Rating: Summary: What an annoying book! Review: This book was lent to me when I broke my leg last month "to make me forget my pain." What pain? Claire, the narrator, is one of the most annoying characters I've ever met in fiction, self-absorbed, flighty, superficial, drunkard, shop-aholic, and we're supposed to sympathize with her antics? Not to mention her crazy sisters... The husband character in the story changes from being one of the most wonderful guys in the world to being a nit-picking jerk, which demonstrates either what a dim-wit Claire is at having so misjudged him, or a real flaw in the writer's skill. I stopped reading the book short of the last couple of chapters, it's just too painful!
Rating: Summary: Okay, but not great. Review: This was an okay read. I like her other books better. I also liked Good in Bed better for a similar type of book.
Rating: Summary: Juicy Summer Read Review: I LOVED this book a real page turner. I loved how Claire picks herself up and finds self worth. I found myself devouring each page and very well satisfied at the end. I've read Marian Keye's other novels- Lucy Sullivan is Getting Married and Last Chance Saloon before reading Watermelon. She's one of those authors where you look foward to future books.
Rating: Summary: This ones a charm!! Review: This is the first book I read from this author. It prompted me to go out and purchase the rest of her books.Marian Keyes writes so you are pulled into the story in the first few pages. I was recommended this one on a few book message boards so now I am hooked!!
Rating: Summary: This book got me into reading... Review: In bought this book in London's airport so I wouldn't be bored out of my mind flying back to the US. The original teal and hot pink cover caught my eye- I bought it purely for the eye-catching appeal. I read it on the plane all the way home and couldn't put it down until I was done. This story revolves around Claire. She hopes her pregnancy will save her failing marriage. Turns out Claire's hubby has been having an affair so Claire packs up and moves back home with her parents. She has a VERY hard time dealing with the divorce and the fact that she's become the size of a watermelon. Claire hits the rock bottom of depression (even while her parents tend to the newborn). The pieces of her life slowly get put back into place... she even finds love again! I loved this book! It's definately a Marian Keyes must read.
Rating: Summary: A getaway during rough times! Review: My brother was in intensive care in the hospital, and I had run out of reading material. I grabbed this book from the hospital book store, mainly because the picture on the front looked cute, and I love stories that take place in Ireland. During a rough time, this book kept me entertained and provided me with much needed comic relief. The changes Claire undergoes after her husband left her prove that with enough time, you can get through anything! A message that got through to me. I am looking forward to getting some more books from Marian Keyes to read during the rest of our hospital stay!
Rating: Summary: A pleasant surprise! Review: I got to the library 3 minutes before closing. I was desperate for something to read, and grabbed the first thing on the nearest shelf before they tossed me out. When I got this book home, I read the blurb on the back cover and made a face. Yeesh, I thought. It's a romance novel. (I'm not trying to anger any fans of that genre--but those books just aren't my thing.) But I launched into it anyway, and I'm happy to say that I did not put it down until I finished, at 2 in the morning. Ms. Keyes is a truly funny writer. It's a breath of fresh air to see a heroine in a rotten situation make good, sarcastic, fun of it. Oh, she goes through drunken binges and crying jags and acts like a jumpy moonstruck teen when her Prince Charming shows up, but the author/main character shines a light of spirited humor on it at almost all times. It keeps you from feeling that she is too wrapped up in her problems, and it also makes you laugh and think, "Yeah...I seem to remember acting like that one or twice, too. Good, it's not just me." It's not a deep book, but it's fast, breezy, and funny. If you want depth...well, it could be said to expose the human condition, and how changeable we are. I'm glad I grabbed this book. I could have done a lot worse.
Rating: Summary: Light summer read, Irish charm. Fun Review: Well, it's not great literature, but then no one promised it would be. And it's predictable and dredges up a host of Irish cliches for characters - but they're all charming or unrepentent or hilarious. And it's a bit too long, being essentially fluff. However, it's a fun read, it goes quickly, and you do - trust me - end up caring about the characters. Claire gives birth to her first daughter and is deserted by her husband in the space of a few hours. She hightails it back to her dysfunctional and wacky family in Dublin - dysfunctional as only an Irish family can be. There she retreats to the triple cure of vodka, exercise, and a younger man - and of course the wayward hubby comes crawling back with his, um, tail between his legs... It's a hoot and a half.
Rating: Summary: I Couldn't Put it Down! Review: This book is over 600 pages long and I read it in one day. You will finish this book in no time, and when it is done, you will want even more.
Rating: Summary: Fun, Interesting Flowery Read Review: At first I was a little turned off by the character's tone (always making little aside comments and digressing excessively) making it difficult to read the book with ease and without getting annoyed. But after awhile, you get used to the style. The story is engaging, funny and a light read. I will definitely try another one of Keyes books!
