Rating: Summary: Great read and poignant subject presentation Review: ...I can't tell you why I selected this book, but once I picked it up I couldn't put it down - even though I read about six books at a time I dropped the others to finish it. Join Kathryn Lyons on her journey of discovery and healing. The story begins with an ominous knock on the door in the wee hours of the morning. The reader learns of the plane crash and subsequent loss of the pilot Jack Lyons, and then gets involved in the drama surrounding the circumstances of the loss. As things unfold they get ugly, but Kathryn resolves them in a way that works for her. I don't always care for the Oprah selections as some are very dark, but this one was a find. But don't take my opinion, read it for yourself!

Rating: Summary: An Emotional Read! Review: I thought this book was terrific! Yes, it's theme was melancholy and heartwrenching, nevertheless, it was impossible to put down. I really felt for the main character and was drawn to her throughout the entire book. I really like the author's unique writing style. It was one of the best books I have read in a long time. I definatly recommend it to anyone who is willing to read it!
Rating: Summary: The Pilot's Wife Review: Although it is fiction, this is one of those stories which is so believable that it continues to stay with you. You don't want it to end. Just the right amount of mystery interwoven with a warm, delightful story. At the end, you wish that Shreve would do a sequel to this one!
Rating: Summary: I can't believe how horrible this book is... Review: I was hoping "The Pilot's Wife" would be an enjoyable read and not one I couldn't wait to finish. Anita Shreve's writing is so predictable and boring that you can't wait to actually put the book down. I know this review isn't exactly great, but there isn't much to say about such a poorly written and boring novel.
Rating: Summary: Nothing is ever as it seems in this intruing novel of Review: sudden and extreme loss. Kathryn's hope that the day would never come when the knock on her door would mean the death of her aviator husband, is shattered on the very first page of this excellent, compelling novel. It is a love story, a mystery, a revelation in human relationships and a riveting expose of what can and often does happen in the lives of seemingly ordinary and normal people. As the story unfolds in a fast-paced manner, geared to keep your heart racing and your fingers turning the pages; it becomes clear that Kathryn never really knew her husband. Much of his life was kept from her and little by little she pieces together what happened not only on that last flight but in the last fourteen years of her marriage, and just how that knowledge will impact her life and the life of her daughter Mattie who adored her father. She desperately tries to keep their world from crumbling altogether. How Kathryn accomplishes this feat and deals with the unbelievable revelations of who her husband really was, makes for a wonderful read. The author is skillful in creating an environment of suspense, romance and intrigue and I recommend this novel to those readers who enjoy a carefully crafted mystery that will evoke diverse emotions and leave them feeling pleased and satisfied with the decision to read it.
Rating: Summary: a good read Review: I want to give this book 4 stars but I am having mixed feelings. First, and I have read a few of the authors books, the manner in which she gives dialogue, such as He thinks and says is atrocious. The other book I read was Fortunes Rock, which, well I don't have anything nice to say so i will just keep my mouth shut. I have heard a lot of good about this author so I want to read her stuff. Yet, a lot is flat. Just the way she has her characters interacting is enough to distract a read. Needs more doing, and not showing. But I managed to look past this. The book did keep me interested, as this woman's life seemed lost, suddenly, then stolen. At any point she, Kathryn could have just snapped and we would not have thought anything of it. We may have hopped for it. The interweaving of the past and present took a few chapters before I really began to see what it was worth. The author created chapters that were not flash backs, but a thought process. We see Kathryn second guessing what she saw in her life. Did she see the signs her husband had a second life? Did she have clues? Did she have reasons to ever think about it? These are all legitimate question that a person would not only think about but see in their head. The author was on the money with those. However, I think she may have gone one chapter too far, though. She reflects to the day her husband left and she say him hiding a shirt. That would have been the better point to end her reflecting. It brought the reader up to speed. The author, though, went back to prior time once more time after bringing us up to seep. It can confuse the read on where and when the climax of the story is. One last note. The stuff about the IRA was a stretch. She didn't make it work, with the exception of showing a dual life of her hubby.
Rating: Summary: predictable...but great! Review: The Pilot's Wife was a very dramatic novel about a woman searching to find her late husband's true identity. It makes me ask yourself: How well do I know my friends and family? This is a great book that makes you keep reading once you start. A genuine page-turner. Although it was predictable during the middle section, it is still exciting to find out the true answer at the end. I was disappointed at the end, but who knows? You can make up what happens afterwards with your imagination!
Rating: Summary: Give me a break. Review: I was given this book as a Christmas gift from a woman who does watch Oprah. (I don't.) I was skeptical, but I love to read and don't mind taking recommendations. What a waste of a couple of hours this book was. The writing was flat, the characters were practically devoid of any realistic emotion, and the plot was so predictable I was just waiting for the "revelation" to come through so I could get it over with to see how Shreve dealt with it. I found the writing to be subpar and lifeless. I didn't care about this book, the characters or the author. That'll teach me to read ANYthing Oprah recommends.
Rating: Summary: The Pilot's Wife Review: This was an extremely good book. After "Weight of Water" which I didn't particularly like, but enjoyed the way it was written, I decided to try another Shreve novel. This one was very captivating. It is well written. Yes, it is somewhat predictable, but unfolds in a way that makes you "feel" the story.
