Rating: Summary: An Unexpected Romance-- Great Story!!! Review: "Something Borrowed" is the story of best friends Darcy and Rachel and Darcy's fiancee Dex. Darcy and Rachel have been best friends since their childhood in Indiana, and now they both are living in Manhattan. Darcy is engaged to marry Dexter Thaler, who was introduced to her by none other than Rachel. On the night before Rachel's 30th birthday, Darcy throws a surprise party for her. As the party winds down, everyone leaves except for Dex and Rachel. They decide to go have another drink together, and after that, one thing leads to another, and they wind up together in bed at Darcy's apartment. At first, Rachel tries to rationalize her fling with Dex as a one-nighter after too much to drink, but both she and Dex come to realize that they have true feelings for one another. They continue to see each other over the summer, and as Dexter and Darcy's September wedding date gets ever closer, Dex and Rachel agonize about the future.
Rachel had always been "Daddy's perfect little girl"; that is, until the fling with Dex. Throughout her friendship with Darcy, Rachel has always felt the competitiion of being friends with the prettiest girl in class, the one who always gets what she wants. I really like the character of Rachel, loved her struggle with the guilt of cheating on her best friend.
The three main characters in this story are well-developed. Author Giffin has done a great job with them. I hate to classify this book as just "chick-lit", because it has so much more to offer. Humor and a convincing tale of friendship are on every page. This was a thoroughly enjoyable book. I would recommend it to all readers, not just twenty-something "chicks".
Rating: Summary: Best book of all time Review: I absolutely enjoyed reading this story! This is definitely one of my most-favorites and will be a wonderful re-read...if you haven't got this book, go out and buy it. Its worth your money!
Rating: Summary: Amazing Book! Review: I bought this book yesterday, and could not out it down! I was a little skeptical at first, but sooooo glad I bought. It has you rooting for the underdog and hating the best friend, and really makes you think. READ IT!
Rating: Summary: Hard to put down Review: I found myself wanting to read this book non-stop; I'm suprised I even went to work!! The book now has given competition to my previous favorite: Confessions of a Shopaholic!! The author has succeeded in portraying the love, bond, competitiveness and animosity between friends as they age. The flashbacks were great, and I found myself thinking about old friends and our experiences while growing up in the eighties. A wonderful read, which, as a bookstore worker, I will definitely suggest to customers!!
Rating: Summary: Completely enjoyable ! I really loved it! Review: I have never read a novel so quickly before....I simply didn't want to put it down. I easily got into the characters; their ever-entwining lives, the simplicity of their feelings, as well as the complexity of their feelings. Most of all, I could relate to the main character and the handfull of different female friendships she juggled that effected her throughout. Emily Giffin has a great writing style, a wonderful sense of humor (I laughed aloud so many times while reading this!), an incredible memory of both childhood and teenage retrospects that I loved being reminded of (thank you!). It was a pleasure to read this story....and I certainly hope there will be a continuation to this simple but yet complex, fun, nail-biting, twisting, enjoyable journey of these characters that are now on my mind and that I hold dear. I really loved it!
Rating: Summary: Put this on your summer read list!!! Review: I have to reinterate the other readers comments in saying I couldn't put it down. This book really gets into the complexities, loves and hates of female relationships. It especially captures the lifeline of a friendship and how it changes as we become women. You end the book wanting to call all of your best friends. The author is amazingly gifted at showing the Rachel's conflicting feelings and how no situation is as black and white as it seems. What I loved most about the book is that although the plot is based on a love story, it's not the male female relationship that is focused - it's the evolution of a 'best friendship.'
Rating: Summary: Amazing Debut Review: I loved this book so much, I reread it one week after finishing it the first time. Dex is a guy you have to fall in love with and there are so many great scenes with powerful undercurrents. I loved the beach scene. This book really makes you feel for the characters and keeps you hoping that things will work out. I am keenly awaiting Emily Giffins next novel.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful Review: I must admit, I was a bit skeptical when I read the back. How on earth was I going to like someone who sleeps with her best friend's fiancee? But I knew I wanted to read it and am so glad I did. The characters are wonderfully developed and once you realize what kind of person Darcy is, you can't help but root for Rachel. This is one of those books you don't want to end. It looks like Emily Giffin has a new book, "Something Blue", I hope it is a continuation of these characters! Even if it isn't a sequel, I can't wait till it comes out, since Giffin does an outstanding job of creating likeable and memorable characters. Highly recommended!
Rating: Summary: Not your typical "boy cheats on girl" novel Review: I was hooked on this book from page one! The characters were so well-developed that it seemed they came to life from the pages. I thought the author giving the reader more insight about Darcy's and Rachel's friendship through flashbacks was creative. It helped put the "affair" into perspective. Definitely one of the best books I've read this summer.
Rating: Summary: A step beyond "chick lit" Review: Like so many other current novels, Something Borrowed focuses on good looking, successful, fun, and somewhat outrageous women in Manhattan looking for true love. The similarity to these other books ends there, as Something Borrowed explores an illicit relationship from the perspective of the woman having an affair with her best friend's fiance. Rachel is a transplant from Indiana, unhappily employed in NYC as an associate at a law firm. Her best friend, Darcy, is engaged to marry one of Rachel's friends from law school. Darcy is the perfect girl--pretty, vivacious, always gets what she wants, although somewhat petulant and demanding. Just a few months before the wedding, Rachel has a one night stand with Darcy's fiance that develops into a full fledged love affiar. Emily Giffin treats what could be an awkward topic with respect and empathy for all the characters. Although Darcy is at times portrayed as a stereotype, most likely to be a better foil for Rachel's good girl persona, the reader is also treated to Darcy's sense of fun and loyalty. This is a remarkably well written first novel, and one that I highly recommend.
