Rating: Summary: Love and War Review: Though Resistance is not one of my favorite Shreve novels, it is still a compelling love story. Predictable as it seems, it still touches your heart, this man and woman in love in the midst of the world's most horrific war.The one true thing that the novel is lacking is detail about the war. There were moments in the book where I was so swept away by the romance that I forgot there was even a war going on. I think that Shreve could have done the events of the time more justice had she focused some on the concentration camps, the escape lines, etc. The hardships of the time could have been more enhanced had they been compared to the complexity and horribleness of the events surrounding them. Overall, it was a good book. Especially if you like other Shreve novels, you'll like Resistance
Rating: Summary: One star--just barely. Review: One of the reasons I read this book was that the customer ratings for it were so high. Readers referred to it as "haunting" and "the best WWII story ever." I'm truly mystified by these comments. I found the story elementary and ordinary and predictable. We didn't really get to know the characters well--especially the downed flyer. I thought he came across as insensitive and extraordinarily selfish. The "love" story struck me as entirely superficial. I liked Anita Shreve's The Pilot's Wife, but I could barely come up with one star for Resistance.
Rating: Summary: a beautiful story of love amidst tragedy Review: Claire is a housewife stuck in an unhappy marriage, working for the Resistance movement. Ted is an Allied pilot whose plane crashes in Belgium. Ted comes to Claire's house and Claire nurses him back to health. The two fall passionately in love while Claire's husband is away helping the resistance movement. Claire and Ted are a perfect example that you don't have to be fluent in language to be able to say "I love you". Sadly, the real world catches up with them, with tragic consequences for both characters. The final chapter will break your heart. I recommend this book for anyone who desires a good, hearty read.
Rating: Summary: One of the best WWII novels ever Review: I loved this book! It was VERY hard to put down, I think I read it in one whole day. It was an easy read, with very real characters and a love story that was completely true to life. I really liked how I felt like I was actually in Belgium, reliving this story that the main character is telling. I'm not big on war books or movies, but this was is definitely worth reading.
Rating: Summary: Pleasantly surprising Review: This was my first foray into Anita Shreve's repertoire, and I sincerely enjoyed "Resistance." It's a lovely, palatable story that doesn't go on too long. There is a nice blend of romance, American history, and Nazi horror. Shreve creates a very visible setting in Belgium (even to someone who has never been), and her characters continue to surprise the reader all the way to the end.
Rating: Summary: Romantic historial fiction at its best Review: If The Pilots Wife is the only Anita Shreve book you've read, please read this one. I actually put off finishing the bok for a few days so I could savor the characters a little longer. If you like historial fiction mixed with romance, you'll love this book.
Rating: Summary: Can't stop thinking about this book Review: Just finished Resistance today and can't stop thinking about it. A slow start but as the story unfolded, I couldn't put it down. And I thought The Pilots Wife was good!
Rating: Summary: One of Shreve's Best, But Michael Pietsch isn't co-author! Review: I'm a major Shreve fan, and her new Fortune's Rocks is, I think, her best. But Resistance is my next favorite. In this remarkable love story, Shreve captures the delicate balance between passion and loyalty that besets any romatnic triangle, but becomes so much more poignant set as it is in the world of anti-Nazi resistance, where both husband and lover are clearly good men. A beautiful book.
Rating: Summary: Resistance Review: Resistance was the fourth of Anita Shreve's books that I've read. I've just finished it, and find myself haunted by both the characters and the setting. It is an incredibly tense story, and each turn of the page is exciting and dreadful, as the reader becomes more and more afraid for the characters. When I reached the end, I simply sat down and cried. This book brought home to me, more than anything else, how fortunate we all are to sleep peacefully in our beds at night, quietly and without fear. A wonderful book.
Rating: Summary: SUPERB Review: Almost as good as Pilot's wife if not better. Shreve takes you into the minds of these WWII characters and make you believe you are there with them. A hard book to put down. especially after the last page.
