Rating: Summary: A No Brainer Review: The reviews in the front of the book are correct when they say it is a quick read, and it is somewhat absorbing, but it is also one-dimensional and fanciful. This is not a literary book that will make the reader think, or question any reality they might have. It will not make you laugh or cry or stir deep-seated emotions. It is a book for the beach, or a rainy Saturday when you want to give your mind a break. You will not need it for this one.
Rating: Summary: Entertaining Review: A friend recommended the book. I really enjoyed it over the Christmas holidays... was not prepared for all the twists and turns and kept me very interested. Highly recommend! Averlyn genesisartline.com
Rating: Summary: Do you really know the person you married? Review: Granted Jack could have easily lived two separate lives as a pilot. He was traveling to the various continents, leaving for days and sometimes weeks at a time. For 16 years, as a trusting wife, I probably would have not been suspicious just as Kathryn Lyons was not, especially if they had what she believed a good marriage. In my opinion, Jack was a typical husband and father; after all he adored Mattie and said he loved Kathryn. His subtle changes were not drastic or atypical or alarming. What wife periodically hasn't gone through their husband being insensitive and taking her for granted. However; I will admit after reading this book I am looking at my husband with both my eyes wide-opened and not taking too much for granted. I would never ever want to think of my husband living a total separate live beyond myself and the children. What wife could wrap her brain around just that thought much less what Kathryn discovered on her quest for the truth? In this case the truth did set Kathryn free but the cost is beyond belief...I did cry for Jack at the beginning of the book...my God to lose your husband in a plane accident but at the end I cried for Kathryn and felt her pain. I didn't hate Jack and rather felt sorry for him. I sincerely believed in my heart he could have been honest with Kathryn and with himself. As much as Mattie loved him, she in time, would have forgave him, just as Kathryn would have forgave him. I read the book in a day after church and I pray that Anita Shreve has a sequel to this book to bring closure for all of us, who really was there with Kathryn and shared her pain when she lost Jack and then when she discovered him...
Rating: Summary: How well do we know those who are closest to us? Review: That's the question The Pilot's Wife asks. When Kathryn Lyon's husband dies in a plane crash she must cope with a staggering loss, but as the story unfolds she must also cope with the growing knowledge that her husband might not have been the man she thought he was. A story of struggle and triumph, Anita Shreve has penned a page-turning story that will stay with you long after the covers are closed.
Rating: Summary: 3 Star Book Review: Well, I thought this book was going to be too sad, so that is why I didn't buy it in the first place...but since it was not only lent to me but was told there was a strange ending...I couldn't resist! Anyhow, I finished the book and it was not this sad story book I had pictured...at one point, this book was soooooooo JUICY, I could not put the thing down...then it ends...the book that is....along with the story...it leaves you to imagine what will happen....it doesn't come out it say it how things are... ANYHOW, I Love the way the book bounces from present to past...It's a quick read...I give it three stars. Both mother and daughter are left alone after a horrible plane crash to not only pick up the pieces, but also end up with the mother searching for truth...who was her husband? How well did she know him? Get the book! I don't want to give it all away. I was actually mad when it ended because I wanted more...not to be left hanging....hmmmmmmm, well this writer has some other books out...maybe I'll buy one in a few months and let you know how those ones end up...
Rating: Summary: A step-above the mass market read Review: This book is the best of both worlds -- it's easy-to-read without being shallow, and carries the nuance of literature without any of the ponderous prose or depressing themes. You can read it in the doctor's office and be entertained, but not embarrased as others scope out your taste in books. In truth, it's not destined to be a classic, but who really cares? The story is simply told and has an element of "Lifetime" television in the theme of an innocent woman wronged; the story might have had more depth if she were a little less of a paragon. But in the end, I just gave over to it and enjoyed myself.
Rating: Summary: Simply didn't fly for me Review: Although this book has received excellent reviews, I thought it was stilted and predictable. A quick read; "no brainer;" good for the beach type book.
Rating: Summary: A fantastic book!!! Review: I loved this book. It is thought provoking, sad, and intoxicating. I have read it three or four times. I don't know why I was so moved by this book. The story is interesting and well written. I fell in love with Katheryn, and even her scoundrel husband. The daughter was realistically portrayed, a bratty teenager. I am obviously NOT a writer. I just wanted to convey what a stirring, haunting tale it is. Read this book! You don't want to miss this book.
Rating: Summary: a good read Review: I really enjoyed this book. It was a simple, quick read, but engrossing. I enjoyed her relationship with Robert (whom I was picturing as Russell Crowe). Too bad they already made the movie without him. Read it. It's good.
Rating: Summary: God Help Us Review: I read the reviews for this book after I read it and I knew absolutely what I was going to see: praise for a Times bestseller. I give this book two stars instead of proverbial one for a few reasons. Primarily, I believe the Anita Shreve has the power to be a great writer, but instead of writing well, she writes horrible books such as The Pilot's Wife to appease the average pleasure reader and make millions of dollars. Secondly, this book isn't absolutely horrible, but it is near there. Finally, she made an effort. Two hundred ninety three pages is a lot of work, be it good or bad. Brief synopsis: a woman finds out that her supposedly normal husband who works as an airline pilot on overseas routes has a life that she is oblivious to and regrets not knowing about. I read this book in a few hours on a rainy day. My day became even worse after I finished it. The nostalgic thoughts are placed horribly and are not justified anywhere. She simply puts something dramatic at the end of each to compensate for the lack of good writing. The story ends up taking an unforeseeable twist (which isn't necessarily bad), but this twist is so outrageous that it actually made me laugh. She then pulls out another surprise and makes the average reader delve even further. The ending is blase, much like the rest of the book. I would reccommend you borrow it first (mass-marketing, the wave of the future), and if by some act of god you end up enjoying this book, by all means get a copy of your own. Support this style of writing, I dare you.
