Rating: Summary: Very, very disappointed Review: I initally bought this book because many people seemed to enjoy the book. Normally, I would agree with the readers and their reactions toward a certain book. However after reading this book for myself, I thought I just committed chinese water torture upon myself. This book is ridiculously stupid. Definitely a book I would stray way from in addition to Gus.
Rating: Summary: Light, fun reading Review: I liked this book a lot because I really found myself rooting for Lucy as she stumbles through her relationships. Even though you could spot the ending from 10 paces, I was so excited to see how they got there. This book is perfect for light summer reading and I'd recommend it to anyone who likes the Bridget Jones genre--although I found Lucy more entertaining than Bridget.
Rating: Summary: Not a favorite of mine Review: I've read all of Marian Keyes books so far. In fact, I've picked up most of her books through the UK Amazon.com just to get a jump on the American publication date. So, I guess you could say I'm a fan of hers. However, I was disappointed with this book. You know how good directors tend to sell out a bit when they get popular? It kind of feels the same way with this book. It seems it's written for the masses and not from her heart. Oh well. It's certainly not a bad book, but when compared to her other works, i.e. "Last Chance Saloon" and "Rachel's Holiday", it just doesn't measure up in my opinion.
Rating: Summary: Good clean fun Review: Good paperback. Read it, forget it, give it to a friend. An entertaining tome.
Rating: Summary: Does everybody love Lucy? Review: This was my second venture into the words of Keyes. She's a talented writer--able to capture the essence of a woman's brain with accuracy and wit. Now, onto my specific review of LSIGM. Lucy's life isn't really in turmoil. She's got problems, but they're the problems of a million other women--chosing the wrong guy time after time, liking the 'bad boy,' dysfunctional family, partying too much, hating her job, etc. She's living the young, single life that happens in Seattle, New York, London, and a hundred other large cities. We like Lucy, no--we love Lucy, because we get a glimpse into her neuroses, and into her thinking as she realizes she IS neurotic. The claims of predictability are all to true, however. Read the first three chapters and you're pretty sure you can guess the ending--and unless you've never seen or read a romantic comedy, you're guess will be correct. Nevertheless, the unique laugh-out-loud writing kept me going and despite the unoriginal plot, I really liked the book. I didn't love the book, even if I loved the characters. I kept picturing the movie that ought to be made out of it--it seemed it was written with a movie in mind. I finished the book in two days, skipping ahead to the ending at one point and then going back to read the rest. My interest in the book almost waned, and it was going to be banished to the nightstand never to be read again. But I made it through the end and have to say that the book is a good, if not terribly insightful, read. It's great for a boring Tuesday night (don't give up your perfectly good weekend for it). A nice airport read perhaps. So, with that lukewarmish review out of the way, I do have to say that my next book is "Last Chance Saloon." Keyes is obviously good enough to keep me buying her books and reading them. She makes me laugh, for heaven's sake! And we all need a laugh now and again even if we know how the story goes. Predicability isn't all that bad--it's the laughter and the oh-so-believable characters that keep me coming back. Don't buy this book expecting a masterpiece. Buy it expecting to be simply entertained. It's not intellectual, it's not stimulating, it's not thrilling. It's just plain fun. Now, have at it!
Rating: Summary: A joy and a surprise... Review: Four friends seek out the most remote, and therefore the most reputable fortune teller in London. Although Lucy Sullivan does not believe her predicitions are at all believable, as her friends prophacies begin to "come true" she can't help but wonder.... The characters fleshed out wonderfully well, and I couldn't put it down. A wonderful summer read, rainy day read, any day read, with an ending that's not quite what you might have predicted.
Rating: Summary: I Love--er, LIKE--Lucy... Review: I was thoroughly charmed by this book. Some reviewers may criticize the character of Lucy for being too "stupid" to believe or to like, considering the transparency of the idiots she was attracted to, but I found the character, though frustrating, to be VERY believable. Sadly, many, many, MANY women are repeatedly attracted to bad boys/jerks, quite often as a result of their family lives growing up. And Keyes has the guts to bring co-dependancy issues out into the open in this book. To be honest, I wasn't fond of Lucy, she isn't a heroine, but I do appreciate the characterization because her actions and attitudes--from her disdain for her mother to her low self-esteem--were right on the money, very characteristic of a co-dependent (and some people I know...scary). I also like Keyes' writing style--witty and full of detail. My only criticism would be that the Chuck chapters were not necessary and could have easily been omitted. But best of all, I just adored Daniel's character to no end! (I only pity him because he's on his way to being the enabler of a co-dependent, poor thing!....LOL!)
Rating: Summary: Absolutely the best! Review: The book was amazing,i was in the same situation as Lucy,i was seeing a liar and a rat and the book made me realise that life goes on and there is true love out there and it might not be that far away! Every bit of the book applied to my life,so it was the help that i needed. The book is true to how people feel&what we get up. It also shows that some people are out to get what they can.it's a good girly book as it is funny the way she discribes men,she is brilliant,i couldn't stop reading it and when i finished it i wanted to cry,i didn't want it to end
Rating: Summary: "Lucy Sullivan Is Getting Married is Wonderful!" Review: I didn't order this book right away, and then figured I'd give it a chance. Well I'm sooo glad I did! It was fantastic. I really felt like I knew Lucy. She thinks just like all of us do. Her experience living with room mates...Dating the wrong men, She thinks out loud through the whole book. It is a GREAT READ!! I rate this book 5 stars, if you're into twenty something single life. But I'm in my early 40's and I still loved it. It's very real and down to earth.Go buy it! (I just started Marion Keyes first book "Watermelon" and it might even be better!!)
Rating: Summary: Big disappointment Review: This novel was billed as another "Bridget Jones," but it is nowhere near the quality of the BJ books. I was really looking forward to it because I enjoy this type of book, but I found myself repeatedly annoyed as I read it. The writing is weak, as is the main character, and I agree with some other reviewers that it is totally predictable. Finally, I realized that I didn't HAVE to read this book for any reason, so I just quit (though I glanced at the end to confirm that it was as predictable as I thought). I almost never give up on a book, but this one just wasn't worth my time.
