Rating: Summary: Romance Novel From Male Point-of-View Review: It is just about unheard of for a romance novel to be written from the male perspective. Author Nicholas Sparks stepped into that void with this novel. Daring further, to go where no man has gone before, he presents the man's conflict as one that huge chunks of the population can turn to for empathy. The fire fighting hero's central conflict is with himself and his inability to commit in relationships. In addition to rescuing people literally, his tendency is to be a rescuer personality in relationships too. He steps in and rescues a woman from a bad situation, only to desert her as soon as she is fixed. He has done this repeatedly and begins to repeat this pattern of his after rescuing a single mother and her son one night after they've been in a car collision. His biggest problem when trying to break this pattern, however, is that he won't talk to anyone about it and persists in a stubborn pattern of denial. Legions of female romance readers would do well to read this novel and experience love as the other half of the population perceives it. This book is a real eye opener in a very quiet but persistent way. It seems a lot lighter while you are reading it than it really is. As the conflict builds, you understand what a universal male conflict the author tackled. He brings it to a very nice resolution.
Rating: Summary: NOT UP TO MY EXPECTATION Review: I have read all Nicholas Sparks previous books and i like them all, But this story in comparasion, not as good as the previous ones. The story's events were so predictable and i wont call this story as a romantic one at all. I should admit that i was really disappointed cause i have expected something very romantic. The only thing which kept me somehow excited, i think, was trying to figure out Tylor's background and the secret of his upnormal behaviour towards any new love in his life. Also, i like Mitch and Mellisa, both were very interesting persons and very faithfull friends.
Rating: Summary: Absolutely Wonderful Review: The book (on tape) is wonderfull. Excellent well written story, with great characters. I did not want the story to end, but the ending gives you a closure that most books don't. This is a story I could listen to again and again!
Rating: Summary: Love it!! Review: I really love Mr. Spark! I have read all of his books, and this one does not fail me at all. It kept me on the edge, Even though I knew it would be a happy ending, I wanted to know how it would get to the happy ending... I love this book, can't wait until the next book!
Rating: Summary: Sparks did it again . . . Review: Earlier this year, I read "A Walk to Remember" by Nicholas Sparks. I was mesmerized by his ability to capture the characters' emotions and feelings. I considered "A Walk to Remember" my favorite book. That is until I read "The Rescue." My breath was taken away from me. The passion and power that Sparks exerts in his writing is remarkable. I have never read a book that made me go through so many of my own emotions in such a short span of time. Nicholas Sparks will truly live to be one of the most successful authors of the 21st century and beyond.
Rating: Summary: Predictable and too sappy Review: I am not a great fan of romances, but have tried to review this book without regard to my personal tastes. I ordered it due to the very positive early reviews and, in fact, it was better than most romances I have read. However, there were also many shortcomings which I think would be apparent even to most romance lovers. The story concerns a single mother with a developmentally challenged son who are rescued in a storm by a volunteer fireman near a small town where she recently moved. She is overwhelmed and driven by her need to teach and nurture her son, he is overwhelmed and driven by the past and the need to take on the most risky tasks in various "rescues." The story is very predictable and formulaic . . . no real surprise ending, although there are some ups and downs. The narration gets bogged down in the characters' internal, repetitive musings. You want to scream "Enough!" and "Get on with it!" While the characters are somewhat multidimensional, they are too melodramatic and out of touch with their own issues -- all of which are obvious to the reader from the first few chapters. I realize that this book is very appealing to some who like this genre, and are willing to overlook these flaws. However, if you are not a major romance fan, you will probably be aggravated by this story.
Rating: Summary: Needed some rescuing Review: Books of this genre tend to move me to tears and that is how I judge whether I like it or not. While reading Message in a Bottle I couldn't read the print for the flowing tears. At the outset of The Rescue, I thought I had hit upon another winner. Sparks certainly defines his characters both physically and emotionally, and draws you in. But somehow this one was too predictable almost from the start with a very sappy ending. However, by far better than A Walk to Remember, it emphasized what patience, love, and forgiveness can accomplish and what harboring negativity can lead to by not letting the past go. I must however credit him with writing successful stories without foul language, sex and violence which is commendable in this day and age. A big extra star for that! It was an enjoyable easy read but it is time for me to return to my courtroom mysteries, detectives and adventure stories.
Rating: Summary: Corny as a bowl of mush Review: If there's a southern man as head-in-the-clouds romantic as the hero of this book I'll eat my straw hat. Most of this book is dripping with descriptions of the mind-boggling "beauty and strength" of the heroine. She's beautiful this way, and also that way, on and on and on and on. Author obviously hasn't spent any time around the southern volunteer fireman I know.
Rating: Summary: Pour on the Cheese! Review: I've read and loved all the books by Nicholas Sparks, but this one was a little disappointing. First, it took a while to get in to (the beginning dragged on). After that, it picked up, but the ending was very predictable and very cheesy. Whatever you do though, DON'T READ THE EPILOGUE! That was what really ruined it for me. The story between Denise and Taylor was pretty realistic, but there were still some gaps there. It's a quick read and fairly enjoyable, so pick it up if you have a chance.
Rating: Summary: An Improvement Upon Sappy Walk to Remember - very Realistic! Review: After absolutely loving The Notebook and enjoying Message in a Bottle (and then reading 'Walk to Remember' & thinking...ew - what happened to Nicholas' grip on reality?), I am so pleased to have read "The Rescue." After reading the last page, and flipping the book over, I thought "hmm...ironic title." I'll leave it at that! Wonderful read - you can't beat his brand of storytelling style. I just can't believe he's not from the Carolinas! Another nice job - can't wait for the next. Beautiful story.
