Rating: Summary: A Well-written book, but... Review: McMillan's in-your-face and direct writing style was, as usual, wonderful. I just had too many issues with this book. First of all, I just don't understand a woman like Zora with so much talent and promise letting herself be dragged down by a married, ignorant, alcoholic, domineering, unmotivated, and abusive man. On the other hand, maybe that was just the point. Maybe that's what made Zora so believable is that there are so many women like that out there. Yet, it still angered me. Franklin cheated on her, hit her, raped her, and made her live in fear. Yes she loved him, but I think there would have been more power to the book had she forced him to stay out of her life and stand on her own. The transformation of her best friend Porschia, however, was wonderful. The hootchie mama with so many men calling her that she was afraid to answer her phone, settled down by the end of the book, became a mother and went back to school. She showed an intelligence in her decision-making that, while I was indifferent to her at the beginning of the book, endeared her to me by the end. Why couldn't Zora have been allowed to do the same. If she had, I would have happily given this book the 5 stars that it probably deserves.
Rating: Summary: truly awesome Review: One of the best fiction books ever written. Period. Terry's ability to get inside of the man's mind is incredible. You'd think it was co-authored with a guy. The kind of book you hate to see come to an end, since it's so good you know you'll rarely read a book this fine.
Rating: Summary: Somewhat dissapointng, though captivating Review: It's a fun book, and really makes you think about your own relationships and why men are threatened by successful women. However, I liked Stella better and was expecting the same fast-paced stream of consciousness in the narrative. The ending was also somewhat dissapointing to me. Still, I couldn't put it down. A good novel to take to the beach.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Review: I read this book, and it's one of the best, if not the best book I've read.
Rating: Summary: Excellent! Review: I thought "Diappearing Acts" was one of the best books I have ever read. It was thought provoking, entertaining, and most of all:real. I think McMillan did an superb job of capturing the chemistry, power and passion of the Black man and woman's relationship. I believe this book represented many different Black couples relationships......I felt Zora... The only thing is that I wish she had gave the the ending more closure more of a wrap-up.....But overall I think the book is the best McMillan has written and this wonderful piece of work should be developed into a film project.
Rating: Summary: read it twice; loved it both times Review: Loved it. What mo'can I say? Touching, hysterical, shocking -- and that was on page 1. The pace was fantastic, the characters real enough to make me forget it was fiction. It was a journey and I enjoyed every page of the ride.
Rating: Summary: Fast reading & funny! Review: This is one of my all time favorite books! Terry McMillan is an excellent author, her books are hip to the times & make you laugh out loud. If you only pick one of her books to read, pick this one!
Rating: Summary: Great Review: I really enjoyed this book. Terry McMillian's use of comedy in her writing adds special flavor and uniqueness to her writing styles. I am looking forward a new release in the very near future.
Rating: Summary: Sexy, seductive, and very captivating drama! Review: The story line from the very beginning captured my attention until I finished it two days later! The character's are very much like every day people and even explore some of the same triumphs, downfalls, and fantasies of real life. I love this book and would recommend it to all!
Rating: Summary: I Really Liked This Book... Review: I really liked this book. It was the first book I read by Terry McMillan and I was very intrigued by her devastating witt. She is a wonderful writer as well as an all around homegirl. Her characters are so very real.
