Rating: Summary: a Great Read Review: Although this is subject matter that doesn't generally interest me (I hate children, teenagers, and most adults) I found myself drawn into the story almost immediately. Leavitt has a natural voice that makes the characters pop off the page. I found myself caring about their problems and hoping things would work out for them. The book is uplifting in the way it examines the issues, but never sentimental or simplistic. Leavitt really knows how to tell a story and keep the reader engaged. A-plus.
Rating: Summary: Deeply compelling and emotional Review: Caroline Leavitt is one of my favorite writers and her latest novel doesn't disappoint. In fact, it's her best book yet. The characters are vivid and memorable and I couldn't put the book down. When I was forced to stop reading, I found myself thinking about the characters; they took on a life of their own. I felt I knew them and couldn't wait to see what would happen in their lives. This is such a wonderful book that you should buy a copy for yourself and then buy as many copies as you can to share with all of your friends who appreciate beautiful language and a heart-wrenching story.
Rating: Summary: Good for Sitting by the Fire or the Beach Review: This is one of those books that is great when you just want to sit around and read. I had a "snow day" this week and spent most of the day reading GIRLS IN TROUBLE making a free day off from work even more fun than usual. Although this is perhaps not quite as sharp as Leavitt's last book, COMING BACK TO ME, it is still a good story about family and love. And even though there is no "happy ending" Leavitt shows us that life is full of surprises, twists, and turns that we must deal with in our own way. A pregnant teen-ager is an old story and has been done hundreds of times, but the open adoption puts a new slant on it and gives us something else to consider. I did find there to be a lot of unnecessary negativity throughout the story. The negativity Sara experiences upon her return to school after having the baby; the negativity and non-support from her parents; the negativity of the birth father's mother. There seemed to be so much going against Sara throughout her life and her character was overshadowed by these issues from time to time. Just as there can be too much of a Pollyanna attitude in a story, there can also be too much of just the opposite. More of a balance would have been more believable to me. I had a flashback to the writing of Jacqueline Susann while reading parts of this book, especially near the end when things seemed to move along too quickly for earlier parts of the story. After reading this, if you haven't read COMING BACK TO ME, pick it up and compare. I think you'll see the difference in styles.
Rating: Summary: a reviewer from West Redding CT Review: What a brilliant book. Caroline Leavitt tackles the hard subject of open adoption with a sharp insightful hand. This writer (and this book) deserve great praise. It is a beautifully written work and also a "I can't put it down" read. You won't be sorry if you buy it.
Rating: Summary: Caroline Leavitt does it again! Review: I'm so glad it's winter - because these cold days have been the perfect time to settle in with Caroline Leavitt's new novel. Her characters, the plot, and her mastery of the English language all came together to make for a wonderful read. I've read each one of her novels, and I think she just keeps getting better and better.
Rating: Summary: If you're looking for a page-turner... Review: you just found it. Ms. Leavitt has written another beautifully realistic tale of love and love lost. She has a rare talent to put the reader into the hearts and minds of her characters. In this story, you experience adoption from all angles - from the 16 year old birth mom, her out of touch parents, as well as the adoptive parents who have the best of intentions. I love the honesty of this book - it's not a fairy tale, but a wonderful glimpse of real life - warts and all. Be sure to have your tissue box handy!
Rating: Summary: great book! Review: I was at the book store and found it by accident. I read the entire book in one day. I was so engrossed in the book that I stayed up reading it until my eyes burned. I can't wait to have my best friend read it and so we can talk about it.
Rating: Summary: In the manner of Alice Hoffman, Review: Caroline Leavitt is generous with her readers; she gives us believable people who win our hearts while they make mistakes. I loved this book as a mother, a daughter, and a writer. It was captivating because nothing was predictable, yet she maintains hope in the darkest of times. Another winner by Ms. Leavitt!!
