Rating: Summary: Can I Be a Dirty Girl? Review: This was our book club selection for the month, so it wasn't a book that I would have normally picked up but am glad that I had the chance to read it. The story centers around six Latina girls that met while attending Boston college. They all (mostly) live in the Boston area still and stay in touch, but make sure that they attend their "sucia" nights twice a year to REALLY catch up on each other's lives. It is very much a character story and those are the kinds of books that I enjoy most. Each chapter is from the perspective of a different girl, but carries on the stories of all of them within. It can get confusing, but you learn the characters quickly in the book. I'm not sure if I was supposed to learn anything culturally from the book, but I did enjoy the story of the six friends. I would recommend this book as a good summer read.
Rating: Summary: Viva Las Sucias! Review: This was a great book! It was one of those that you hated to finish, because once you did, there was no more. Until Alisa writes another one, that is.My advice to you? Buy it and read it. It's a keeper.
Rating: Summary: Fun Read Review: The Dirty Girls Social Club was the most fun I've had reading a book in a long time. I actually laughed out loud and I'm not talking about a chuckle either, I'm talking about a hold your belly, roaring laughter type funny. Alisa Valdes-Rodriguez manages to tell the story of six women who meet in college and become best friends with out letting any of their personalities become diluted. Each Character is different from the other and has her own issues to deal with and I have to say I can identify with a lot of what's going on in the book. I hope you enjoy the book as much as I did.
Rating: Summary: A Reading Pleasure Review: I just finished teaching this June and I found this book in the local bookstore. The book cover's story line intrigued and appealed to my sense of cultural individuality. I purchased the book on a Thursday and finished reading it the following Sunday. This book was extremely enjoyable to start in a summer book reading club. Of the five "Suscias" I saw myself in two of the finely developed characters. I highly recommend this novel to many aficionado's book collection. Not only will it appeal to your pleasure senses, it will awaken and tantalize your intellect.
Rating: Summary: down to earth light summer reading Review: this is a wonderful book - a realistic portrait of a circle of friends. i'm always saying that my life could be a soap opera - but this book would make a good one too :) i think the negatives reviews by other readers may have stemmed from their lofty expectations of this book being the voice of the young latina generation...and that's way too cerebral. i don't imagine the author expects this to be an important social commentary. it's a fun book and the isolated story of a few, select latinas in one city. if you take it for what it is, i think you will enjoy it. anywho - i loved it! it's definately 'light' reading (read: i finished it in a day), but with all the drama in my life, i need that every once in a while!
Rating: Summary: This book is amazing! Review: Never has a book spoken to me as purely and as deeply as The Dirty Girls Social Club. The contrast I face by growing up with a native Puerto-Rican mom and an American dad can be trying at times, not to mention the cultural conflicts I face every day in the outside world. Perhaps it is because I am a young woman in NYC, fresh from graduating with a communications degree like the women in the novel, that I related to them on the extreme level that I did. The hybrid of Spanish and American slang, situations, and even foods mentioned were so realistic to me that they gave me goosebumps. With each chapter about a sole character, I laughed, cried, and felt as if each woman was real due to the intimacy they were created with. Absolutely everyone can relate to this masterfully-written read no matter what their their background is, which is deliciously sucia.
Rating: Summary: Great Summer Read Review: I liked the book enough to read it on while on vacation. It's not a great literary masterpiece, but it's witty and funny enough to enjoy. I think people are reading too much into this "latina" thing, maybe it's the "it" word now, just like "Waiting To Exhale" was in the 90's. Don't read to much into it, just enjoy it.
Rating: Summary: A major Latina Letdown Review: This book was improperly marketed and was poorly written. Why all the hype? I have no idea other than the fact that Latinas are searching for more representation. This book was not thoroughly researched in terms of Christianity being that she does make it a focal point of her story but with the ignorance of someone who has never actually read the Bible herself. Also, this book was not a "fun" read. This book dealt with very serious and controversial issues that she tried to make "funny". I was deeply disappointed by this book and felt that it was very misleading to a whole generation of up and coming Latin American women. I also will not be watching this as a movie. I enjoy Jennifer Lopez as an actress but not enough to listen to this immature story twice. Pass this book up!
Rating: Summary: ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS!!! Review: You will not be disappointed with this book. Especially if you are Latina (or a wanna-be latina like me) you will appreciate the sections in Spanish and her comments about different aspects of the Hispanic culture. It was a beautiful and unpredictable story of friends in their 20's. I laughed, I cried, and if you are unsure of buying this book, I'm telling you---it's worth it!!! I can't believe this is her first book and look forward to reading many more!!!
Rating: Summary: Quite a Fairy tale ending!! Review: I picked up this book because im a student at BU and it was really neat to read about the whole Boston scene.... anyways... this novel was a quick, "chick-flick" read, but at times the story was unbelievable and the end was totally unfeasiable and down right to perfect. It was by no means a bad book....but can not be considred a literary masterpiece
