Rating: Summary: I wrote a review previously but it was not posted... Review: This book was very real in its portrayal of the way women need men in their lives and will allow even extremely dysfunctional men to share their lives out of simple fear of loneliness and sexual needs. As a feminist, I too deplore the way her lover treated Zorah, who should have known better. But shouldn't we all? They used to say that lesbians were on the front lines of the women's movement, but I've always felt straight women were, because they have to share their hearts and beds with the enemy. It's not easy being a woman in a man's world, and sometimes we have to take what we can get if we want the social status that comes with having a man. Also, by the time Zorah realized how destructive Frank could be, she was already in love with him. It's very difficult for a woman to UN-love a man, because women are trained to love unconditionally. Actually, it's a beautiful trait that often gets us in trouble. I happen to think it's great to simply live alone or be without a man - many women can do that. But sometimes a jerk just slips in. McMillan realistically portrays this moment in a woman's life. Also - Frank redeemed himself by apologizing for everything and getting into career and substance abuse recovery in the end. He wasn't a complete scoundrel; just a sef-centered a---h---. Any of you girlfriends out there recognize him?
Rating: Summary: Best book ever! Review: I found the book very realistic. She made the characters come to life with her descriptions of both Zora and Franklin. It was wonderful!
Rating: Summary: Enjoyed seeing real life on paper!! Review: Okay,so I read the book. It was the bomb for it being my first black novel but when I went back and read bits and pieces of it again, I realized how weak Franklin actually made Zora. Our girl went downhill in relation to her common senses and uphill in relation to her weakness. So what if the brotha was fine! He was broke, barely educated, and plain old disrespectful: everything Zora was not. When are we ladies(of all nationalities) going to learn to listen to God and see past that playaz charm? But even with soft-hard, love-hate characters, the girl(Terry) can put that pen to the paper and make you feel what they would feel if they were real and THAT is what makes a good writer. At any rate, I still enjoyed seeing real life on paper. I would love to further discuss this and other books via e-mail at sugabunz@yahoo.com.
Rating: Summary: terry hits it whether we like it or not. Review: well, this is the second time that i've read this book, for lack of anything else that is better. terry was able to get into the minds of both characters. terry got so far into to some of these black men's minds that it was scary. franklin had so much resentment for his heartless mother, and his tolerent, or absentee father that it spilled off into his relationships with everybody. like it or not, we women seem to carry most of the weight for or son's and how they treat women. if their daddy don't get it right, then that's where we have to do damage contol. franklin finally realizes this at the end of the book. but i only wish i could have seen if he made it. best book ever.
Rating: Summary: Disappearing Acts is an excelent book. Review: I love the book, it was so real and Iam sure that a lot of people agree with me. I will support Mrs. McMillan, on any book she may write. I was hoping that Disappesring Acts be put on film I already had the actors in mind, that should play the parts. Jada Pinkett Micahel T and a couple of other good actors. Thanks for reading my review.
Rating: Summary: A truthful depiction of many womens lives. Review: I couldn't put this book down, it was a mirror into many lives of black women in the 80's and even today. This story tells about a strong black woman who has had many failed relationships in the past who tries to make this one last.this is a must for anyones' book list.
Rating: Summary: Well written but disappointing! Review: McMilliam did an excellent job describing the characters Zora and Franklin. You really felt what each character was going through. I was a little disappointed with Zora and the choices she made as far as Franklin was concerned. Before she met Franklin she was a strong, black woman who after meeting the sex-crazed, handsome, "can't hold a job" man, became his sole provider on more than one occassion.
Rating: Summary: ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL!!!! Review: I finished this book in one day because I couldn't put it down!! It had me hanging on tighter and tighter page after page. It made me want to slap the characters for the mistakes they made and hug them when it got good! I WANTED to be there. It was so REAL!
Rating: Summary: this book was the bomb Review: i thought that the book was a great one for various ages. Keep on doing good terry
Rating: Summary: This book was so compelling I've read it more than twice! Review: This book was so real and it didn't cut any corners for any happily ever after endings. Mrs. McMillian shows that you can find love but it's not very easy.
