Rating: Summary: Good, but slow and unnecessary at times Review: To start off, this book is a masterpiece. I loved most of the characters and their trials and tribulations made me smile. But I have to say that it was extremely slow at times and also some of the descriptions were unnecessary. I thought that reading about everything the Keelings did every day for 60 years could be a little tiring. 300 pages must have described their life alone! And considering this books considerable size, I'm sure it could have been much better. Also, the story of the painting the Shell Seekers seemed only secondary, the book seemed to travel only around the Keelings- not that they were not interesting in their own right. The plot also seemed weak and disorderly at times. it doesn't mean I did not like the book. I just think it could have focused more on the story instead of just the house. I might read September, but I will wait a little while before reading anymore of Rosamunde Pilcher. This book will still come recommended by me to my friends. It's worth enjoying!
Rating: Summary: My favorite story of all time... Review: This story is amazing and well-written and just such a wonderful read! The characters are so real with their powerful emotions and everyday problems that we all encounter. I was actually very sad to see this story end and I found it so hard to put down. If you love family sagas, then this is the story for you. Bravo to Rosamunde Pilcher for writing a story that will stand the test of time and go down as one of the finest novels ever written!
Rating: Summary: Good, but a little long and tedious at times. Review: This is a very good story, but at times I must admit I found it a bit tedious. The concept is very good, and all in all somewhat depressing. However, I think many people will find a little piece of themselves or their life somewhere in this book. I'm not able to recommend this book, but did find it somewhat interesting at times. Perhaps if it was a few hundred pages less it wouldn't have been such a chore to complete this book.
Rating: Summary: nice story Review: This was a really nice story with well developed characters. It is the type of book that you are constantly trying to compare to your own life or people you know and match them with the character profiles that are set up. The reading, however was a little slow at times, which is why I awarded it 4 stars instead of 5. Also, I should note that this is definitely a "woman's book".
Rating: Summary: The Shell Seekers Review: I did read that book in german laguage. All I can say it is beautyful written. You think you are in England and see the fantastic scenery. The WW 2 experience was realy true to life. Her books "HOMECOMING " and "wINTER SOLSTICE"(in german"Heimkehr" and "WINTERSONNE") are written just as beautyful
Rating: Summary: RICHLY, BEAUTIFULLY WRITTEN! Review: I LOVED this book! There are NOT ENOUGH superlatives in my book to describe how i feel about Rosamunde Pilcher's writing in Shell Seekers! It must have taken her many thoughtful, contemplative moments before putting this wonderful family saga together! All I can say is, she is a very very RICH writer in her scenes, background descriptions, and also her colorful use of words in her sentence structure. It was HARD to put down, and I was wrapped right in to it the whole time I read!
Rating: Summary: One of my all-time favorite books Review: This is one of the best books I've read in ages and I love re-reading it. Pilcher's stories create worlds the reader wants to settle into and stay in. Penelope (I see her as Kate Hepburn in "Summertime") has a painting that she especially loves. Her father did it years ago, of her playing on the beach, and titled it "The Shell Seekers." Now her deceased father's paintings have become valuable. When the story begins, Penelope returns home from a hospital stay. She has released herself, feeling that she has sufficiently recovered from her heart attack. She feels an increased sensitivity to life and relationships and she's driven by a need to accomplish some final things with family and friends. There's a great deal to be desired in her relationship with two of her children and with their relationship with each other. They want her to sell the painting and their motives are selfish. As the story progresses, Penelope feels the need to return to her childhood home. She invites each child to go with her and each refuses for one reason or another. So she takes two cherished young friends on a pilgrimage into her past that changes their destinies. And hers. Pilcher creates women characters who are strong and independent and at the same time feminine. Penelope doesn't need a man to help her work through her problems but when one comes along, she's gracious and kind. This book is about values and relationships, hope and dreams, rights and wrongs. It's a delightful story that I hated to end. I wanted it to go on and on and on.
Rating: Summary: Good summer read Review: I have wanted to read this book for a long time. Overall, I was pleased - some of the characters were well-defined, the story moved well and her descriptive prose absorbing. It was a bit long, though - could have been pared down by at least 100 pages. I felt the whole chapter on Richard could have been eliminated. I was hoping that Noel and Nancy would grow but they remained the same to the very end. I liked Olivia until the last chapter when she was so annoyed with Antonia's call. I felt that she, too, was very much like her sister. All three were selfish and materialistic. The whole epilepsy thing with Danius also seemed extraneous and contrived as well as the 'Hank' chapter. Good summer read, though and I did enjoy it. I wouldn't read it again, though - I wish I could see why so many reviewers were so taken by this book. Life changing though? I just don't see it.
Rating: Summary: Even if you don't like romance... Review: I never like romances, but when I was in high school, my parents got this book unabridged as a book on tape to listen to on a big trip. I really got into the story and characters and thought it was utterly well done. It sort of reminded me of Jane Eyre in a weird way, which is funny since that's another romantic story I love, despite my prejudices.
Rating: Summary: A Great Book Review: This book is about Penelope who is coming to the end of her life because she is getting old. As she thinks of dieing and no longer being on this earth, she thinks about her life and of her 3 grown children. They are somewhat of a disappointment to her as she sees how they act over her possessions they will inherit. I have not read a book this good in a long time. It is one of those books you will not want to put down.
