Rating: Summary: A Guilty Pleasure Review: This is an excellent book to read when you want something enjoyable. Something to which you will not necessarily need to devote your full attention. It reads exceptionally quickly and is very entertaining. On the other hand, the happy ending for all of the characters is quite unbelievable and exceptionally predictable. Additionally, Valdes-Rodriguez makes so many pop culture references that I began to wonder if she had a quota or perhaps was being paid for product placement. Overall, I think your reaction to this book will depend on what you're seeking. If you're seeking a quick, entertaining read, this is a great book. However, if you're seeking something deeper, something to make a grand cultural statement, keep looking.
Rating: Summary: Sort of good, sort of......not Review: This book looked like a fun, light read about a small group of friends sorting out their 30s together. And in many ways it was - there was some humor and light moments. The author also explored some more serious issues in a thoughtful way as well. But what I found insulting was the way Valdes-Rodriguez portrayed anyone who didn't share her liberal outlook. She slammed Christians as a group, Dr. James Dobson and Dr. Laura Schlessinger. This added a bitter edge to her tone and I was alienated by her attitude. The characters themselves weren't all that likeable either. Usnavys was a shallow woman that in reality a quality man like Jose wouldn't have found tolerable, the rest of them were very two-dimensional, and the ending was wrapped up far too neatly.
Rating: Summary: ~ Life~ Review: OK..so I guess by some reviewers reactions they expected Valdes-Rodriquez to make all the heroines in her story strong, super Latina's...but just like in real life women of all races struggle with the same stuff...weight,cheating husbands/boyfriends, abuse, sex, insecurities, parents who expect too much, career issues etc. There were some characters in this book I loved and couldn't wait to find out what would happen with them and others (Amber) I wanted to skip the chapter when it focused on her. Rodriquez is a good little sroryteller and this her first novel is just a warm up for her talent I believe. This was a fun summer beach read.
Rating: Summary: Light & Fun Review: This book is a very entertaining read...especially if you're an American Latina. That being said, I did feel it fell short of capturing the true American Latina experience, though I believe the author tried. At times, the characters did seem like stereotypes, and stereotype breakers, that were there merely to dispel public perception. All in all though, I must say that I can't knock this book, because it met my expectations in many other regards. It was quick, interesting and fun... with a few surprises. It's a good escapist read that is well written. No, it won't change the world, but not every book has to. I look forward to the movie and sincerely hope that Latina actresses will be cast in the leading roles.
Rating: Summary: Better than I expected Review: I bought the book after reading an excerpt in Latina magazine, scrounged up the last [dollar] that i had and bought the book, and i have to say thats its one of the best investments that I have made! Valdes-Rodriguez's characters may be considered to be over the top by some, but there were so many point where I connected with Lauren, Usnavys, and even Elizabeth. The most important thing that I got out of the book was the reality that latina women cannot be encompassed into one image, whether it be Mexican, or fair skinned Cuban, but they in fact, come from a wide array of ethnic, racial, and social backgrounds. Im sharing the book with all my girls, and hope that you dont pass out on it considering it to be some cliched story of latina women, it truly is worth the read.
Rating: Summary: pure entertainment, not up and coming literature Review: I picked it up because the subject matter interested me. Latina women living in Boston getting together to talk about their trials and tribulations. Well, the book is like going to see one of those adventure flicks that are so often at the movies nowadays. You go for mind numbing entertainment. That's what this is. While the book starts with lots of potential it soon divulges itself to be nothing more than a fantasy. And if that is what the author meant it to be, then so be it. It is nothing more and nothing less. It was interesting to come across anecdotes and places relating to Boston and to the world of Latinos. I can relate to both. The author is accurate in that sense and if only for that the book is pleasurable to read.
Rating: Summary: Excellent!! Review: This is a wonderful first effort from Alisa Valdes-Rodriguez. I can't wait for more! The Dirty Girls Social Club tells the tales of 6 Latina friends from Boston. They met in college and following graduation, made a commitment to meet all together twice a year to reconnect. Each chapter focuses on a different sucia (or dirty girl) and each one has something that is going on in their life that they need to work out. It is so wonderful to have a group of friends like these to be there for you no matter what, to help you work those issues out. It makes you want to ask them if you could join up and be the 7th dirty girl!
Rating: Summary: Great Summer Read Review: This book was awesome. Even my mom is reading it and loves it, so it appeals to all ages. The characters are so well developed and diverse.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful Book Maravilloso! Review: I just could not put the book down. I became addicted to it as soon as I bought it. In contrast to some other reader's reviews, I believe that this book portrays quite well the different lifestyles that we all Latinas have come to experience upclose. I sincerely relate to some of the sucias while I found other sucias relating to friends or family of mine. It is a great book, I recommend it to all and I just can't wait for her next book! I love the sucias....A Must Read Book!
Rating: Summary: One of my favorites!!! Review: This book is something that I have been looking for! It has everything! It's a fun book and the characters are wonderful! I wish these sucias were my amigas!
