Rating: Summary: An Oprah book that is actually uplifting! Review: It's about time Oprah picked a book that is a pleasure to read. Her books are so depressing--rape, childhood abuse, depressed women, oppressive men...ad nauseum. I read this book way before Oprah chose it and loved it. It's gotten to the point for me--if Oprah picks it--I won't read or buy it. What happened Oprah? This is a book about a strong woman in a man's world. True she is looking for her "lost love" but if you ignore that part, it's a great read.
Rating: Summary: ...astonishingly brave work Review: This heartfelt story, about a young latin america woman searching for identity while under the last vestiges of blighted imperialism, builds like a moolit tide during the harsh hurricane season. One cannot help but see parallels to the true life tragedy that has befallen Jennifer Lopez through her romance with Puffy Combs. Does this not remind one of the liason between the protaganist and her handsome yet brash suitor, Arthur Jenkins? Daugher Of Fortune closes with a fury and the reader is left with nothing but ringing in the ears as Allende's poetic themes come full circle. It is true, as the english matriarch, Mdme. Therwilliger says that "if you want to dance, you have to pay the band."
Rating: Summary: More of the same Review: Taking a page from her roots as a translator for Barbara Cartland novels from English to Spanish, Allende spins another romantic novel in the same mold as her previous works. A decent work, but certainly not 'brilliant' or 'genius' as many editorials have proclaimed. Provocative and sensual, yes. Angela Carter, no. She perhaps has some genius in cashing in on a distant relative, Salvador Allende, by keeping the name through marriages. If you have never read a book by her, please read this, you won't need to pick up another as they vary quite little in depth and scope.
Rating: Summary: very enjoyable Review: Great for a light read, captivating and entertaining
Rating: Summary: Triumphant! Review: This book was excellent in my opinion. The main character goes through so many life stages and heartaches, yet comes out triumphant in her own way -- yet, not in the way she planned. A fabulous look at the way society was then -- only the acceptable people are "acceptable." A Great Book!
Rating: Summary: Great Read for Evening! Review: I curled up last night with some Jasmine Tea, good piano music (John McArthur's, Hidden)and a great book, Daughter of Fortune. Superbly written, the novel transported me to Valparaiso and California and made for a great evening read. A must for Allende fans!
Rating: Summary: Beautifully written, evocative, character driven drama. Review: Isabel Allende so gracefully, and seemingly effortlessly, evokes the times & places of "Daughter of Fortune" that I found myself swept away with the tale, even though this isn't normally the type of novel I'd find myself staying up late with. The characters are colorful, and the settings successfully walk that line between historical accuracy and dramatic license, enough so that after I'd finished the book, I found myself missing it, wishing I had one more chapter to read. There was some lack of dramatic push at the end, as it sort of fizzled to a close, but the chapters leading up to the end (each like a carefully crafted short story), make the read well worth it. Perhaps I was a little affected by having met Ms. Allende shortly before reading this novel, so as I read, I could hear her voice in my head, narrating this romantic, sensual tale. (A very classy lady, I might add). Also, the bits of magic realism (or spiritualism?) in the book add just the right note... making Eliza & Tao's stories truly transcend the typical fare.
Rating: Summary: Bad, Bad, bad......
Rating: Summary: Harlequin Romance Review: ok if you are looking for a very light beach read
