought this book after reading Anne Rivers Siddons' book "Low Country", and was searching for another "beachy" book. Not only did this book accomplish that but the characters also stayed in my mind for several days after completing the book. If you are looking for a light summer read I would recommend this one. You can hear the waves in the background as you're reading! :)
