Rating: Summary: This book was a disappointment after all the hype. Review: I found myself asking time and time again how this book won The Nobel. The book started off slow and continued to drag on. It seemed more like a chore rather than pleasure to finish. I kept looking for something significant to happen or be revealed with each coming chapter, only to be more disappointed. The ending left me wanting to throw the book over the cliff along with the characters. I would not recommend this book at all. What was all the hype about? I did like the design on the cover.
Rating: Summary: I don't recommend it. Review: I was forced to read this book for my English AP class, and was also forced to take a quiz and a test on it. It was unnecessarily vulgar and lacked a climax and a "tying up of the loose ends." While the characters were interesting, the male protagonist, Milkman, never undergoes a transformation; he remains the self-centered, self-possessed youth he was at the beginning. And contrary to my teacher's opinion, there is no proof in the novel that he finds true love with Sweet. In addition, how can you praise Toni Morrison, when in her interview with _60 Minutes_ she proclaims her racist views while at the same time wanting to be treated with equality?
Rating: Summary: an excellent way to pass a week-end Review: I feel that Song of Solomon was written at a time when it could not be fully appreciated. Being an Aboriginal Canadian, I was enraptured with the characters of the book as their trials and issues were understandable. I found that I skimmed through the first 3/4 of the book quite quickly, and then regretted it as I saw how Morrison tied everything together so well. My advice to any reader would be to take your time with this book, and let yourself think.
Rating: Summary: Great story, great characters! Review: Toni Morrison's 'Song of Solomon' is a fabulous story. I truly enjoyed reading this novel. The characters are well depicted and I felt as though I knew them. However, the novel in my opinion lacked a climax and at times it was confusing. I do however, recommend it as it is a great read.
Rating: Summary: i don't see what all the hubbub is about Review: man, i am sorry guys, but i just didn't get that into it. i wasn't intimidated by the writing style- i wasn't impressed either. she had some good one line descriptions, but i don't think it is deserving of all the hoopla. i know i am going against the grain, but i wouldn't recommend it. it was a chore to finish.
Rating: Summary: Black people searching for things to fill their lives. Review: I thought it was a good book, and it was different from other books that I had read. This book was amazing in its plot, from start to finish and creates the same mood that Invisible Man does. This book deserves lots of credit, for the author is a superb writer.
Rating: Summary: I envy first-time readers; it's my favorite of all time! Review: I first read, fell in love with, was totally astounded by Song of Solomon when it was first published. That must be like 20 years ago? Toni had me at page one and never let me go and I was the most ecstatic captive. I have recommended this book to anyone I've ever met who seemed serious about good writing. I've read all of her books, with the exception of Paradise, which I'm saving as a reward for finishing some writing of my own. Toni is supernatural in her command of the craft. You can learn so much just by reading one of her passages over and over. Her writing hypnotizes because not only are the stories compelling, but the reader is keenly aware of the intelligence and the spirit pulsing through the writing. She was possessed by Guitar and his Seven Days, by Milkman and Macon Dead, by First Corinthians and her velvet flowers, Pilate with no navel and Hagar with her desperate obsession, and she gives them all masterful expression. she is a fitting vehicle indeed! These are characters who feel deeply and who are radically different from what most of us like to think we are. By dissecting the town, however, Morrison shows that we're all strange creatures beneath the surface.I've been in several reader's circles and invariably someone will say that they couldn't get into the book, that it was too cryptic or that they didn't make it past "Doctor Street and Not-Doctor Street." I always advise them to perservere, that they will be greatly rewarded if they do. Aside from the arresting insights, the stunning beauty of the language and the breadth of the novel's scope, I've always been fascinated, as a writer myself, with the incredible amount of work that must have gone into this novel. The research alone-- and then weaving all those threads together! From the book I say to prospective readers: "If you surrendered to the wind, you could ride it!"
Rating: Summary: One of the greatest novels you will ever read. Review: This novel, both beautifully written and seamlessly constructed, should already be seen as a true American classic. There is not one person who I have recommended it to who hasn't loved it as much as I did.
Rating: Summary: The best book I've ever read! Review: I have never been so intrigued by a book or an author the way that I was with this novel. Morrison tells the story so well; I feel as though she is my grandmother telling me a story of long ago. More than just entertainment, the novel taught me so much about life, and what it is cracked up to be.
Rating: Summary: Why? Review: The accolades for Morrison's are not just over the top, they seriously misguided. Just because her writing is unreadable many think they have read something important. Oprah says its good and its impossible to understand - must be great. No, simply overinflated egos and very bad writing.
