Summary: Thud! A big fat bore
Review: Okay, so there's sensationalism in airline disasters. That's probably the biggest reason I stuck with this slow and useless novel. The plot and resolution weren't even mildly believable.

How Oprah could pick this is beyond me . . . while I don't always like her selections, at least they're (usually) literary and thought provoking.

Summary: This book really deserves 0 stars
Review: Can anyone point to anything Jack and Kathryn had in common or ever did together besides "make love," which is mentioned every 5 pages or so and seems to be the only thing she misses after he dies? This book is carelessly written (for example, I don't think green is a primary color although it is referred to as one) and not researched all that well (is it a normal American reference to continuously mention "the Troubles" with no further explanation? And to say the British position is just "stupid"?) It's a shame this book is so incredibly lame, because The Weight of Water was really good but after The Pilot's Wife I'll never be able to stomach another of this author's novels.

Summary: I have never read a book so fast!
Review: Once you open the cover there is no turning back. Shreve holds you until the very end, never letting you down.

I completely ignored everything to finish this book it was so good. I would recommend it to anyone. I have never read a book so fast.

Summary: Thought provoking, fast paced read for the poolside.
Review: Although the plot was predictable, this book is one of those you'll want to finish in one sitting, once you start. Anyone who reads this should wonder for a bit whether they really know their loved ones as well as they think. Well written, with a somewhat far fetched ending.

Summary: Book was a disappointing read with unbelievable plot line.
Review: The Pilot's Wife is a frustrating read in that the main character, Kathryn is out of control in her own home from the first page. I am surprised that Oprah chose a book about a woman who is a victim, opening the door of her home to a stranger and allowing him to take over her life without asking important questions. Mostly the questions weren't asked so that manipulation of the reader and the suspense could continue to the last 75 pages of the book. Who could relate to a woman without a clue? This book is just not believable. I also resented the comment from the main character,a high school music teacher, that the best thing about a small school was the shortness of the awards assembly.

Summary: Stunning
Review: I started & finished The Pilot's Wife in one sitting. Stunned. Terrified. And realizing that Anita Shreve has made a very interesting point--just how well do we know our loved ones? What really compelled me to keep reading this story was the the characters were absolutely believable. I felt as if I was reading about anyone's family. All too often, characters are created--larger than life. Perfect. Or dastardly imperfect. Yes, Anita probably could have delved into the challenges that Kathryn & Mattie faced--especially with the ultimate truth that Kathryn discovers, but I think that the author wanted us to imagine these things for ourselves. While I haven't read all of Oprah's books, I do consider this one to be one of the best that she's recommended. It'll stay with me for a long time.

Summary: A quick read that makes you wonder
Review: After I saw Oprah rave about this book and ask the question 'How well do you know your husband' I had to read this. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and I feel like she was a girlfriend telling me what has happened in her life. I gave it to a friend who couldn't put it down. I look forward to reading more from this author.

Summary: Couldn't put this book down.
Review: I bought this book because I had read the author's The Weight of Water (also a must-read!) last spring, and I was not disappointed. I read it in two days and loved every minute of it. Not only is it suspenseful, but it has great characters also. I don't want to say too much about what it is about because part of the fun is finding out the pilot's secret along with his wife. All I will say is that you won't be disappointed!

Summary: YAWN!!!
Review: This book was boring, and predictable with plot holes big enough to drive a bus through. I admire Oprah for starting her book club. I'm glad she's inspired her audience to read. However, the books she has chosen (especially this season), seem targeted toward the non-reading public. They're mentally unchallenging yarns, written at the reading level of a high schooler. I think she underestimates the American reading public.

Summary: One of the Best Books I've Read This Year
Review: The Pilot's wife was engrossing. I very nearly did not buy this book but am certainly glad I did. Everything else stopped for me while reading this book. Not only is it one of the best Oprah book selections I've read but it is on my list of top reads so far this year. The only concern I had was how Mattie was going to react if she ever found out that she has two half-siblings. I wish Kathryn had the courage to tell Mattie the truth.
