Rating: Summary: Some plot elements lacked depth.... Review: Although I basically liked the heroine of the book, Susan and admired her strength to overcome obstacles in her life, I thought the book didn't spend enough time on certain issues. I had hoped for a different outcome to her father's mysterious death. I found it odd that all of her life she had searched for the truth and when she discovered who had murdered him, she was satisfied enough with that when it seemed out of character for such a strong woman not to have demanded some sort of justice. Also, her romantic involvement with Simon as an adult could have been given more attention since the reader was kept in suspense about him throughout the entire story. Some events and characters just seemed to come out of nowhere as if she were looking for page filler and the end was too rushed. Overall, it was an entertaining book but I hope that more time is spent proofreading her next novel...there were a few blatant errors in this book.
Rating: Summary: A Nice Change Review: I read many books each year since I have a daily 3-hour commute. This book was a delight and I found it a nice change from many others that I have read. I very much liked the style of the author, the humor, the characters had depth and purpose to them, the story is interesting, and the reader certainly can related to the reactions of the characters when they responded to their situations and lot in life. It's a great first book and I hope that we see more of the same from this author!
Rating: Summary: Reader from West Virginia Review: Lighten up reader from Connecticut who said Sullivan's Island is pure dreck. (I can't find the word dreck in my dictionary) I am presently reading Sullivan's Island, have researched the Gullah (that's why I bought the book), and was myself a child when Susan was a child. I believe her. I am an avid reader, not an editor, therefore I can readily overlook small discrepancies such as you mention. The story is the most important factor here--and the story is certainly a GOOD ONE.
Rating: Summary: One Star Says It All! Review: This is the very last time I will buy a book based on other author's opinions. I didn't like it. Period.
Rating: Summary: Small Review: Small would be the correct word to describe the reader who said the "small errors" in the book lessened her enjoyment. Why be so petty? The book is on the NY Times list - not bad for a first try. Makes you wonder why the "READER from SULLIVAN"S ISLAND" is such an angry person - looks like a personal vendetta.
Rating: Summary: Magical trip to Sullivan's Island Review: This book was wonderful! The beautiful language used by the author was a refreshing change from all of the cookie cutter books on the shelves lately. Paralleling Susan's life (the main character) during the Civil Rights movement in the 60s and at the turn of the millenium was genius!Cannot wait for Ms. Frank's next masterpiece!
Rating: Summary: Wonderful read, didn't want it to end Review: This is the type of book I am always looking for. It is definitely the best book I have read in the past few months; a pleasant, funny read. Susan is the best friend we all want to have. You long for the beach, not just for vacation but to live there always.
Rating: Summary: It's good, but - - - Review: Ms. Benton-Frank has been living in New York City too long - she has forgotten that we in the South use the word "y'all" to refer to a group of people, not one person. Also, she has her main character's age wrong - if she was 16 in 1963, she would be 49 in 1999, not 46 as stated. And, she had the husband from Columbia in one chapter, then Greenville in another. These small errors kept me from enjoying the book completely, but the story was interesting, even though she tried way too hard to convince the reader that she knew all about the lowcountry and Sullivan's Island.
Rating: Summary: Attention Holder Review: This book made me laugh and cry from the beginning, and I hated to put it down. The author really knows the area around Charleston and describes it beautifully. I loved the characters and felt that I got to know and understand each of their personalities. It made me long for the coast! I look forward to the next book by this author.
Rating: Summary: Outstanding story Review: Fans of Anne Rivers Siddons and Pat Conroy will love this story. It takes the best of both authors and sets this tale in Sullivan's Island. You will laugh and cry along with Susan, and I swear I can smell the salt air and feel the sand beneath my feet...
