Rating: Summary: Remarkable understaning for cultures is found in this novel! Review: Mr. Hughes has managed to write a fantastic, accurate book of LDS life and culture. I have been fasinated by the accuracy of 'Rumors of War' having spotted only one minor falicy of fact, a matter of uniform colors, which not in the slightest would effect the enjoyment level from the novel. I would not be at all suprised to find out that Mr. Hughes himself had served as a missionary in Germany at one point or another: I served in the Germany-Leipzig Mission and did in fact return after service to marry a lovely young LDS woman, and Mr. Hughes' understanding of the "German mind" is wonderful. A truly remarkable work of LDS fiction!
Rating: Summary: It beat Work and the Glory Review: Once I finished the Work and the Glory series, I was anxious to find some more LDS literature, and I always loved World War II stories, so I figured I'd give it a try. Well, once I got started I read the first 3 books in the space of one month! I'm now so involved in the plot of these stories and with these characters, I could swear I was one of them! Reading about the Bataan death march gave me goosebumps, I had heard little of this ghastly march, but these horrific stories really make me grateful for all that I have, I really wonder weather I could have lived through such horrors and I now greatly respect those that did. One thing that improved the book even more was the touches of romance Dean Hughes threw into the plot, I found myself in a hurry to get to another section about Bobbi and her struggles with her fiance and pofessor, this plot kept me all wound up, there was not a moment to lose interest, if one character was not in an exciting situation, you could be sure the others were! I really recommend this book, the only thing that may make you sorry for reading it is you will be amazed how time passes by so quickly as you read, and how much of the day you seem to miss, but don't worry, it definitely is worth giving up a few hours of the day!
Rating: Summary: You Have to Read This! Review: Out of all the LDS Fiction titles available today you MUST read this one! Just before World War II we find Alex serving a mission in Germany. He leaves when the war breaks out only to return to fight against Hitler's forces as a U.S. GI-Joe. His family also gets into the war in a way that shows the outstanding research and detail of Hughes, only it is very fast paced and a page turner!Read It!
Rating: Summary: This is the most amazing book! Review: This is the most amazing book! My sister gave me the book one Christmas and it took me a whole year to actually pick it up. When I finally did, I could not put it down. I read this book within two days and went on to read the rest of the series within a couple of months. This books takes you in the lives of a fictional Mormon family as they struggle through WWII. While the family is not real, all the events they participate in are. You will feel a range of emotions for what they, and those who actually did experience, went through. Once you read this whole series, I would recommend reading the Hearts of the Children series. It extends the story of the Thomas family, mostly the grandkids, as they live through the Vietnam War.
Rating: Summary: I've never loved learning about history so much! Review: This series is my favorite series I've ever read. The whole series is based on trying to help you learn and feel what it was like to live during World War 2. You not only get a feeling of what it's like in the U.S., but in the prison camps in the Phillipinesand Japan, the hospitals in Pearl Harbor, living inside Germany, and fighting outside of Germany. The first book of all the book is a little slower, because of character development, but I loved the second through the fifth books. I read all of them in 2-3 weeks. It is based on an family who are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. When the war first starts one son is serving a mission in Germany, and then through time one daughter ends up in Pearl Harbor, one ends up in the Phillipines during the Death march, and one in Germany on D-day and is a paratrooper. I learned so much, and fell in love with this family. The writer is so good that you feel so attached to this family. I have a strong belief that prayer, and strong beliefs in God can help get someone through a situation that is too hard of us without help from above to handle alone. This book has that kind of theme, and as you read you become overwhelmed with gratitude and thankfulness for every tiny thing you're blessed with. If you are not LDS, I think you'd enjoy the series, but the first one will be harder to understand, but push hard through it because the other books are well worth it!

Rating: Summary: Rumors of War (Children of the Promise, Vol I) Review: What a great book. I had a hard time putting it down. I couldn't hardly wait to read the next saga Volume II which I have just finished. I have spent some time in Germany and studied WWII history extensively during high school and college and when I lived in Germany for three years. I am looking foward to reading Volume III. This series capativated me more than the Work and the Glory Series, althought that was good too. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys history and reading about the trials of an LDS family living during the most trying time in our nations history.
