Summary: So-so
Review: This book was entertaining enough for me to read and not loose focus on it, but I was disappointed. I haven't read all Oprah's books, but the couple I have read (the Wally Lamb books, Rapture of Canaan, etc) were awesome. The story line is interesting... it just seemed like sometimes the main characters didn't stay consistant through the novel. I bought this book, but I really don't know if I'll want to read it again. Once was definately enough for me.

So, read it if you want... It's not necessarily a bad book... just isn't ever going to appear in my top ten. :)

Summary: The Pilot's Wife: A Novel
Review: I could not put this book down! Although I figured out what might happen, I was somewhat suprised at the twist regarding the other woman's political involvement and how Robert got involved with her and the danger so whole heartedly. I felt sad and mad at how much of himself he did not share with Katheryn, she deserved more. This was a good book, it made me think about relationships in my own life.

Summary: Extremely Well Written
Review: A depressing story of how a wife handles tragedy. Never have I read a book so fast in my life, Anita Shreve is a terrific writer. Even though the story is predictable it is beautifully presented and makes the reader wonder whether you really know the people that you think you do. Quite thought provoking and interesting. A good read. I enjoyed it.

Summary: Reluctant Approval
Review: I really struggled with this book. I'll admit to being too snobby about books which find a wide audience and I'm afriad I may have carried that baggage into reading this book. I thought Kathryn was too naive and seemed to experience life as it happened to her instead of having any power to change the circumstances into which she was thrust. However, I don't really know how a person asserts power when facing such complete loss. Even so, I found the whole notion of Jack's utter betrayal of Kathryn somewhat incredible. How could a man who deeply cares for his daughter so totally disregard the feelings of his wife?

Ultimately, the book is both entertaining and relevant but it is not very deep. Kathryn Lyons is simply a vessel for the story and no details differentiate her from any widow who finds out that her dearly departed husband was a jerk and a liar.

Summary: not realistic whatsoever
Review: I just couldn't believe the things that occurred in this novel....they were too **outrageous**(?) The prose on pain and emotional suffering was well written, but still a slow book. If your time is precious, this is not a book to leave you feeling satisfied.

Summary: LOVED THIS BOOK!
Review: This book was recommended to me by a coworker. We were talking about a book I had just finished and she thought I would like The Pilots Wife. I opened this book one evening, and when I put it down three days later, I had reached to back cover.

Just when you think Kathryn Lyons life can't worse, it does. It makes you wonder how well you really know your loved ones, and if they past away suddenly, what you learn about them that would suprise you? This book comes with a reality that probably faces many people everyday.

I think it is wonderfully written. I have never read a book so fast in my life.

Summary: Insight
Review: Anita Shreve is wonderful in A Pilot's Wife. It is a story with an inevitable conclusion (a bit predictable) but so emotionally in depth that the plot seems to take a second seat to the overwhelming emotions felt by the characters of the play.

Following the death of her husband in a plane crash over Ireland, Kathryn finds herself suffering through grief and betrayl, mourning over the death of her husband of 16 years, a husband, she discovers, she knows virtually nothing about.

What makes this such a wonderful read, as with most stories, is that it makes you question your own life. How well do you really know the people you share your life with? Is it possible to trust someone? Can you love two people at the same time? All of these things roll through your mind upon the novel's conclusion, and your outlook on life and love will be inevitably changed.

Summary: A Good Read while Flying!
Review: While at an airport shop in Chicago O'Hare, I found this title and thought what a fun book to read while flying. Finding it disturbing to start the book during takeoff, I whipped it open while airborne. Then I could not put it down for anything. This book delves into the intricacy of familial relationships and how tightly these relationships are woven - and how fragile they really are and easy to unravel. As a divorcing woman, I could relate to the plight Kathryn felt as a new widow; indeed I feel that my divorce is a kind of death. Watch out for intense emotional reactions!

This book is beautifully written in a style both terse and flowing. It is a complicated read and sometimes a bit too drawn out, but the payoffs come throughout the book and build to the end; this building of plot, I believe, is one of its strengths. I have handed it down to a friend, and so shall it go on. A wonderful read that I can highly recommend to anyone ("upstairs" or "downstairs").

Summary: DEPRESSING
Review: I found this book to be terribly depressing. The writing was good but the book went on and on about what a wife experiences when she loses her husband. I was able to feel what Kathryn was going through emotionally, but I felt half-sick the entire time I read about her grief. Perhaps her loss scared me, but I did not enjoy the depression that I shared with her while I read the book.
