Rating: Summary: Down home comfort, love, family, and laughter and tears. Review: Having grown up in this area during the same time as Dot Frank, I felt just as if I were walking the beaches, the Malls, and the streets of Charleston with her. Her feelings of love, doubt, and comfort in her home roots are shared by those who grew up in the Low Country.
Rating: Summary: Great Read Review: I really loved this book. Its story is very reminiscent of Pat Conroy's Prince of Tides. I personnally liked the style of presenting the story in two different decades pointing out that our present lives may be more affected by our past than we like to believe. My favorite part of this story was the relationship between the two sisters. I will be sending this book to my sister for I am sure she will recognize us in these pages just as I did.
Rating: Summary: Love life in the Lowcountry Review: If you love the South, especially the Lowcountry, this book is for you. I felt like I was there, and that the characters were people I knew. It is such a beautiful place, and Ms. Frank captures everything that's magical about Sullivans Island and the Lowcountry. I wish I had a Livvie of my own!
Rating: Summary: BRAVO! Review: Bravo to the author! This was a truly enjoyable read. It's been a long time since I laughed, cried, and thoroughly became absorbed in a work of fiction. This book is a must for the beach!
Rating: Summary: a pleasant passtime but not much more Review: At times this book is very amusing. The main character is often witty. There is a lot that is not believable about this book. The 13 year old voice in 1963 does not ring true, sounds like 1999. And, as one reviewer noted, if 13 years old in 1963, how can Susan be 46 years old in 1999? Kennedy was not murdered on a Friday but on a Thursday. Every now and then the author resorts to writing a murder mystery. It's as if she suddenly remembers she is supposed to say something about Big Hank's death. Don't expect anything great but enjoy a fast and ok read.
Rating: Summary: Note to readers: Review: "Thanks" seems an extremely lame choice of word to cover what I'm feeling these days because of your kindness and generous support. You have filled us with a rare joy - that is everyone involved in the writing, merchandising and sales of "Sullivan's Island". It's a group win for all of us! We are simply astonished and profoundly surprised. But without people who like to read, who buy, swap and borrow books, this would all still be a dream for me. The reality is that you have all given my life new direction and purpose. I learn from all of your comments, good and not so good, as I struggle to become a better writer each day. The positive comments tell me that my work has moved someone - that I found a way to help somebody have a laugh, think about an issue, or show them a place they may not have known. They also tell me that my work was worth the time you took to review it - that it has some value. The overwhelming majority of the 3,000 plus pieces of e-mail I have received are the nicest and most humbling you could imagine and I struggle with whether to answer them right away or finish my second book. I thought this might be the most efficient way to reach many people at once, so here I am. Regarding negative reviews? Well, the Dalai Lama says - love your enemies, they're your best teachers. My mother would say that there are always people out there happy to criticize. Ella Wright would say - humph! I say - thanks for buying the book and I'll try harder next time. Please accept my most sincere gratitude for your thoughts and wisdom. Thank you one million times, 'eah?
Rating: Summary: Immensely entertaining! Review: I met Ms. Frank when she came to a booksigning in Beaufort and found her as delightful as her main character. If you're looking for a wonderfully entertaining read, a true "beach book" then look no further. It has some of the funniest scenes you'll ever read! (cassandra from beaufort)
Rating: Summary: It's a keeper! Review: Being a nasty ole Yankee myself, I thoroughly enjoyed my trip to Sullivan's Island via Ms. Frank's book. Her main character as a child reminded me of Scout in To Kill a Mockingbird...bright, sassy and vulnerable. Even though Livvie could be described as stereotypical, I loved her anyway. Strong, wise, compassionate... long live Livvie! (I can see Whoopee in the movie version) I didn't care about the flaws, because parts of this book had me falling out of bed laughing! (It's a good thing, Martha!) Thanks, Dorothea! Keep up the good work!
Rating: Summary: Five stars are not enough! Enthusiastically recommended! Review: Dottie Benton Frank transported me to Sullivan's Island, SC and there held me captive. My feelings were right on the surface at all times. I found myself either laughing outloud or weeping quietly and was thoroughly disappointed when the tale ended. Her characters were colorful and completely lovable. I want more from this very talented author!
Rating: Summary: Wonderful! And fun to read as well. Review: This book was excellent... it had me laughing the whole way through. She knew when to be serious and when to joke and tried, even in the most difficult situations, to find humor in life. I loved how she incorporated flashbacks into the novel instead of lumping all of it at the beginning and leaving us wondering why it was there in the first place. It also helped us to see where she was coming from. All in all, I loved this book! A definite recommendation to all my friends, and I will definitely be re-reading it down the road.
