Rating: Summary: like every other Oprah book - highly overrated Review: I don't know who picks them for Oprah but this is my last. I have read two others and been dissappointed. From now on if it says "Oprah book club", I know that it will not be a book I select.
Rating: Summary: It was enjoyable to read, but did not affect me personally. Review: This was the first book we chose to read in our newly formed book club. I do not regularly read novels, so I was glad that the book turned out to be easy and enjoyable to read. The colorful, detailed descriptions made the book flow smoothly as I turned each page. I did not want to put it down. The story was interesting to read about, although I was not personally affected by this book. It was somewhat predictable with some surprise towards the end. I would've liked story more if it was less predictable. I look forward to our club's first meeting next month to discuss this well-written story.
Rating: Summary: I enjoyed it, even though I knew how it would end Review: I read this book in one day, which is unusual for me. I really don't know why - I did not develop a great deal of empathy for any of the characters and I had a pretty good idea by the middle of the book how it was all going to turn out (short of a few details, I was right). I guess that is why I kept reading, to see whether or not I had it all figured out!Anyway, not a bad book, not a great book, but a fairly pleasant, easy read. Certainly not as depressing as some of the Oprah picks.
Rating: Summary: A good story , told in vivid detail. Review: Perhaps this is a book more suited for women readers. It kept me interested and engaged from first page to last.
Rating: Summary: Page turner Review: I thought this was a terrific book. I had a lot of trouble putting it down even for a few moments. I think Shreve did an excellent job portraying how the characters dealt with an unexpected loss of a loved one. The main character's search for the truth about her husband was fascinating I only wish she had written more! I have no idea why readers have written any bad reviews. Obviously some of these people have no idea what it feels like to lose someone close to you. I felt really connected to the characters and hated to see the story end.
Rating: Summary: Vivid Emotionality Review: Pilot's Wife was my first exposure to the writing of Anita Shreve. It's not the plot so much that captured by attention, but the emotional travels taken by the main character. Accurate. Compelling. A sound depiction of what is experienced by the human heart and mind.
Rating: Summary: Good book, enjoyable reading. Review: Interesting, though somewhat boring towards middle of book. Surprising ending.
Rating: Summary: This is #1? Review: An insipid story where the action moves quicly without much reasoning behind the movement. The characters were not developed in a fashion where they were known to the reader except on a superficial level. Fortunately, it was a very quick read, thus not much time was wasted. It's popularity shows how hype can sell. I feel I wasted my money.
Rating: Summary: I loved it at first and then became disinterested Review: When I first started this book I was hooked, it was a total page-turner. I loved the first half of the book and couldn't wait to read it. Toward the second half of the book I became bored and lost compassion for the situation. It became "contrived" and too dramatic for me.
Rating: Summary: 50 ways to write about grief Review: How many ways can you write about grief? This book goes on and on, describing in a multitude of ways how poor pitiful Katherine grieves. Give me a break! The first 3/4 of the book is about how she grieves all the time. The last part is too unbelieveable. I am sorry I wasted my time on this book.
