Rating: Summary: Good for Firefighter's Girlfriends/Wives Review: The Rescue was the first Nicholas Sparks book I have read. I finished it in one day! My boyfriend is a professional and volunteer firefighter so I am always drawn to books involving firefighters. This book really draws you in. It is definitely a tear jerker! My only criticism would be the way he portrayed the fire dept. Not that it couldn't happen, but I have never heard of a dept. that called their members on the phone rather than having a paging system. Also, they would have worn SCBA's into any working fires instead of just holding their breath. Yes, it was a small town but it is the 21st century! Great read!
Rating: Summary: The Rescue Review: VERY slow, VERY boring, VERY predictable. It was a painstaking process getting through this book.
Rating: Summary: WONDERFUL !! Review: Mr. Sparks did it again !! I read "A Walk to Remember" (which I might add, the movie does NO JUSTICE to the novel) and "The Notebook" and enjoyed them both. I wanted to buy a book to read on a two day retreat and I could not let it down. It is a great story/.
Rating: Summary: Fantastic Book! Late Review Review: I could have sworn that I wrote a review on this book, come to find out I was wrong. This is the book that got me started reading Nicholas Sparks... it's a fantastic book with a moving story and a lot of emotion. Beautiful book.
Rating: Summary: No Danger of Sinking in this Shallow Water Review: This is the first Nicholas Sparks book that I have read. It reminds me of those romantic short stories that I read as a teen in my mother's ladies magazines, except for the fact that this shallow tale is told in 420 pages. That is 418 too many. Denise's son Kyle is not the only verbally challenged player in this arena. Denise and Taylor, as adult characters, exhibit little better use of the language or depth of character. This is our book discussion group's monthly selection, and , after reading Anna Quindlen, Wallace Stegner, Tracy Chaevalier, and Kaye Gibbons, the lack of depth--or even compound sentences--is all the more noticeable. All in all, it stretches the gamut of emotion and literary importance from A to A -.
Rating: Summary: AMAZING! Review: Well, to be honest, I had never heard of Nicholas Sparks before..that is until I saw the movie "A Walk To Remember". That movie made me want to read the novel and I must say despite the bad reviews critics are giving it, i thought it was one of the best movies I've seen in a very long time. Anyways, seeing the movie made me want to read the book. As I read, I absolutely could not put the book down. Before i knew it 2 days had passed and I was finished. I was so impressed with Sparks' work that I then went out and purchased "The Rescue". Just when i thought that "A Walk To Remember" was his best work, I am finding that "The Rescue" was an even better book. I absolutely loved it. The thing i love about Nicholas Spark's writing is the fact that he gets soo deep into detail about the characters it makes you feel like you truly know them. I must say though, that the book was slightly predictable, well ok I could of predicted the way the story ended within the first 10 chapters, but something about the book just kept me reading. I'm going to tell you a little bit about myself. I am from Seattle, Wa and I graduated in 2000. The summer after i graduated i moved to Orlando, FL and got a job in retail. I chose to put off college simply cause of the fact that i wanted to go to school back home so i am waiting until next Jan to go back to school. But i haven't read a book since High School and now I love reading again. And i owe that all to Nicholas Sparks! He has a great talent for writing and it's impossible for me to put down any of his books. I'm going to read "A Bend in the Road" next. We'll see how that one goes!
Rating: Summary: awesome Review: this book is amazing...there came a point where i felt that there was just too much emotion for me to engulf. nicholas sparks does an excellent job writing this book making me feel every moment of it. its just outstanding.
Rating: Summary: A MAJOR Warm Fuzzy Review: I wish I could have given THE RESCUE more than five stars: it deserved more. It's predictable as all get out, which doesn't bother me a bit. I know what we're having for supper tonight, but I'll still enjoy it.It's a real feel-good book. Instead of writing about self-destructive people wallowing in their own anguish, Sparks gives us people who dare to get up and do something. As a Special Ed teacher I was especially interested in the way that Kyle's speech developed. I was disappointed in one plot development that felt too much like formula as to what happens to one secondary character near the end of the story (in my other life as a movie reviewer for an internet website I often uses the term Dead Meat Number Whatever to describe a character who is only in the story to be done ill) but that's a minor flaw. As an added bonus, there's no strong cursing. Maybe I'm way out of touch, but it irritates me to spend money to hear fictional characters use language that we punish our students for using. One good/bad thing about THE RESCUE is that I want to go to Edenton, North Carolina, so bad that I looked it up in Mapquest. It's over a thousand miles away, but I fell in love with the town while I was reading the book. Really, the town is the third major character in the book and someday I'll go there.
Rating: Summary: Don't waste your time Review: This book will insult the intelligence of anyone with more than a third grade education. It has a good premise, and likeable, if shallow characters, but it is written poorly. The plot is transparent, issues are oversimplified, and the writing style is particularly insulting. The author uses parentheticals to explain what he is writing about, as if the reader weren't smart enough to be able to figure it out. I am writing this anonymously because I wouldn't want anyone to know that I actually read this drivel.
Rating: Summary: "Surprise" or "Imagery" -- hard to rate Review: I have read all of Sparks' books. I find two critical elements within THE RESCUE. The first is predictability. I found no significant plot surprises. As a reader, I liked being surprised. However, as soon as the characters of Denise, Taylor and Kyle were introduced, I knew the direction of their relationship. I suspect that my lack of surprise emerged from my knowledge of the author. Thus, for the element of "surprise," Sparks gets 1 star. The second is imagery. One can easily be critical of Sparks' plot and story line, but HE is a master of the written word. He has an extraordinary and crafty writing skill. In many ways, Sparks paints a story with words. He creates pictures in the mind. There is a vividness within his words that induces the feelings of watching a movie rather than reading a book. What a talent! Thus, for the element of "imagery," Sparks get 11 stars. If the element of surprise is important to you, you'll be disappointed with THE RESCUE. If you have passion for the elegance, grace and beauty of the written word, you love this book.
