Rating: Summary: Excellant! A surprising read! Review: Okay, so I just finished this up last night. Let me tell you, DO NOT be fooled by the cotton candy pink cover with it's cutsie little cartoon bride on it. I picked this up expecting a fluff piece, something to read in a day, nothing that would pull at my heart strings, dredge up old boyfriend and girl friend memories, remind of my own self-consciousness and self-doubt, etc etc etc. What did I get? A very deep look at what could have been myself, minus the problems with alcohol and family splits. It reminded me of my "single and stupid" days. The days when I lived for the nights. The nights when the person I thought was my best friend would always, SOMEHOW, forget that she only had enough money to get into the club and buy one round of drinks. The friend who ALWAYS offered to pay back but never did. And the nights filled with boys in bars who thought that they were Gods Gift and could never remember your phone number until it was 2:30 and their night spent at a different bar did not produce an adequate bed partner. Marian Keyes is witty, sarcastically funny, and a great story teller. I can't wait to read her other books!
Rating: Summary: I love Lucy! Review: I really liked this book, dopey as Lucy is, who hasn't known someone just like Lucy? Lucy keeps falling for the same loser over and over agin because the first love of her life (her Dad)is that loser. It was nice to see her get her wake up call, take her life into her hands and stop trying to fix "Daddy". Funny, smart and quick, hand out to all your friends who keep dating the same loser while they wonder why their relationships don't last.
Rating: Summary: I Wouldn't Even Give It One Star If I Didn't Have To!!!!! Review: I just read the other reviews and we can't be reading the same book!!!! I am shocked Ms. Keyes is usually a great writer and I absolutely love her other titles, however this one is HORRIBLE!!!! Lucy the main character is pathetic, needy, and way way too nuerotic for my taste. I am only halfway through the book and am still struggling reading it. She sets women back like 20 years, and I just want to scream at her!!!! She helps her father drink, makes excuses for every man in her life and although she is in her early 20's acts like a teenager and goes out every weekend and gets drunk and brings home strange men. Even her job is a joke, it sounds more like the type of jobs I had as a teenager then a young adult. But then again reading this book, she certainly isn't characterized like an adult in any sense of the word. I don't think I am even going to be able to finish the book, all I can say is thank god I didn't actually buy the book and only borrowed it from the local library.
Rating: Summary: Fun and intelligent chick lit Review: The title character of this book, Lucy Sullivan, is a 26-year old single Irish woman living in London. As the story opens, Lucy and 3 co-workers pay a visit to Mrs. Nolan, who is supposedly a "real" psychic. Initially, Lucy laughs off Mrs. Nolan's prediction that she will be married within the year (18 months at the outside), but when Mrs. Nolan's predictions seem to start coming true for her friends, she begins to wonder. When she meets Gus, an eccentric but fun partygoer, Lucy is almost certain that her fate has begun to change for the better. What follows is a romantic comedy with substance, wit, and intellect. At 400+ pages, the book is more well-developed than you will find in most books of this genre, although there were more moments when the story dragged just a bit. Some of the supporting characters (eg, the gay friend) and the outcomes (eg, girl gets boy) were a bit familiar, but this did not detract from the fact that the details were both original and entertaining. I found myself reading almost the entire book one lazy Sunday, becoming so engaged in the story that I couldn't put it down until I had finished. This was definitely an enjoyable read, and I'm looking forward to checking out the author's other works.
Rating: Summary: Very Good Chick Book Review: I would recommend this book. I was really great and it was a fun, fun read. Enjoy it!!
Rating: Summary: Terrific! Review: This was my first Keyes book and it didn't disappoint. The writing style was fantastic and it was easy to remember the other characters and the events taking place in their lives. Early on it was fairly obvious who Lucy would end up with but, I might be in the minority here, I loved the predictability. However, there were things about the book that I disliked, one of the main guys, for one. I just despised his character from the beginning. A lot of time was devoted to him and those were the times that I felt like putting down the book and not continuing on. I know he was there to prove a point, but he annoyed me to no end (a credit to Keyes writing, no doubt). I also wish that Lucy would have spoken up for herself more with Karen. The only other complaint is a general one; does every chick lit book have to have their character's jumping into bed so quickly? I'm in my twenties and not a prude, but I think the bed hopping is a bit too much already. It's either one night stands or if they date and don't have sex by the second meeting they're ready to jump out of a window. Enough already! That said I highly recommend LSIGM. I read Watermelon right after and while I liked it, I didn't find it nearly as enjoyable as Lucy Sullivan. I hope there's a sequel!
Rating: Summary: who does't love lucy Review: goodness gacious marian keyes! this was my second of your wonderful books.. Lucy is the type of character we can all see in ourselves until we start to see that which lies beneath; and yet still she isn't that far off the norm. the character of daniel remains constant but yet unvisible to lucy herself until she lives thru the unwitting horror that is the life of her beloved father, only to find that many of her own misgivings stem from a dysfunctional family. Again, i fall in love with the hero, daniel, without reservation and am only too satisified when lucy herself finds her own way.. bravo
Rating: Summary: I could not finish it. Review: I loved "Watermelon" so much that I read it twice. I really wanted to love "Lucy Sullivan is Getting Married" but it bored me to tears. It was pretty obvious, early on, who Lucy would end up with. I forced myself to read half of it and then I gave up. I skipped to the epilogue, confirmed the obvious, and called it a day. Oh well, hopefully "Rachel's Holiday" will be much better.
Rating: Summary: Not her best book, but really enjoyable Review: As lots of other readers have said, this may not have the deepest plotline, character depth etc. But all Keyes books are very funny, warm and keep you reading. You also end up re-reading all her books again and again. I would recommend any of her books, they are all very readable.
Rating: Summary: nothing special Review: predictable yet frusterating plotline and characters. nothing new here.
