Rating: Summary: Moving, wistful story Review: The simple story grabbed my attention, and the author's plot development and descriptions were very vivid. Somehow I kept hoping for the book to end happily, though I knew there was no way it could without being totally unrealistic. And after the book ended, I wished it would go on! This is my first time reading one of Shreve's books -- I'm sure I'll be delving into other books of hers.
Rating: Summary: What a page-turner.... Review: After reading The Pilot's Wife, I ordered three other Anita Shreve books from Amazon and I've just finished Resistance. A lovely story, fraught with emotion and tension, and oh, so utterly romantic and sad. I literally could not put this book down!
Rating: Summary: Pretty good tale Review: While not as spellbinding as the other WWII novel of the summer, THE TRIUMPH AND THE GLORY, or as good as her best effort, THE PILOT'S WIFE, Shreve's RESISTENCE is a good book, rich in drama and action. I like it.
Rating: Summary: Deserves more than 5 stars Review: A powerful story of love, betrayal and quiet courage captured in the grave, gray stones of occupied Belgium during WWII, told simply, with a gift for tapping the reader's deepest wellsprings of experience and emotion. Read this book slowly and steadily and be prepared to be moved.
Rating: Summary: An engaging, heartfelt story of love during WWII Review: This is an excellent book which I could not put down Ms. Shreve describes her character's thoughts in ways that show great insight into human nature. It seemed as if she anticipated the thoughts and emotions I would have under similar circumstances. She is an author whose books stay with me for days. I hate to see them end.
Rating: Summary: OK, not Great Review: This book was just O.K. Not a great love story, not a great WWII resistance story. The more interesting parts were of the other people, the husband, the boy, the storekeeper. There are parts in all of her books where the writing appears forced, the dialog false. This was more evident in The Pilot's Wife (which I wouldn't recommend). It only happened in this one a few times, just enough to strike a discordent note and make me realize I was reading. I hate it when that happens.
Rating: Summary: A Good read Review: Take it from someone who doesn't normally read or like his wife's books...This was worth it. It kept me up a couple of nights wanting to read more. This from a guy who usually read Tom Clancy etc. Slow steady pace get it.
Rating: Summary: Absolutely fantastic - until the end! Review: This book was a real page turner. Loved the character development - liked the historical aspect as well. I was very disappointed by the ending though. I would like to rewrite the ending myself!!!! I think Anita Shreve likes her books to end tragically (the only other one I have read is The Weight of Water) but in this case it was unrealistic as well.
Rating: Summary: An incredible, emotional tale. Review: This book is an incredible emotional journey. With both a harsh, realistic yet dreamy quality, this book details the ups and downs of love during war with painful clarity. It was beautiful and wonderful and sad all at the same time.
Rating: Summary: Delightful historical fiction Review: A well-written yarn set in WWII Northern Europe. Excellent descriptions and interesting plot twists
