Rating: Summary: AWFUL ROMANCE NOVEL Review: If you expect a witty, funny, interesting or anything along the lines of Kingsolver's prior novels, this book is not for you.If you expect Jackie Collins Romance with a far fetched story line about the classic city girl vs. country boy, then THIS IS YOUR BOOK!
Rating: Summary: Fantastic! Review: I am a new reader of Ms. Kingsolver, I just never thought I would enjoy her books. But thankfully, someone suggested to my sister that we would enjoy them so I went back and read her earlier books and was so glad that at the time I finished them her new book was just coming out. Not only do I surround myself with her words, read and read passages just to savor them, but I enjoy the characters, even the ones I don't particularly like. And of course, I always learn something about a subject I didn't even realize I would enjoy learning about. Ms. Kingsolver is a wonderful writer, read this book, and if you haven't read her others, read those too. I envy anyone the experience of reading her books for the first time. I wonder how it will be when I go back and reread them, because I'm sure I will!
Rating: Summary: There are no words Review: There's no reason to analyze this book. I can just say, simply, this book is exquisite. Read it.
Rating: Summary: Another Fantastic Book From Kingsolver! Review: This book is a joy to Kingsolver fans. Like her other books, it offers an engaging story set in a highly interesting locale with very real, very human characters. It has moments of sorrow, joy and even touches of humor. As I read the book, it struck me that the characters and their emotions hit very close to home. While we might never find ourselves in the Congo, any of us could be in similar situations emotionally. This book is a story with down to earth characters and some of the most gorgeous and lush descriptions ever written. You will feel like you are in the jungles of Africa watching the events as they unfold! Definitely one of the best books of 2000!
Rating: Summary: Beautiful writing, beautiful story Review: Babara Kingsolver is one of my absolutely all-time favorite writers and this book does not disappoint. Her characters are so real that you expect them to come knock on your door. Her writing style is flawless. I didn't want this book to end! Fans of Alice Hoffman's Second Nature, or Linda Hogan's Mean Spirits, or Terry Windling's The Wood Wife, will also love this dazzling book about love, landscape, and life. I couldn't put it down. Bravo, Ms. Kingsolver.
Rating: Summary: What a pleasure! Review: A book of this sort is such a rarity, a work that is not often given to us. It is sheer pleasure to share. the proliferation of wierdness and violence lines shelves and I'm sure they have their place...but how nice for this one!
Rating: Summary: They keep getting better and better Review: I have read all of Barbara Kingsolver's books and this is one that just got me from the first page. She writes eloquently and is able to describe the simplist thought in so many different ways. I find her writing a cut above. Her descriptions and analogies bring the reader into the story from the perspective of the character. The research that has gone into this book is phenomenal and characteristic of Barbara Kingsolver with detail that the human senses absorb, but the average person cannot describe. She makes her characters whole and gives the reader the ability to develop a visual interpretation of her perception. I wish I wouldn't have to wait for another Kingsolver novel to hit the presses. I want to go to the next one right away. What a talent.
Rating: Summary: A Great Read Review: As usual Kingsolver's dialogue is absolutely natural, often funny, and sometimes hearbreaking...With [her characters] she has created the most refreshing and funny love affair of the year...These three female protagonists struggle against a culture that denigreates them for not being "natural ladies," but in nature, they find far more profound ways to be women. After curling up with my favorite reading music, John McArthur's HIDDEN, I drifted into Kingslover's world and couldn't put the book down.
Rating: Summary: Prodical Summer Review: What a beautifully written story. Barbara Kingsolver has long been a favorite for her ability to evoke the beauty and subtleties of nature. This book is a treasure for anyone who enjoys true characters, lush scenery and the truthfulness of everyday life.
Rating: Summary: Disappointing after Poisonwood Bible Review: I really wanted to like this book. Her descriptions of nature were great. But to me it seemed that her words were merged with the words of a trashy dime store romance. "Cole made love like a farmer...he had a fine intelligence that drove him toward earthy scents, seeking out with his furred mouth, her soft, damp places, turning her like fresh earth toward the glory of new growth. Her body,...became something new in the embrace of a man who judged breeding animals with his hands..." I did not find the characters behaved in ways consistant with what an actual person would. To live alone for several years in the forrest, meet someone alone in the woods, barely know their name, and then fall into bed with them, is beyond belief. A good story is ruined by badly written sex scenes.
