Rating: Summary: I enjoyed reading this book. Review: I read at least a book a week and I have never read anything by this author. I am looking forward to finding her previous books and check them out.
Rating: Summary: Watch out for the movie Review: This was the most incredibly shallow book that I have read in some time. Not only did it read with all the poetry that a screenplay provides, but it was not even an interesting screenplay, being both predictable and wide of the mark in terms of the reactions and relations between characters. It is always a shame when an author pitches their work so obviously to Hollywood- and Hollywood doesn't make very many interesting movies.
Rating: Summary: This is an overwritten book. Review: "The Pilot's Wife" is a slow-moving, overly introspective story about a bereaved woman who learns that her late husband was not the person whom he pretended to be. The writing is plodding, pretentious and maudlin. In addition, the book is very depressing. In short, "The Pilot's Wife" is a disappointing novel.
Rating: Summary: Quick read---enjoyable if a tad predictable Review: A woman answers the door in the middle of the night to find that her husband, a commercial pilot, has been killed in an explosion over the Atlantic. Shocked by the allegation that it may have been suicide, she and an airline union investigator set out to find the truth. What she discovers along the way makes her question what she thought about her marriage. This is a quick read--I read it in a few hours. You do see the ending coming well before you get there, but it doesn't really detract from the rest of the story. The main problem is that the story just kind of stops; there's no real conclusion. Having never read the author's other works I don't know if this is routine for her or not. My suggestion is to pick this up when you want a good story that you can read in a short time.
Rating: Summary: Thought provoking and a cause for uneasiness! Review: The Pilots Wife grabs the reader instantly. Kathryn Lyons, the main character thinks and feels exactly like all women who live with a fear of losing. This fear is within all women today, yesterday and forever. The reader feels Kathryn's fear, not only of loss but of what this loss means and is there more meaning than she can comprehend at the onset of the tragedy. It is one of the best books I have ever read, and I read everything.
Rating: Summary: Interesting Insight Review: I watched Oprah's small "play" based on part of the book & was intrigued. Even though I knew what was going to happen, I read the book anyway. I enjoyed watching how the story evolved and how the characters handled the situation. I was a bit disappointed in what caused the crash, thinking it was a bit far-fetched. Not that it couldn't happen, but the author seemed to lead you in one direction, finding that you should've gone the other way. I was a bit confused by the cursory ending & would've liked a bit more detail. Overall, it is a book I would recommend. Relatively light reading and an interesting plot. An unusal Oprah pick, I think because of it's straightforward writing. None of the long descriptions and details from the usual picks.
Rating: Summary: Read Shreve's other books Review: The Weight of Water and Resistance were both dazzling books. It's too bad Oprah chose this lesser effort by this accomplished author. Not a bad book, but her others were more original and interesting.
Rating: Summary: The ending left you feeling confused Review: This book is not up to Oprah's usual good books. I am still confused with the ending. It certainly did not make me question my husband.
Rating: Summary: Figured it out by just reading 30 pages - waste of time and Review: Too easy to figure out and should've been a short story. I respect Oprah's choices but this has been disappointing.
Rating: Summary: Somewhat confusing Review: Following the thoughts of a breaved widow, the book wanders thru her memories of her late husband. She finds that in the end she did not know him AT ALL. I don't think that the character was real...She was SO FAR off
