Rating: Summary: a haunting, evocative story by a wonderful writer Review: Anita Shreve's work is always compelling, absorbing and a pleasure to read. The Pilot's Wife tells the story of an external tragedy as a way to unfold an internal betrayal -- a literary thriller that is almost impossible to put down! I also highly recommend Shreve's Resistance, The Weight of Water and Eden Close.
Rating: Summary: A wonderful, moving read, both gripping and tender Review: "The Pilot's Wife" is everything you want in a novel beautifully written, gripping, and intelligent. I loved the characters and the way the story unfolded. Ms. Shreve makes every scene jump off the page and makes every word count. It's called a thriller, but it's really about love
Rating: Summary: An enthralling story of death, life, love, and betrayal. Review: Bravo to Anita Shreve for THE PILOT'S WIFE. I have read and enjoyed all of Ms. Shreve's previous novels, and THE PILOT'S WIFE is no exception. Ms. Shreve's characters, and their reactions to the shattering events of their lives, were so believable--in what I consider to be an unusual but entirely plausible situation. THE PILOT'S WIFE will surely make any reader ponder both the strengths and weakenesses of their own relationships. I can't wait for her next novel!
Rating: Summary: Snort of Derision Review: I read this book several months ago, and I was so annoyed with the author's manipulative style. After Shreve's RESISTANCE and THE WEIGHT OF WATER, I was expecting something much better, so I'm very disappointed that Oprah chose this.
Rating: Summary: "Couldn't put this book down! Review: I stayed up all night reading this book. I could not put it down. The way the author manages to reveal the husband's secrets is superb. The writing is simple, clear, and direct and the characters beautifully drawn. I thought the scene in London was both shocking and deeply moving. This is one of the best books I have read in a long time.
Rating: Summary: Interesting plot. Review: I read this book a few months ago. It was about an air crash, but not what one might expect it to be. Instead of the violent aspect of the crash itself, it deals instead with the impact it has on the pilots family in the aftermath. Brings to mind two things that we all hear often and seldom heed: Things and people are not always what they seem. The other thing it makes me realize is that we should all treasure today, because you never know what tomorrow will bring.
Rating: Summary: An entertaining, quick read Review: This book was entertaining and believable. I was a little confused about who actually planted the bomb, but the rest of the story was cohesive. I felt the end of the book was appropriate and showed the depth of Kathryn's personality. Jack is also a believable character. Being abandoned as a child leaves scars that often manifest in covert behaviors. It would have seemed stranger to me if he had not been somewhat screwed-up. Kathryn managed a "normal" life because of the love of Julia.
Rating: Summary: Riveting Review: My sister had loaned me the book last July. I just picked it up to read on Monday as I was returning home from a trip. Once I started reading, I couldn't put it down. Read it straight through and enjoyed it immensely. I will be reading more books by Ms. Shreve. I would have liked to know more about Robert and Kathryn. Maybe a sequel?
Rating: Summary: This book is well written and the story is compelling. Review: It's the first time I've read this author. I agree with the reviewers, Kathryn was stiff...but likable. (Of all the characters, I especially liked Robert.) The story is fast paced, believable and touching. I'd recommend it to a friend.
Rating: Summary: This happened to me Review: I had not read any books by this author, but saw a review in a newspaper I seldom read and just had to read it.This happened to me. I was married to an airline pilot, who unknown to me, had another life going with a flight attendant. It wasn't quite as complicated as Ms. Shreve's story. There was no second family and no one died. However, she captured the feelings of disbelief and betrayal very well. I read it almost straight through. Once I reached the part where Jack was found to be involved with the IRA, I felt cheated. It was so unexpected and I was really disgusted by it. From then on I didn't care what happened as far as an explanation of his actions. It didn't matter. The ending was weak, but how else could it end? I hope that Kathryn got on with her life. She certainly deserved more than she got from this jerk!
