Rating: Summary: The Author really has knowledge for detail Review: This was a great book, she depicted a true romantic story between people of color. The movie was on cable network recently and it was excellent. I could relate to it, some parts of the movie hit home. On the second time around (watched it a few times) my husband watched it with me. At first he kind of pretended he really didn't get into it by reading his newspaper, but he put the paper down and really showed interest. After the movie was over he asked if I still had the book. Unfortunately, I passed the book on to a relative, who also passed it on, and on. I have to give it to the Author she knows her stuff. And we, the readers of color, want more.
Rating: Summary: Terri @ her best! Review: This touching story proves that Terri can and has mastered the male voice. She put us inside the head of a man and let us know what their fears are, what they're thinking and how they view relationships and love. If she could get back on track with her writing like this I'll be the first in line. I'm awaiting the moview!
Rating: Summary: Left wanting more¿why did Zora have faith in Franklin? Review: I read this book for the first time about 10 years ago when it first came out. Re-reading it made me realize how much I've grown in the last 10 years. The first time I read this book (and, in some ways, this time too), I was just disgusted with Franklin and disgusted with Zora for putting up with him. How could she let him manipulate and control her? How could she allow him to keep coming back into her life after so much drama? Then I realized you have got to walk in her shoes before you judge her. Zora is in LOVE. She doesn't just love this man, she is IN LOVE with him-which allows her to be patient and to do things that we don't do when we operate with our heads rather than our hearts. I want to think that in the end, Zora gets the ultimate blessing because Franklin recognizes her commitment. I think Terry McMillan did an excellent job developing Franklin's character in this book; she tries to make you somewhat sympathetic to his trials. However, I wish she had further developed Zora's character so that we can better understand what makes her willing to wade through Franklin's pitiful, trifling ways.
Rating: Summary: SPECTACULAR TRUE TO LIFE FICTION Review: I HEARD ON TELEVISION THAT DISAPPEARING ACTS WAS BEING MADE INTO A MOVIE. IMMEDIATLY I ORDERED THE BOOK. THIS IS THE BEST PURCHASE I HAVE MADE ALL YEAR. THIS BOOK HITS SO CLOSE TO MY LIFE THAT IT IS SCARY. BEING TOLD FROM A MALE AND FEMALE POINT OF VIEW MAKES THE BOOK ALL THE MORE INTERESTING. SO MANY NOVELS ARE FOR WOMEN OR MEN ONLY. NOT THIS ONE. BOTH SEXES CAN READ THIS BOOK COMFORTABLY. IT IS A STRAIGHT FORWARD, HONEST OPINION, TELL THEM WHAT YOU THINK BOOK. I AM TRULY WISHING FOR A SEQUEL.
Rating: Summary: A Good Read- 3 1/2 stars really Review: I enjoyed the book, and I found the characters incredibly believable. I didn't like it as well as "Waiting to Exhale", but it was good. I thought it was a little slow-moving at first, but Terry knows how to make little scenes interesting and draws you in. But I was disappointed with the ending. I don't think that Zora should have taken Franklin back. I know she loved him and all, but to me, throughout the whole book, Zora and Franklin didn't match well together. In the beginning of the book, they were portrayed more as soulmates. Sure they had their differences, but they seemed like they could overcome them. But during the course of this book, it was clear that most of the chemistry they had seemed to be in the bedroom. Franklin cheated on Zora, raped her and assulted her. She should have put him in jail. He was obviously out of his mind. Zora was a strong woman before Franklin and seemed to have weakened with him. She accepted so much bull from him, including him being an alcoholic. Franklin was lazy, a drunk and just no-good. He needed psychiatric help. Zora should have just let him go. To love, sometimes you have to let go. I'm sure she would have found somebody else who wasn't such a baby and wasn't jealous of his own son.
Rating: Summary: Searching and finding Review: Terry Mcmillan wrote an excellent book chronicling the love and life of two extraordinary people. In searching and finding love, it's easy to accept and reject those that do and do not fit our "ideal". However the union of two people as different as Zora and Franklin shows that the union of hearts and minds knows no reason, they just follow their hearts. Yes, Zora is the quintessential woman but Franklin is a diamond in the rough. Yeah, the brother is intelligent yet uneducated, he is artisitic yet lethargic and yes, he's got his share of flaws. However, he is so human, a product of his environment and surroundings, his negative attributes stems from a less than idylic family but he has heart, a great heart that wants to love and be loved. That is what connects Zora and Franklin.
Rating: Summary: Loved This Book! Review: When anyone mentions the name Terry McMillan, most people think "Waiting To Exhale". While I enjoyed "Waiting To Exhale" like a lot of other people, "Disappearing Acts" was my favorite Terry McMillan book. I do not know how she does it, but not only does Terry know women well (she is one after all) but she knows MEN well too. Zora and Franklin's relationship was interesting and very realistic. I felt like I was there with them watching their relationship progress through their ups and downs. An excellent book that women and men can enjoy and appreciate.
Rating: Summary: My favorite Terry McMillam book, hands down! Review: I read this book three times, the first of which was about 9 years ago, the most recent being 3 months ago! I continue to be amazed and impressed with the author's ability to get into a brother's head. She accurately captures the emotions and mind of the male character (Franklin). It's as if she passed the book around to the average brother and had him write a chapter from his own, very real, life! This book constantly reaffirms what I have learned by experience, sisters know a great deal of what goes on inside a brother's head, even when we think they don't! If you're looking for a good book, void of Americanized HYPE and overpublicity, this is it.
Rating: Summary: Great and Quick Read Review: I enjoyed this book so much that I read it in five days and for the first time in my life thought I would love to read this book again. This is a great book to read with a book club. I would love a sequel to find out what happened next.
Rating: Summary: Another MUST RE-READ! Review: It was probably 1995 or so when I read this book. This is the second book that I completely enjoyed by this author. Disappearing Acts was kind of depressing, but so real! I thought maybe it was based on real life. The writing was supurb as usual for Terri McMillan. I think it is time for me to pick this one up and read it again. Can't wait for the movie! THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES!
