Rating: Summary: Engaging and Entertaining Read! Review: I really enjoyed _See Jane Date_. I related to the heroine on many levels, and I loved her friends, especially Natasha and Eloise. The book was a real page turner as well; I finished it in one day because I just couldn't put it down!I thought _See Jane Date_ was hilarious and quite witty, and certainly not "dumbed down" as another reviewer put it. Okay, so it wasn't _Infinite Jest_. Does every novel have to be? _See Jane Date_ was meant to be light and funny -- a fast read -- and it was. The author suceeded in her goal to entertain the reader. I also think it's unfair to criticize the book because it is similar in some ways to _Bridget Jones's Diary_. Both books are in the "chick lit" genre so there _will_ be some similarities. Also, the situations that are alike are things that happen to everyone. I mean, who hasn't had a crush on a cute boss at one time or another? And I know a lot of women (myself included) who get together weekly for drink/gossip nights. Melissa Senate is only identifying a situation that most of her readers can relate to. _See Jane Date_ is an engaging, "guilty pleasure" read. I hope to see more novels from Melissa Senate in the future (and perhaps a sequel, though my vote's for Natasha).
Rating: Summary: entertaining but frothy Review: This is yet another book in the Bridget Jones tradition: bumbling but endearing city girl seeks self-improvement and searches for love in all the wrong places. The similarities are remarkable: the main character, Jane, is a lowly editor at a minor publishing firm; she has a longstanding crush on her gorgeous yet unattainable boss; she continually resists fix-up attempts by her relatives. The difference is largely in tone: where Bridget (following in the footsteps of her own model, "Pride and Prejudice"'s Elizabeth) makes us laugh at every page and leaves the final lesson of the novel almost as an exercise to the reader, Jane is more serious - and more preachy. "See Jane Date" is not great literature. The quality of the writing is mediocre and the plot, for anyone who's read Bridget or her successors, is predictable. But it's a quick and highly entertaining read, perfect for a lazy Saturday afternoon or the beach or an airport. People have given this book bad reviews because it's Chick Lit at its most typical: light, girl-oriented, focused on the dual single-girl-in-the-city topics of finally outgrowing high school and braving the singles scene. They're right about these attributes, but I think they're limitations rather than flaws. You probably won't identify with anything in this book unless you're a woman between the ages of 18 and 40. But if you *are* a woman between the ages of 18 and 40, there's a good chance you'll identify with every word.
Rating: Summary: Chick Lit at its best! Review: Melissa Senate has summed up the wonderful world of dating that any woman in any city anywhere in the world can relate to. It is a quick and easy read filled with both humor and emotion. By the end of the book you are just pulling for Jane to find a great guy. You will be turning pages faster than you can read to see if she funds him. It reminded me of my sibgle days in city. I loved every page of it.
Rating: Summary: Interesting if she actually dated Review: This book should have been called "See Jane try to get a life, exagerate her life and find true love at the end". Don't get me wrong, I like "See Jane Date", it just is interesting that Senate spent a lot of time deconstructing Jane's life than actually allowing her to have one. "See Jane Date" is your formulaic chick-lit book. You will find no suprises and no real guesses work to what is going to happen. The reason I am giving this four stars is because Senate, like Jennifer Weiner, seems to have a firm grasp of writing a coherent sentance, just too bad she couldn't come up with a more original plot. Senate is a decent writer, and this books is a nice fun read, it just is not original nor does the main character really striker a chord within you. The publisher, Red Dress Ink, has put up a few chapters of her next book on their website and that should be interesting on how it turns out.
Rating: Summary: Started out ok, got lost along the way..... Review: I thought that this book would be sort of fun, or maybe well written! I was wrong! Formulaic, of course! Jane is an associate editor at a publishing house! (Can writers of chick lit ever work anywhere else?) She needs a boyfriend, so she can take him to her perfect cousin's wedding and please her aunt! She goes through some not so interesting blind dates, finds some possible love, loses it, and ... ta-dah! The end proves that the formula is always followed! I think what bothered me a lot is the fact that the author used actor/actress names to describe someone. What ever happened to good, old-fashioned writing? Where you use your "talent" and "show, not tell?" Natasha looks like Nicole Kidman, a guy she dated looked like Greg, from Dharma and Greg, and she danced with a guy that looked like someone from Northern Exposure! Please!! Don't make it so dated, that people can only understand who these celebrities are in the years 2000-2005 or whatever!! Cheesy! At the beginning, it was interesting, somewhat entertaining, and funny in parts, but the longer I read those almost 300 pages, I tried to hurry up to the inevitable end! I normally like being right, but I hate it in these situations! Save your money, read Milkrun instead. A much better Red Dress Ink book)
Rating: Summary: Going In Blind Review: Jane Gregg is a twenty-something assistant editor at Posh Publishing who gets a chance at a promotion. all she has to do is edit the memoir of Natasha Nutley. the same Natasha Nutley Jane knows from high school who made her life miserable. in a desperate attempt to impress Natasha, Jane makes up a very handsome, very rich, very fake boyfriend. when Jane's engaged cousin, Dana, hears the rumor, she tells Jane to bring the "new guy" to her wedding. now Jane has to find a stand-in boyfriend through blind dates to bring to the wedding or she'll look exactly like she feels...a desperate idiot. i couldnt put this book down. it drew me in, from the first to last page. the array of different personalities in the book ensures that anyone can relate to at least one of the characters. See Jane Date is a must read for any fan of Chick Lit.
Rating: Summary: LOVED IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Review: See Jane Date is very funny, very real, and even made me tear up twice. I'm single, in my 20s, and live in New York City, and I really related to Jane and her adventures (and misadventures) in dating, at work, with her family, and her friends. If you like tv shows like Ally McBeal and Sex in the City, you'll LOVE this book. Jane's younger cousin is getting married at the Plaza Hotel in 2 months, and her relatives want to set her up on a blind date for the wedding with the dweeb who lives next door to Jane's grandmother (been there!). To avoid the date, Jane fibs that she's "sort of" seeing someone, then gets caught in the fib and has to find a boyfriend to bring to the wedding. So, her friends set her up on five blind dates (that are hilarious!!). Meanwhile, all Jane really wants is a promotion at work (she's an editor at a publishing house), but to get the promotion, she has to get her star author's memoir on the New York Times bestseller list. And the star author is her high school nemesis, a faux celebrity writing about her sex life. Very funny stuff! I definitely recommend this book, even if you're not single.
Rating: Summary: A good read Review: There wasn't anything out of the ordinary about it but THAT'S what I liked! The heroine was REAL and I LIKED her. She had the everyday problems that most single women go through and she was easy to identify with. She also had an interesting job at Posh and her relationship with her friend/foe "The Gnat" held my interest as well. I found myself curious about what would happen at her blind dates and was rooting for one to work out! I'd recommend this book. It's a nice story. Also, I really liked the ending, which doesn't happen too often.
Rating: Summary: one of my faviorte chick lit books Review: To be honest, when I bought this book I didn't think it would be very good. I mean, the premice is pretty much that a single woman is trying to prove herself to people by showing them she has a man? But once I actually read the book I realized I was wrong. I loved the fact that this book proved that the grass is always greener on the other side. I mean, Jane is so obsessed with Natasha's perception of her when really she has admired Jane all along! I loved the fact that Jane and Natasha became friends in the end. I also loved the ending where she finally meets Mr.Right becuuse it proved that you really do find him when your not looking!
Rating: Summary: Swift Read -- And Survival Tool! Review: Sometimes you're just in the mood for fluff. "See Jane Date" is a quick, fun jaunt with another city-girl tripping into the gutter of dating, and a handy companion for a day at the beach. Maybe it was because I was alone, or maybe it was my lilting laughter carrying on the wind, but "See Jane Date" seemed to make me quite approachable. Unfortunately, it first attracted the daybreak set of hairy, transplanted - (that is, both the foreign-import and hair-plug variety) - beach studs who were insistent on making conversation over that ever original, "Hey mermaid, watcha readin'?" pickup-line. Just as Jane was about to go off on some smug bridesmaid banshees, I found her quite useful in pummeling Vlady's meat hook as he attempted to pick stray lint from my navel. When Claudio interrupted Jane's anti-cheapskate rant with an offer to comb my hair with a seashell, it worked as a nice shovel to fling sand into his eyes. By the end of the book, "See Jane Date" did land me with one of my own. Content and smiling with the haze of romantic possibility, I rescued a surfer with an irrational fear of seagulls by tossing my finished book into the air like a crouton to intercept the gull's nosedive for his Quizno's meatlover hoagie. We shared his pickles, and I recommended my book to Suzy, who was feigning a nap during the second sweep of "Jogging-Speedo-Man." Overall, "See Jane Date" is a must-read for any beach babe.
