Summary: Morrison's Passionate Rapture of the Dead(s)
Review: When Oprah Whinfrey gave _Song of Solomon_ her highest accolades, it well deserved it. Long overlooked by many, it is a sweeping saga of a black family (the Deads) trying to adapt to culture, escape from their roots (and of some Deads who still barter in whiskey and witchcraft) and try to get along. The protagonist is called "Milkman", and his troubles, triumphs, and tribulations make up what I consider to be Morrison's finest book. A fascinating, supernatural, Southern Gothic sprawl that actually lives up to the hype.

Summary: Astonishing
Review: Another astonishing example of the level to which American writers have fallen. Praise for this author is a mystey. The Nobel, a politically correct abomination that defies expression.

Summary: SONG OF SOLOMON one of the best books I've ever read.
Review: Considering I have read over 3000 books in my life time, Song Of Solomon still sticks out as one of the best. I read it long before it was recommended on OPHRA. A lot of folks starting reading it after it was proclaimed by Ophra. Smiling at them on bus stops, laughing secretly as I walked by a co-worker reading It, I had known for years what they were now experiencing, many of life secrets are revealed, one's spirit opens up when one dares to, not only read it , but allow it to overwhelm you if only for a moment or two. Who possessed her to write such a awe inspring novel?

Summary: A book in question
Review: Hello, my name is Matthew Boyd. I'm sorry, but this isn't really a review, though it is relevent to "Song of Solomon." My high school advanced placement recently read this book. I enjoyed it, but apparently someone else didn't. Since we read it, the book has been effectively banned from being taught in English classes in my county. A parent complained that the we as teenagers were not mature enought to handle the "mature themes." Specifically, she complained about the incest, promiscuous sex, and foul language found in the book. To me, this is not seeing the forest for the trees. What really bothers me, though, is that a woman has been writing letters to the local newspaper, saying that "Song of Solomon" has minimal literary value, and is not worthy of being taught in public school.

I noticed, when I was reading the reviews of this book, that many people are very enthusiastic about this book. I'd be interested in hearing what you thought of the book, and your opinion of its value. My e-mail address is kboyd@eagle1.eaglenet.com

Summary: My favorite book ever!
Review: I am a senior in high school and I know that this is the most amazing book that I have ever read... it made me actually look forward to going to English class. Teachers, please give this book to your students. It is insightful, eloquent, and wonderful.

Summary: Storytelling at its best.
Review: When I idly picked the book up off my wife's nightstand it never occurred to me I might like it. What I'd heard about the book screamed, "not your type!" In fact, I only picked it up out of morbid curiosity about what people totally unlike me were reading these days. Within a page I had fallen in love with the characters and was intrigued by the plot.

I defy anyone, no matter what their favorite genre of book, to not love this story. Its like printed candy.

If I ever become very rich, I would like to fly the author to my home, sit her on my front porch with a cup of coffee, and say to her, "Now tell me a story -- any story -- and I'll just sit here with my eyes closed and listen."

Summary: A feast for the soul
Review: Pack your lunch and get ready for the journey. There will be discovery. There will be pain. Just like life. I like this book better than Beloved.

Summary: The most introspective book ever written about human life.
Review: The Song of Solomon is one of the few books I have ever read that made me think so deeply about not only my own life but about the life of those around me. I could relate every character and experience in this book to one in my own life or the life of someone close to me. It painted a very distinct portrait of the African-American experience in America and the life struggle that so many of us face within our own communities and families. The Song of Solomon left me with so much to think about, long after I finished it. It is a timeless classic that will be savored and cherished for centuries to come.

Summary: A beautiful Song
Review: Song of Solomon is a brilliant piece of work written by a masterful raconteur. The symbolic devices used were vivid. The initiation elements and the conflicts between materialism and idealism follow the tradition of Morrison's oeuvre and it doesn't get any better. Every sentence is written with great passion. The ending was especially powerful and cathartic. A must-read for Morrison fans and a great introduction for beginners

Summary: Morrison's best book to date; Wise, lyric, unpredictable.
Review: In Song of Solomon, Toni Morrison combines all of her rarified talents. Through her art of story-telling, she weaves her knowledge of folklore, a sense of poetry, and an understanding of human nature into the unified tale of an American family. The "song" of Solomon is also the history of a people, and the characters struggle to both escape and rediscover their African American heritage. With words as beautiful as music, she presents sorrow, mystery, love, madness, and the struggle for freedom as inescapable elements of life. Though filled with tragedy, this book is gracefully uplifting; even when her characters' are falling, she describes their fall as flight
