Rating: Summary: I enjoyed the book, and will recommend it to my book club. Review: (My book club is for women reading women authors.) It is intriguing to read about how other people live, especially in another country. The characters are believable and mostly likeable. It is a short book but not terribly quickly read, as it makes one stop to think and absorb. I would like to read more by this author. Before reading the author info in the back of the book I didn't know the author is also a concern pianist. Well done!
Rating: Summary: bleah Review: A short unsuspenseful boring nothing story. I don't know what the reviewers liked, but I sure missed it.
Rating: Summary: Quite beautiful! Review: Any easy story with an interesting spin on what life requires in times of necessity. If you like human tales and Irish stories this is quite nice
Rating: Summary: Got it one-third through the book Review: Did they leave out the last page? Predictable plot very early on in the book. Intensely beautiful language, where else can you find "autochthonous" and "gallimaufry" used repeatedly in one little quarter-inch thick book? Stay away from those catalog book reviews!
Rating: Summary: Interesting and Different. Review: I found this novel to be very original. Haien's ability to write such a flowing novel about such a off the wall thought and idea for a story was nothing short of brilliance. She has proven to be a well thought out writer and deserves reconization for her work. I commend her on her endeavours and I hope to see more of her books out.
Rating: Summary: A tale of two readers Review: It's clear that those who commented on this book either absolutely loved it or absolutely hated it. Those who loved it describe it with such words as "touching", "lyrical" and "beautiful". Those who hate it say it is "boring" and "lacking in suspense". This should tell you that whether or not you will like this book depends solely on what you like in books. I agree that there isn't much in the way of suspense. That's not the kind of book it is. Its purpose was more to touch the heart in the way great works of art do. In that, it succeeds. I read "The All of It" three years ago and my memory of it now is more in the emotions it engendered and not in the details of the story. What are you in the mood for? Adventure? Look elsewhere. A look at what is inside people's hearts? You've come to the right place.
Rating: Summary: Did I miss something??? Review: Okay, the writing WAS exquisite, but it doesn't make up for the lack of plot. The concept was intriguing and the language authentic, but what the heck was the resolution?? So the priest catches a big fish at the end... Was this an allegory that indicated he had a relationship with Enda? I love a book with a message, but this one's was just too vague for me.
Rating: Summary: One of the most beautifully written books I have ever read. Review: One of those rare treasures -- a book that seems so small in the hand -- but each word is so perfect that it is actually a very very big book. Thought provoking with almost devastatingly beautiful language.
Rating: Summary: I'll Have None of It Review: Overwrought. Underwhelming. Far from finding it humorous, I instead smirked at times at some of the breathless, panting blathering by Enda. The fish tale was mildly interesting, but that's all it was, a fish tale. Makes me wonder mightily about all of these breathless, panting reviews here.
Rating: Summary: Not so pleased Review: Plain and simple...I just didn't see what all the "glorious reviews" were about. Was I reading the same book the other critics were? For as short a book as it was, it was a waste of my time. I'm a reader who needs more "meat" to a story line. Perhaps one that isn't so predictable either!
