Rating: Summary: I never stopped smiling! Review: What a wonderful book! It was so humorous. The characters were well-developed and lovable (as well as hateable, whichever the situation called for). I would highly recommened it to anyone who enjoys funny, insightful, edge-of-your-seat, can't-put-it-down books.
Rating: Summary: 4.5 if I could Review: I would probably have given this book a five, but I read Sushi for Beginners, also by Keyes, right before Watermelon nad found it's writing to be a bit more tight and clean. I have heard Watermelon is one of her first works, and it is amazing debut if so! I was hooked from the first few pages.I will not go into what the book is about because all one hundred and something reviews do so. Claire, the protagonist, is a great character, someone I would love to be friends with. She is funny, intelligent, loyal, honest and witty. Her outlook on life is actually quite inspiring considering the relationship trauma she was put through. Her resiliency is amazing. I am hoping that Keyes either continues Claire's story at some points, or lets her readers know what has happened with her life in other books! The men in Claire's life and her relationships as well as her new baby are the focal points of this book. Her maturity towards her baby is fantastic as she realizes despite her husband leaving her, the baby must come first. It is also fun to see Claire's inner battles as she experiences a new relationship. Her outlook is so healthy and fun! Although this is a light, fluffy and fun read, it also manages to be deep and heartfelt. But Claire's sense of humor and wit manages to make the could-be-heavy scenarios less intense. This is a feel good novel that I would highly recommend. The Walsh family is a hoot, and I cannot wait to read more of Keyes books so that I can experience more of their zaniness and fun! I plan to read all of Keyes books from this point onward, and will buy them in hardcover because I will not be able to wait for paperbacks! I might even have to go to Amazon.com.UK so I can get them sooner then they are released in the US.
Rating: Summary: Good Summer Reading Review: Being a fan of the Brit Chic novel, I really enjoyed this book. Claire is a wonderful heroine -- she's been left on the day that she gives birth by her husband and so she goes to her native Dublin to hang out with her (so-hilarious-you-wish-they-were-yours) family. Her gorgeous, self-involved sister Helen, her other hippie flaky sister Anna, her sweet mother who can't cook, and her concerned yet slightly aloof father, all round out this novel to make a great story. This is the perfect light beach read, and at 417 pages, the book will last longer than a lot of other light beach reads.
Rating: Summary: Funny and Insightful Review: Watermelon was one of the few books that made me laugh out loud, on many occasions. I loved this book, and feel it was the best one that Marian Keyes has written. I almost whooped for joy when our character dumps her creepy husband, and cried with her during the sad moments. Read this book. (by Brenda)
Rating: Summary: High hopes and then ... Review: Starting the book was mainly fun but 2/3rds through it began to drag. At the end I just felt sorry for the main character and wondered why I am reading it. I am missing the last 15 pages and only am going to finish reading it because I hate to leave a book after 90% ... But never the less, if you like reading books and dont mind leaving it go after 60% it is fun to read ...
Rating: Summary: A good book Review: This book chronicles Claire's feelings as she is divorced by her husband. She came to terms with herself, her new baby and their perdicament. She even manages to find a betterside of herself and happiness as she embraces the challanges life has hoisted upon her. A good book, a light read and something you won't want to put down.
Rating: Summary: Just what I needed Review: ...to escape the winter doldrums! Once I got into it, it was hysterical. Claire learns important lessons about herself and gives her slimy soon-to-be exhusband James a taste of his own medicine. Now if she only do the same for her "evil" sister Helen.... I did think the ending was a little too perfect....suddenly they're all moving to London and everything's peachy? I was hoping she'd stay in Dublin and "return to her roots" so to speak. But overall a very good read and I look forward to more by the same author.
Rating: Summary: Couldn't Stop Laughing!! Review: I laughed until I cried... This is the first and the best of Keyes' books. I've read three of her other books, and they pale in comparison. "Lucy Sullivan Gets Married" is decent, but kind of long. Trust me, you'll laugh until you cry with this one.
Rating: Summary: Cute, funny, and sad. Review: Watermelon was a fun book to read -- I finished it in a day. But after reading Keyes's Lucy Sullivan, I was disappointed in Watermelon. Although both books had many of the same elements, I had a hard time relating to Watermelon's Claire. Claire's husband tells her that he is leaving her while she is in the hospital, having just delivered their first child. Claire flies home to her parents and sisters with her new baby and begins to heal. Only Marian Keyes can make a plot like this with laugh out loud humor. This is a book about heartbreak, survival and the importance of loving and supportive family.
Rating: Summary: A Great Read! Review: I really enjoyed reading this book which was my first introduction to Marian Keyes writing. I was reading it in a small book club but could not stop and wait for the others before finishing it. She has a refreshing style and I could not put Watermelon down! I can't wait to dive into the next Marian Keyes book!
