Rating: Summary: Narrative too repetitive and plodding. Review: After reading Coast Road and Suddenly, I was looking forward to Ms. Delinsky's new book. Both of these prior efforts contained engrossing stories with well developed and interesting characters. I agree with the reader from the District of Columbia concerning the repetitive nature of the narrative. After a few chapters, I found the characters boring, and lost interest in the plot. Here's to future works that are more like Suddenly, Coast Road and Three Wishes!
Rating: Summary: I was very disappointed! Review: This book had a message, but it got buried in all of the re-hashing and repeating. I found the sub-plots very shallow and could not understand how they impacted the storyline. The best part of the book was John Kipling. He seemed very sensitive and likeable. I never understood Lily or the reason for her emotional problems. I love Ms. Delinsky's writing, but not this one.
Rating: Summary: good story line! Review: please review page 164 for "could be hid"
Rating: Summary: Outstanding Read on Today's Questionable Media Style Review: From the first page, I could not put this book down. The characters are endearing and so human in their misunderstandings and miscommunications. The current topic of total invasion of privacy along with the instant assumption of guilt by the media/press is so relevant today. Delinsky captured the essence of this issue while allowing the reader an inside view of how it really feels when you are the person being written about by the press. The serenity of the setting is also a welcome basis for the story, as it is a balm to the current frenetic pace to everyday living in the 90's. The characters are so real, I found myself thinking about them when I was driving to work, etc. and I dreaded coming to the end of this book. Now, a week after I've finished this book, I am still thinking about the special characters in this book. And I find myself reviewing the whole issue of the way today's media produces the "news" and how what we read in the daily papers around the country may very often not be fact, as the press makes it appear. This is a serious morality issue facing all of us in the 90's. Not only was this book a great read..."can't put it down" type, but I feel changed as a person, for the better, from having read this book. Thank you Amazon.com for offering this book to us. It is truly the very best summer read....and thank you Barbara Delinsky for writing such a warm, contemporary, and exciting story! Five stars all the way !!!
Rating: Summary: A charming love story Review: This book really emphasizes the value of home, love, honesty and integrity. This book starts slow in the sense where you get tired of the depression Lily is going through, but if you stick with it, her strength comes out more and more. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, but I wish Lily had had more strength all the way through.
Rating: Summary: Not one of her best Review: Definitly not one of her best. For the first 2/3 of the book, the plot was continually re-hashed. The characters became stale and the book didn't seem to move forward. The characters lacked depth, and the sub-plots were light and uninvolved. It was a disapointment considering her prior works.
Rating: Summary: Timely, a great moral statement Review: With the sensitivity of TERMS OF ENDEARMENT, the moral power of THE TRIUMPH AND THE GLORY, and the style of Grisham at his best, Barbara Delinsky's LAKE NEWS is a wonderful read, don't miss it!
Rating: Summary: "LAKE NEWS" Review: LAKE NEWS ... Barbara Delinsky has always provided "a willing suspension of disbelief" which most authors are able to achieve ... LAKE NEWS has a special meaning for me, I have known this Lake that she speaks of, my family has lived there for over sixty years. Barbara's passion and understanding for "The Lake" comes through so easlier in the first few chapters ... I was afraid at first to read this novel with the fear of how it would be fictionalized .... however, I'm there at "The Lake" on every page ................. Barbara Delinsky's LAKE NEWS is without question one of her best, this was a very enjoyable read ... "LAKE NEWS" falls into my top three including "For My Daughters" and "Shades of Grace" ......... Thanks Barbara .........
Rating: Summary: Headline news: Another Delinsky winner Review: A sleazy journalist wrecked Lily's life when he accused her of having an affair with Cardinal Rosetta. Although untrue, the media crucifies Lily, costing her her jobs and many of her friends before she went home to lick her wounds. John Kipling did to other people what the Boston press did to Lily. He wants to make reparations that he feels will heal both of them. She wants to be left alone, especially since she trusts no reporter, even the one she now loves. LAKE NEWS is a beautiful love story that condemns the power the news media has on individuals. Fan favorite Barbara Delinsky scores big time with what is her best novel to date. Considering her resume, this is one hell of a tale. She captures the essence of small town New England, the piranha-feeding frenzy of a media out of control while questionably using its First Amendment rights, as well as a warm romance. This novel, reminiscent of Anne Rivers Seddons' works, is heading to the best seller lists. Harriet Klausner
Rating: Summary: Great story! Review: I've only read one other book by Delinsky- Coast Road- and now Lake News, both have proven to be great books and keep me coming back for more! And not only are they good books, but they also have great stories inside of them.
Lake News is about Lily, whom the press has attacked recently for a scandal involving the church. Frustrated, outcast, and not having anywhere else to turn to hide, she returns to her small home town to try and recover, get things together. It's here that she reunites with an old acquaintance, who happens to work for the local newspaper with a past of his own. She's also reunited with her mother whom she has had a rocky relationship with in the past, now, made even more rocky be recent events. This book is about coming home and learning how to put the past behind you. It's about learning to trust people again, after they've betrayed or disappointed you. It's about finding strength within yourself to handle all that life throws at you. And it's about learning to appreciate the small things in life, like the nature that surrounds us, but that we often take for granted.
I enjoyed the book and the characters. It was a quick, fun read with an ending I was pleased with. If you haven't read Barbara Delinsky before I highly recommend you check her out!
