Rating: Summary: She's in My Heart, She's in My Head Review: I just finished this book today. I swear this author lived parts of my life! The dialogue between her and her teenage daughter could have been taken directly from my life. I experienced many similar things as this author in my life journey. If I could put it on paper as well as she, I would be writing a book right now instead of a review! This is a great book. I want more. I may read this one again while I'm waiting.
Rating: Summary: Absolutely Wonderful! Review: Once I started Sullivan's Island, I knew I would hate finishing it. It opened with a bang and kept me guessing the entire novel. I have always loved novels set in the deep South and felt that this would definitely rank up there with the best (i.e. Pat Conroy). I cried, I cheered, I laughed and I loved... What a wonderful story!
Rating: Summary: BIG Disappointment! Review: Usually, when I read well-known author's comments on a book I'm considering purchasing, they ring true, however, not in this case. Makes you wonder if they even read Sullivan's Island. I was very disappointed. When an author goes from the past to the present and back and forth and back and forth, it's a real turnoff to me. I gave up after a few chapters.
Rating: Summary: I Really Enjoyed This Book! Review: This is a great read. It has a little something for everyone. Family relationships are a real focus. Dysfunction abounds. I loved the historical content. There is also a lot of healing and lots of love to give. It took a lot of work to overcome some feelings. I liked the sisters and how they can share their feelings. I highly recomend this book. It is a great credit to the author.
Rating: Summary: A great beach read Review: I live and grew up a stone's throw from Sullivan's Island, and I was delighted to find a book that is chock full of the local color and flavor of Charleston's barrier islands. The author does a wonderful job of evoking the laid-back atmosphere of the Island that exists so close to the often stifling formality of Charleston proper. The characters were instantly recognizeable to me as "true locals",and I particularly enjoyed all of the segments set in the present day. I was a little impatient, however, with the parallel plot, a murder mystery set against the backdrop of the civil rights movement. All in all, it was an entertaining read-ideal for a beach vacation. I loved the voice and humor of the narrator-the author's real gift is evident in her ability to create such a believable and likeable heroine.
Rating: Summary: I didn't want it to end! Review: Sullivan's Island was the best book I've read in a long, long time. I feel like I grew up on the island and shared in the adventures of the Hamiltons. I will miss them now that I'm finished. This was a great first novel for Mrs. Frank and I hope not the last.
Rating: Summary: Right up there with the best! Review: The cover picqued my interest (I had never heard of this author) so when I picked it up and started reading, I was hooked! It is a wonderful book, straight from the heart about family life, and could pertain to anywhere. My only issues are that the author keeps making comments about "Protestants" and "Yankees" both of which I am. Also, her relationship with her teenage daughter seems "too good to be true." Maybe in the South that is the way it is, I really don't know. But I just love this author and her whole style of writing. I will RUN to get her next book!
Rating: Summary: Sullivan's Island Review: This book is captivating. I read it twice;once in sequence and once in date sequence. Customers not raised in the South and particularly in that era near the coast would not understand it as well as those of us who experienced life at that time in the South. Mrs. Frank does leave us wondering and puzzled about certain events and characters but there is only so much that can be included. The book was wonderful. I have recommended it to friends from SC seacoast who lived there during that period. What more can we desire that to be kept spellbound and not want to put it down. Good writing.
Rating: Summary: Run...don't walk Review: I echo the sentiments of all the other 5 star reviewers. Sullivan's Island is truly a wonderful novel...so run don't walk to get a copy. Read slowly as you will not want it to end. Be sure to check out Dorothea's web site...it is very interesting, and she mentions that she is already writing her next low country novel, Plantations.
Rating: Summary: Sullivan's Island Review: This book will HIT HOME with anyone born and bread in the true South! It brings back all of those "growing up days" close to the ocean and marshes of the South. We all had friends like those in the book when we were growing up. What a start to a new career in fiction for this writer A Must Read!
