Rating: Summary: It's a Page Turner. Review: What a great suspense. I finished the book almost immediately after I started it. It made me want to become part of Oprah's book club! (When it came to the Climax though, I was actually a little disappointed because you just know what's going on and you're built up to think it's more) but IT'S STILL A GREAT BOOK. Everytime the author would flashback to the past, I was like "no no go back to the present, I need to know what happens!"
Rating: Summary: Pilot's Wife Review: Not an upbeat novel, but still interesting. Makes you think "can you ever really say you know someone?"
Rating: Summary: engrossing, but a little hard to swallow Review: This book is a quick read because the plot is very gripping. However, the protagonist Kathryn makes discoveries about her late husband Jack that are very hard to believe, so there is a strain on the reader's credulity in a tale that otherwise tries very hard to be authentic -- for example, Ms. Shreve examines the nature of grief with excellent insight, pointing out that it is often harder for children and teenagers than it is for adults to accept the death of a loved one. I found insights like these to be thought provoking and true. But Kathryn's obliviousness to her husband's activities while he was alive, and the magnitude and extent of her husband's activities, induce skepticism in the reader even though the rest of the book is so strong and believable.
Rating: Summary: Disappointing and Predictable Review: I love to read and when I finished this book, I felt as though I had wasted my time. This was the same old story told in the same old way. How many ways can you tell this story before it gets monotonous?
Rating: Summary: Surprise! Review: When I started reading this book I did not enjoy Anita Shreve's writing style and thought it would be a tear-jerker about a woman dealing with death. So I flipped to the middle and read just one more paragraph (I thought) before returning it to its owner. But then I got all caught up in the fabulous story and intriguing plot & characters. I returned to the front of the book and read it all the way through in one night. A fun read that caught me up!
Rating: Summary: I'M SO GLAD THIS BOOK CAME IN FOR A LANDING! Review: I thought this was an excellent book that showed how closure was achieved in the face of a loss by death. The protagonist not only lost her spouse of 16 years, but she also lost the person she believed he was. Only in death was she able to recognize the true face of the man she was married to. She is a delightful, strong and very convincing woman who is easy to like and empathize with. Like a mighty falcon, she soars above the losses she has suffered and one watches her flight into victory.
Rating: Summary: Flying in and out of life Review: I will never forget this book. The day after I read it, Alaska Airlines crashed practically outside my window in the Pacific Ocean off the Channel Islands taking the lives of all passengers and flight crew. The county was in shock from the disaster. As the days went by, the newspapers began to profile the victims, their lives and their families. It was heartbreaking to see the family members trying to cope with the sudden loss of their loved ones. We couldn't help but wonder how they got through such an event, it was all so horrific. While I was touched by this book, it was obvious that the impact of the crash would force me to take a more dramatic view of the story. I couldn't help but wonder how the survivors were coping with such a shattering experience. Hopefully, none of survivors were having to discover that their loved ones were living a double life like the wife, Kathryn in the book finds out about her husband who was also the pilot of the plane. As Kathryn moves through the grieving process, events unfold to lay open the guarded secret her husband kept hidden from her all those years. Kathryn finds herself reevaluating everything about their life together. She reviews events, memories and feelings, trying to discover the signs and symptoms of the beginning of betrayal and the end of trust.
Rating: Summary: Good Reading Review: Great book once I got it going. Then I couldn't put it down. It was a little predictable but the last 1/3 of the book was fantastic.
Rating: Summary: Good book - a very quick read Review: I think that this book started out rather slow. Right off the bat, Kathryn Lyons got the knock on her door which would change her world forever, so I thought it would be a fast-paced book. All of the emotions attached to the life that she had with Jack was presented as a series of flashbacks throughout the book. But for the first-1/3 of the book, Kathryn is down and depressed and moping around, spending time with her grandmother Julia who raised her and her daughter Mattie, and it just seemed to drag on and on. I guess the author was trying to capture the sense of loss, but it took too long in my opinion. Once Kathryn's mind starts to make connections here and there the pace of the book picks up. But then it seems rushy at the end. In a short amount of time Kathryn learns a TON of information that isn't explained very well and is sort of confusing. All in all, it WAS a good story. I read in less than a week in little spurts here and there. But I think that it started too slow and ended too quick. It left me wanting to know what else happened.
Rating: Summary: The Pilot's Wife Review: While this was a really good, and fast, read, I thought the ending was a little weak. Everything was tied up in neat little bows and that isn't realistic. The husband's contradictions were too far apart in places to be believable. Also, the wife appeared to be devoid of any responsbility for the situation she and her husband wound up in.
