Summary: Trite, Exasperating, Awful
Review: The only reason I finished this book is because I have rule -- finish what you start. Otherwise, I would have thrown it away. This book is just plain awful. From the stereoptypical characters to the highly contrived plot to the bafflingly bad ending - this book just continued to disappoint. Does Oprah even READ the books she selects anymore? I'd be embarassed to have this on my book selection list.

Summary: My Review
Review: I found this book to very slow and uninteresting! I have read my of Opera's Book Club Books that I really enjoyed, but I do not recommend this one. I never made it past page 100 of this novel, so please don't waste your money and time!

Summary: What hype
Review: Give us a break. A good writer turned to pulp fiction. With glaring errors that leave one stunned and cheated.

Rating: 3 stars
Summary: NOT REALISTIC, BUT A GOOD READ
Review: Having two spouses on diffferent continents is not something I ever thought about...but found plausible and the interesting part of the book. The rest of it was quite unbelievable...but a good read.

Summary: Dissapointing low-brow novel
Review: One of the reasons I read this book was because I saw the author had taught at Amherst college in western Mass. If this is the quality of writing skills they teach at that school then my previously high regard for the school has gone down.

This is at best a trashy holiday-read. Shallow characters (characters get introduced but never developed), stereotypes (dashing tall airline pilots) and plot elements borrowed from every direction thrown into a blender.

The underlying premise of the book was good (do you every really know somebody), but Ms Shreve needs to go on a creative-writing course to learn how to turn that into a well-written novel.

Summary: Some realism please!
Review: An ordinary all American pilot gun-running for the IRA? Frankly I was disgusted that such a serious political situation which has caused so much heartache for so many has been trivialised in such a way.Up until that point I had found the book to be an engrossing read but I certainly will not be picking up an Anita Shreve novel again.

Summary: The Pilot's Wife
Review: FIRST NOVEL I'VE READ FRONT TO BACK IN 36 YEARS! Most novels take me months to read; I started reading "The Pilot's Wife" after breakfast and finished it before dinner-- I felt as if I was there with Kathryn when she opened her door; and I wasn't going to leave her side until "we" found out about Jack!

Summary: throw-it-across-the-room bad
Review: I ended up returning this book, because I couldn't even bear to have it on my shelf (and I own a *lot* of books). It's not just the trite writing or the uninteresting characters, but the blithe use of stereotypes as purportedly major plot points. The sweet young Irish flight attendant is not only almost immediately pregnant but of course both she and her brother are up to their necks in the IRA. I am very disappointed in Oprah for pushing this dreck.

Summary: An extraordinary book
Review: I really enjoyed reading the story of Jack and Kathryn. The characters were described so beautifully I felt as if I knew them. The reading is very easy, I love the way she describes what people look like and how they are feeling. I strongly recommend this book and I look forward to reading more of Anita Shreve.

Summary: Another Actual Pilot's Wife
Review: I have been on a waiting list at the library to get this book for weeks, but it was definitely worth it. I read it in just under three hours, totally unable to put it down. I even took it to work with me, squeezing in several chapters there. Anita Shreve has somehow crawled into my mind, capturing the essence of that "person being left" feeling, the sensation that your family lives its life in segments, going into a holding pattern while Daddy's gone. How could she know all these things? This story goes beyond entertainment.... It is like a virtual reality experience, and hung onto me for days afterward. In fact, it still has a firm hold. People who can't believe Kathryn could be so blind to who her husband really is have never loved a man who comes and goes with the erratic frequency of a pilot. There before the grace of God go I.......
