Rating: Summary: Like Anne Tyler with a dash of H.G. Wells Review: This would be an interesting and touching novel even without the time travel stuff. These people are believable, they want to be in love and have a family, and they have complicated lives. With the addition of involuntary time travel, it is ingenious. The time travel is not hocus-pocus but rather matter-of-fact. It makes some scenes of romantic and domestic life even more revealing. And some minor moments become big. The audiobook readers also deserve commendation. They have clear diction, good intonation, and interesting variation in tone. They make good characterizations without overwhelming the text. Good work.
Rating: Summary: Loved it! Review: This was one of those books where even after I finished the book I could not get the characters out of my mind! Niffenegger did an excellent job of telling the story of a phenomenon, and the struggles and triumphs in a marriage. I have reccommended this to all my friends, married and single, even to book clubs! It was just SO interesting and compelling! And yet, still a love story.
Rating: Summary: Great fun! Review: I was initially worried when I started reading, thinking that the "back and forth" shuttling of time and incidents was going to be too complex to keep up with, but Niffenegger does a remarkable job of keeping things straight. This was, overall, one of the best things I've read in a long time and great fun! Would also recommend McCrae's BARK OF THE DOGWOOD and THE DA VINCI CODE.
Rating: Summary: Best book I've read in a long time Review: I got more sheer enjoyment out of this book than anything I've read in a long time--and I read probably a hundred books a year. The love story is beautiful, touching, and absolutely different. The paradoxes of time travel are laid out in front of you, but you are never hit over the head with them. The circularity of time in the novel means that Clare and Henry never actually choose each other--they have always already chosen, sometime.
Rating: Summary: Worth It! Review: I had never read a book about time travel and found it confusing for the first 45 pages or so. Then I just stopped concentrating so hard on the dates and ages and everything fell into place. It's a wonderful book that's worth your time. If you find yourself confused at the beginning, just lighten up and enjoy it. Anxiously awaiting Niffenegger's next book!
Rating: Summary: It's good but... Review: Time Traveler's Wife works wonderfully as a time travel story, a genre that I love. What didn't work for me as well was the self-serving attitude of the author. Another reviewer called this book pretentious (though didn't identify the "world enough and time" quote correctly) and while I didn't agree for most of the book, I felt that the last quarter of the book was a chance for the author to show off her "art". Niffenegger is an artist of the same sort as her main character, and while a little of it was interesting, the book could've been trimmed by about a third and not have lost the best of the story or the writing. I found the parts dealing with her art to be pretentious without adding anything to the story. It's a good story, well written but I thought it could've been edited better.
Rating: Summary: A must read...or listen Review: This book is one of the best books I have read in a long time...and I read a lot. It is the perfect blend of love story and science fiction. I would highly recommend it. I also listened to the audible version of the book. The readers were absolutely wonderful and perfect in their portrayal of the characters. I can't say enough good things about this book. I am overwhelmed by its beauty.
Rating: Summary: Beautiful Love Story Review: A lot of these other reviewers have already clued you into the story line of this superb first novel, so I won't give you those details here. I just wanted to tell you that the book was so imaginitive, so hard to put down. One of the most romantic books I have ever read, I found myself haunted by Henry and Clare, missing them when I had finished the novel.
Rating: Summary: Good Read- but a little too long Review: Very enjoyable book to those of us who are time travel freaks. Very interesting style of writing. Book is too long and could have done away with the last 150 pages.
Rating: Summary: I loved this book! Review: I thought this book was absolutely lovely! For the people who thought the story was "unbelievable," isn't that the point of science fiction/fantasy books? They're all about unbelievable situations, and you just have to throw yourself into the story and go with it. I do agree that the author could and should have gone into greater detail with the supporting characters' motivations (namely, Gomez), which is one reason I felt so sad at the end of the book. I wanted to know more! However, I thought she did a great job with the two main characters. Their actions and reactions felt very real to me, like something I would do myself. The story examines the meaning of true love and destiny in a totally creative way. And although thinking about the looping chronology makes me dizzy, the author did a wonderful job of making it clear to the reader exactly what was going on at what time. I think I finished this book in about four hours. I could feel the story hurtling toward an ending that I didn't want to read (I knew it was going to be tragic!); however, I just couldn't stop reading. I don't usually read sci-fi or fantasy, but I feel that this story is really a love story that happens to have elements of fantasy in it. I will definitely keep an eye out for future books from this author.
