Rating: Summary: Pretentious Book Club Garbage... Review: ...masquerading as science fiction. It is every OTHER "book club" book out there. Written soley for the purpose of people getting together so they can say they are in a book club. She just happened to throw time travel in as her gimmick. But if you are going to explain an unexplainable plot device such as time travel, either think it all the way through or just let it remain a mystery. A chromosomal defect? Just another way to throw some angsty miscarriages on to the already angst-overloaded plot containing such apparent favorites as "drunk father," and "died from cancer mother." Oh, and don't forget "horrible, tragic, and dramtically ironic death!" She could not have insulted the reader more with Henry's demise and her forshadowing of it.I couldn't even bring myself to finish this book. I quickly skimmed ahead making sure the author didn't do a complete 360 and somehow redeem this trainwreck - but no. I could go on, but my (at last count I believe it was three) comrades (see, I can use that term too, Ms. N. It isn't just for your pretentious underdeveloped characters!) pretty much said enough of what I've wanted to say. I will remember to stick to my rules and just say no to anything that has any sort of "Book Club" seal of approval on it, even if it does try to lure me with tales of time travel. To sum it up - what a piece of crap.
Rating: Summary: I love You Always Review: At first, I thought it is just another love story combined with time travel thing, BUT I was so mistaken. Since some of the reviewers have already gave the plot, I just want to say my opinion after reading it: I feel the tragedy and the happiness in Henry and Clare's marriage were beautifully composed and with each chapter, achieved their pure meaning until the very last page. It was like eating a very delicious caramel ice cream with chocolate fudge (my fave) and sometimes the cold that makes your head ache, but give you ultimate satisfaction until the last drop and the taste is still lingering in your tounge and brain.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Book! Review: This book was recommended by a friend and I am so glad that she convinced me to read it. It was truly a wonderful story. I couldn't put it down, couldn't wait to find out what was going to happen to Henry and Clare next. It is well-written, romantic, suspenseful, compelling. I disagree with the reviewer who said that the paper making descriptions were too long and unnecessary. Any time the art form was described it had a place and purpose in the plot of the story. I hope that this will not be Niffenegger's last work.
Rating: Summary: Not compelling enough to read it all... Review: The idea of the story is very intersting. I like the idea and I enjoy the characters, although I do agree with another reviewer that there are two Henrys. At the point I am at now, I cannot imagine how Henry morphs into the time-traveling menace he becomes. All of that said, I am on page 240. I am getting extremely bored - after reading some of it every day for two weeks (Two weeks! A sure sign I am not overly involved as it rarely takes me this long to read a book!), I am playing with the idea of reading a paragraph or two on every page and skipping the rest to get to the end. So little is actually happening now, and it doesn't lend much to the plot or to character development. When I have a good read, I cannot wait to get home in the evening to pick up the book and delve in. I read this one only during lunch hour, and prowl the house at night, watching TV and reading magazines. I expected to be so much more excited, such as the idea of time travel is so interesting to me. But it seems like an aside to tell a plain ole love story, and that to me is the big shame of this book. But if you enjoy love stories with a dash of something different thrown into the mix, this just may become your favorite book!
Rating: Summary: Could this happen to you? Review: The Time Traveler's Wife is one of those books whos reading leads to loss of sleep, meaning you'll have trouble putting it down. It reads like a journal switching points-of-view, and makes you think "What if?" Henry leapfrogs time in his wife's and his own life, one looking only backward and the other forward. The things we'd change if we could. Maybe we know people who travel unawares. It could happen!
Rating: Summary: Not a friend of the author Review: This book is great for insomniacs. My review in one word: BORING!
Rating: Summary: A CHORE ....... Review: I really don't review books often, but this one has to be stopped. It's just awful. Everything about it is just awful. Laughable and awful. It is a book intended to be discussed at painfully chic parties by painfully hip people dressed in absurdly expensive black clothing. From the start the author wants you to understand that she is the product of an extremly expensive private education, that she has an extremly sucessful, satisfying career and that she wrote this book to add one more fascinating line to an already impressive resume. I'm about one third of the way through it and I hate the main characters, the story is slow and the premis is nothing new. Give me a break!!! It's that old TV show "Quantum Leap" without any of the fun. If you must read it borrow it from the library because it's not worth buying.
Rating: Summary: Believable and readable Review: This was a great story and would have stood on its own quite well without the time travel element. But with that added facet it became even more enthralling. This is not a science fiction "time traveling" sort of genre/story, but rather a very human and real tale, told wonderfully. Also recommended: McCrae's BARK OF THE DOGWOOD
Rating: Summary: my new favorite book Review: its a romance without being female porn, its a thriller without all the gore... this book had a little bit of everything; it made me laugh, tear up, and bite my nails- sometimes all at the same time. It was just over all entertaining and I'd recomend it to anyone interested in staying in on a rainy day just reading in bed.
Rating: Summary: Original but the characters needed deeper development Review: The story is a very original concept and is told in a cohesive manner. However, aside from Henry and Clare, the characters are very sparsely developed. The love story and interplay between Henry and his daugher did make me appreciate the time I have with my spouse and children more and really reminded me that I can never take that time for granted.
