Rating: Summary: Gripping, hard to put down. Well written and very enjoyable Review: The book captivates your attention within the first chapeter. The indepts writing style of the author allows you to know the characters, become involved with the plot and stick with it until the end. The writers discriptions allow you to see the events, be a part of them and not loose any connection with the story.
Rating: Summary: Captivating and depressing; hard to resolve both feelings. Review: I felt short-changed in reading the Pilot's Wife because I was drawn in (Shreve is an excellent writer), expecting to make sense of the trajedy and aftermath of it (one painful situation after another without a let up), and wasn't able to. I really wanted to understand how the pilot could lead a double life - and why he chose the direction he did. Didn't he have other options for his pain? Why didn't he make use of them? I felt the writer wanted us to experience the Pilot's secretiveness and pain it caused his family- by leaving this info out! I didn't find this book light, casual or predictable as some others have written - rather intense, depressing, and disappointing... Next time I want to read one of her books, I think I'll find out first if anyone dies, gets sick, etc. so I can decide whether to read it or not.
Rating: Summary: you know what's going to happen but you can'y beleive it!!!! Review: I enjoyed this book a lot and even found my self reading it in the car. It's a great beach read book and page turning.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful couldn't stop reading. Review: I thought that it was wonderful. It seemed very real to me. Any woman in her position couldn't have handled it differently. She should be proud of the way she handled her postion.
Rating: Summary: Depressing from a woman's viewpoint Review: Oprah supposedly said that if you read this book, you'll never trust men again. She's right! But I found this book compelling reading; I finished it in one day. However I was disappointed in the viewpoint that women are always victimized by men and by the stereotyping of airline pilots. The book just left a bad taste in my mouth.
Rating: Summary: What happened? I usually love Oprah's picks... Review: but this book is not worthy of being placed on the same list as "A Lesson Before Dying" or "Paradise," among others. That is not to say this book is without its merits- the story becomes more engaging as it progresses- but the story is more suited for a movie of the week than a work of literature.
Rating: Summary: WASTE OF TIME Review: I read this book and there is only one word for it completly predictable. The story lacks any story. I am glad that i borrowed a friends copy cos if i had of bought it i would have burnt it in the fire!!!! DON'T BUY THIS BOOK.
Rating: Summary: Surprised by the Negative Reviews Review: I did not read the customers' reviews before I bought this book and I am so glad I didn't! I am so pleased not to have been tainted by the surprising number of negative responses.(The same reason why sometimes I see movies on opening night.) On reflection, I can identify with some of their critiques. However, I found this book a wonderful read. I didn't find it predictable. Far from it. I was intensely involved in the plot and thought of the book at every moment during my day, wanting to be home and reading more. I thoroughly enjoyed the characters and felt I could easily identify with most all of them save Jack. Kathryn's responses were not weak, but an example of the stunned suspended state death can force us in. The young Mattie is not an example of a spoiled brat; rather, she represents the awkward, challenging time some of us all went through as teens. Loving our parents, hating the authority, wisdom and knowledge they sometimes push onto us, changes in our bodies, the pressures of school, society, etc, all can be overwhelming and produce anger and frustration. But I digress. The short of it is, I recommend this book highly. Maybe it is light. But does that have to be bad?
Rating: Summary: I kept reading hoping the book would get better. Review: The book was boring and predictable. So many of the relationships could have offered so much more to the story. It was a complete let down.
Rating: Summary: Three words: Predictable, predictable, predictable Review: I was disappointed as all the other Oprah books I'd read were excellent. No surprises here. Did I say predictable? That said, The Pilot's Wife IS a quick-read, and entertaining (in the mindless, 'People' magazine sort of way). As others have said, good reading for the beach or the pool. If you want to read it, borrow it from the Library!
