Rating: Summary: A Great Book Review: Lucy Sullivan is in for a huge shock! When she gets her tarot cards read she is told that she will be getting married within the next sixteen months! The problem is, she doesn't even have a boyfriend! And so begins the search for Mr. Right. Will it be gorgeous Gus? Or flirtatious Daniel? Or maybe even her new co-worker Jed? I really enjoyed this book, even though so parts were a bit predictable, like the ending. However, it was still well written and very funny. Marian Keyes developes a wonderful, intricate plot that will keep you coming back for more. If you enjoy humor, romance, and a touch of mystery, you will love this book!
Rating: Summary: Did Not Like Lucy!!! Review: This is not the most horrible book that I've ever read, but after about 150 pages of Lucy's whining, I skipped through to the very predictable end. What I hated most was Lucy's rampant self-denial regarding her relationship with her parents, her overbearing roommate, and finally the men in her life. It all seemed like a contrived plot point to give the story a purpose. Lucy was more like a 14 year old girl with no self-awareness. ... I would only recommend this for young women who are graduating from young adult romances ...
Rating: Summary: Cute Story-- and Funnier than Most! Review: This is the only Keyes book I've read, so I won't judge it in comparison to her other novels. That said, this is a great book! The skeleton of the plot is a bit cliched, but the approach is not: Keyes is talented at making every line-- whether in narration or dialogue-- sound as though it is coming out of a cynical, witty, and loyal friend. Lucy, the heroine, is imperfect, but not in a way that makes us feel disgusted with her or ourselves, because she handles life's misfortunes with such humor. There is also a lot of discussion about depression and alcoholism, but the book is NEVER preachy, clinical or patronizing, as most books are when they try to "tackle issues." Instead, Keyes only serves to expand Lucy as a character, and to make her even more likable. But even the secondary characters are warmly and are so thoroughly drawn that we can see both their positive and negative characteristics without feeling as though anyone is specifically designed to be "good" or "bad," but simply human, and reactions elicited from the reader are human: We laugh when they say or do dumb things, we admire them for their arrogance, we detest them for petty things, we like who Lucy likes, and can relate totally to her thoughts and emotions on any given page of the book. This book is not just about romance, but also focuses on the friendships and personal growth that Lucy makes not just because the plot line demands it, but because such is life. And Lucy handles each situation with such humor and humility that you never think "There aren't any books that are written about people like me and my friends!" because this is precisely that book.
Rating: Summary: Light - Hearted Fun Review: Twenty-six year old self-pitying Lucy Sullivan will captue your heart and make you laugh in Marian Keyes' "Lucy Sullivan is Getting Married". Though the book is not serious or deep, it is light-hearted fun for women everywhere. Meet Lucy, who wallows in a dead-end job and lack of self-confidence. One night, she and three of her co-workers, the rich yet boring Hetty, the gigantic Meredia, and the laid-back sharp-tongued Megan, travel to the outskirts of London to have their tarot cards read. When Mrs. Nolan predicts that Lucy will be married within eighteen months, she sets out on a journey to find the perfect man, and learn a little bit about herself along the way. Throughout the book, Lucy fights to keep her head held high despite disastrous relationships, dealing with her alcoholic father, arguing with her self-confident roommates, and losing touch with her best friend. But when Lucy finally realizes she's met the love of her life, you will feel the joy and amazement with her, and will be left wanting more.
Rating: Summary: Not Keyes' Best Review: I LOVE Marian Keyes, she is one of my favorite authors of British "chick literature." But this one did not live up to the legacy of the Walsh sisters for me. Although Lucy was a likeable, "real" character, this story was a bit mundane and predictable. It is hard to finish a book when you've figured out the ending by page ten. Usually I find Keyes' books a fun filled journey with twists and turns along the way, not this time. It had a lot of the same themes as the Walsh sister books -- a twenty something woman who cannot meet the right kind of guy, who has a sorted relationship with her mom, and has lots of interesting, fun friends. Usually this is enough to make me read the book regardless of its predictability. But this one was slow, a bit dry, and a bit too verbose. It will definitely not stop me from buying all of the rest of her books as they appear -- and I eagerly await them. Especially more Walsh sister stories! This was one of Marian Keyes' first, and she has certainly come a long way. While Lucy is a character most women could relate to, the other characters as well as the story line just did not live up to her other work.
Rating: Summary: Mixed feelings... Review: The storyline was great and kept you on your toes throughout the book but the writing style left something to be desired. I felt that sometimes the descriptions were overly detailed and every single event that happens in the book goes into a flashback about the past. It made it sometimes torturous to try to get to the part you really want to read. Also, some of the characters were downright irritating. Although you are supposed to kind of love/hate them, you just end up hating some of them.. namely one of the boyfriends and roommates. Also, the author treats you like you are psychology idiot. The bouts with depression, alcoholism and picking bad men because of the example your father set are common themes that most people are familiar with. The main character treats them as though they had never heard of such phenomenon before. Not entirely believable. Therefore, I have mixed feelings. It kept me entertained but tortured me a little too.
Rating: Summary: Just too funny!!!!! Review: i could not stop laughing throughout this entire book. Although i feel i knew what the final ending was going to be fromt he beginning it was fun just getting there. after reading this i decided to read all of the books by this author. this was by far the best of them all.
Rating: Summary: A great read for the optimist in all of us Review: What can I say? I initially picked up this book because the title struck me as funny, but after I started reading the book, I could barely put it down. Few books have to ability to capture the essence of the main character the way that Keyes did. I honestly could see myself as Lucy, feeling what she felt, doing what she did. Let's be honest. All us girls have the tendency to fall for the wrong guy time and time again, which is why Lucy is so endearing to us. She was normal. She had roommates that she like to party with, and friends at work to commiserate with. She even had family drama to work out. She even had the very best friend in the world, Daniel, who is what we all want our best guy friend to be. I truly reccommend this book to every girl who this that she might be the only one who is struggling to find love, and just to anyone who wants a fun and light read. Keyes definitely knew what she was doing, adn I wish to see LUCY SULLIVAN in a theatre soon!
Rating: Summary: Great romance read Review: I normally don't read romance novels, but Marian Keyes was recommended by a friend. Her story telling is great and the characters are very well done. Lucy reminded me a lot of Briget Jones Diary. I really enjoyed this book and following Lucy and he love life.
Rating: Summary: Not heavy - Just fun Review: I really enjoyed this book. Yes, it's sort of corny, and boy-crazy, and predictable - but it was entertaining, funny, and just plain fun.
