Rating: Summary: What a book! Review: I remember Song of Solomon being assigned to lit students in high school and college... Therefore, I had no desire to read it. Cheesy as it sounds, thank you Oprah for recommending one of the best books I've ever read! The words just flow - despite or because of the intensely rich language, I don't know which. Reading this book was like breathing it in - like tasting it!
I can't wait to read more Toni Morrison.
Rating: Summary: Who Are You? Review: Among other things, Morrison reminds us how vital it remains to know who we ARE -- not who we think we are or who we want to be or who others believe we are or ought to be, but who we really are and where we come from and quite possibly how and why we've gotten to the who and where we are now
Rating: Summary: Excellent read Review: This book can literally not be put down. I read it all day and then couldn't go to sleep until I was done- at two a.m! The ending, however, left me confused and chilled, proving further the profound effect the book has on the reader. Great, great, great! Recommended fully
Rating: Summary: Truly remarkable Review: This story relates the awakening of a young man's consciousness regarding the world around him. Apathy and self-centeredness gave him the feeling of not belonging and just fleeting through life. And through his adult experiences, he learned that life is not what you always want it to be. You can not live alone inside yourself but you have to co-exist with whatever is around you. And through learning about his past and the people surrounding him, he has discovered himself.
Ms. Morrison is such an incredible writer. You cannot just run through the book. Each word gives meaning to the rest of the experience
Rating: Summary: So good it hurts Review: Toni Morrison writes so well that I am always aware of how good the writing is. This may sound strange but as I am reading this I am also aware of the superb craftmanship of the work. This may or may not be good. The writing is excellent. The only other author that made me aware of the superb craftmanship while I am reading is John Updkike. These authors are almost too good
Rating: Summary: Very moving...typical of Morrison Review: I have read most of Toni Morrison's works and have enjoyed them immensely. Song of Solomon has been my favorite so far. I don't know how to explain it, but when I read her novels I almost have to remind myself that it is a book. My first encouter with her writing was Beloved during a historical fiction English class. Since then I have tried to read everything she has written. Somehow you can relate to her story even if the actual plot is foreign to your life. The feelings and emotions are universal
Rating: Summary: Wow! Review: Toni Morrison just has such a command for the language. She is one of the few authors I have read who has been able to successfully crawl behind the eyes of someone from the opposite sex and tell a story. Cheers, Ms. Morrison! Y'all try Beloved by Toni Morrison next. It's even better than this one
Rating: Summary: Song of Solomon - Milkman learns to fly Review: Song of Solomon is a complex and thought-provoking story of thelife of a young black man who is floating through his life, neverfitting in, never having passion. As the author has said, it is about a young man who learns to fly. Ms. Morrison uses her words intricately, to weave a story which in the beginning may cause the reader to feel disgust with the characters. As the story unfolds, one begins to understand how complex and remarkably intelligent they truly are. There are subtle meanings and mysterious imagery woven into the story. This book can provoke much discussion when read in a group or adult classroom setting.
Rating: Summary: A true depiction of the black experience Review: The book was very compelling. Ms. Morrison's prose gave the reader insight into a family's plight in the South
Rating: Summary: A great read! Review: The detail and emotion and symbolism were so eloquent. The longing of each character to have something to hold onto, whether it be land, an identity, money, or love was woven in so carefully. Thank you, Ms. Morrison
