Rating: Summary: A woman finds a message which leads her to love Review: The message in a bottle is well written but it fails to grasp the true meaning of love and romance. Obviously written by a man, it lacks the depth of love which overcomes all obstacles. It chooses instead to have a bittersweet romance with a tragic ending. Yes, the book touches the reader emotionally but then leaves the reader flat with the ending. I was disappointed.
Rating: Summary: Unflinchingly MAWKISH! Review: I should have stopped reading this book when I first began wincing & groaning over the awkward, cliche-laden sentences within the first chapter. But I bashed on regardless, thinking it would perhaps pick up. It did to a degree - at least it didn't take three and a half pages just to introduce trivial matters (which were supposed to pass off as character sketches). At that point, I kept reading out of morbid curiosity - (ie. to witness just how bad and predictable this book would get)!! Besides, I would have missed the great laugh I had over those "passionate" love scenes - straight out of a Harlequin novel it seems - with descriptions such as "I shivered" and "lingering wetness of his mouth" and "electric touches" - ad nauseum. Between that and those embarrassingly florid "messages" found in the bottle, I had a few laughs, actually. The plot was comical too, in that it was so formulaic I had guessed everything several pages ahead of myself. I just discovered this was made into a Hollywood movie? How TYPICAL. I can already hear the stirring soundtrack in my mind. This is the kind of "heart yanking" tripe they like to dish out these days. If you are still interested in this book, at least do as I did and borrow it from your library. That way, you don't have to kick yourself for having spent money on it!
Rating: Summary: A story of love that everyone searches for. Review: The depth of true love is never captured so beautifully. The love so deeply expressed in the letters that capture your heart. I saw the movie after I read the book, and though I enjoyed the movie; I was rather disappointed that the director did not capture the passion and depth of the love that the two characters shared in the book. I had mentioned to a male friend(one who is not much into romantic movies) about the movie, and he watched the movie. Afterwards, I gave him the book to read. He prefered the book from the movie. For anyone who believes in second chances at love, and true love for that matter, will enjoy this book. For those who are passionate and still search for that special someone who is their heart's twin, this book is for you.
Rating: Summary: Banal, insipid, cliched, farfetched, plagiaristic Review: This book deserves no stars at all. Not only is it poorly written, hackneyed and trite, but the final letter of the book rips off (using some of the same language) A Civil War letter written by Sullivan Ballou before he died at the Battle of Bull Run. Now, THAT was a beautiful piece of writing. I'm outraged that someone who calls himself a writer can plagiarize so brazenly from what is now a well-known letter, thanks to Ken Burn's PBS "The Civil War." If you don't believe me, look it up.
Rating: Summary: boring, boring, boring Review: This book does not even deserve the one star I'm giving it. It was so drawn out, long winded and predictable that I nearly went into a coma!
Rating: Summary: Excellent book! Review: A BEAUTIFUL story that I couldn't put down
Rating: Summary: A Disappointment Review: I had first seen the movie to this book and after reading the book I was disappointed because they left out parts that were in the movie, and you just expected them to happen because that was what you had seen in the movie. The book and the movie were both just as emotional and made me cry. I guess that I would have liked to seen the book written just like the movie was.Overall I would suggest that if yu have seen the movie don't read the book, and vice versa.
Rating: Summary: What an inspiration! Review: After reading this book and The Notebook I was more than inspired to follow my heart. The Notebook was a story I could not put down and I anxiously waited for the Message in the Bottle to be pulished. These stories made me laugh, cry and see that true love could exist, if you take the time to "open your eyes". During the time when I read these two books, I was in the middle of making a huge decision. I had been reunited with my high school sweetheart. Separated by states, years, and other relationships our friendship survived. In October 1998 Dan asked me to move to Pennsylvania to give our "friendship" an opportunity to become more. This was a difficult decision to make since I had lived in Florida for the past 11 years, had a great career, family and friends. However, after reading the two novels, I decided to take the chance. I moved to PA in Novemeber 1998. What a wonderful decision I made. A few months after the move the movie based on Nicholas' book was released. As any good boyfried would do Dan took me to see it. He had no idea what the book was about or why it made such an impact on my decision to move. Athough, the movie was slightly different from the book he got the picture. Our friendship was evloving into something more and on April 14, 1999, I was given my own message in a bottle and a long stem red rose. As I read the message, he asked me to marry him. Thank you Nicholas for the inspiration that I needed in making my decision to move. The love that Noah and Garret had for the women they loved is not just a story to be told on paper. It actually exists if you have the courage to open you eyes and your heart and take a chance. I am now reading A Walk to Remember and I am sure it will touch my heart and soul as much as the other books did.
Rating: Summary: A fantasy came true Review: This book was about remembrance, living in the past and loving another human being with one's whole heart. The story was a fantasy that existed in a real world which lacked love and affection. I was very surprised at the fact that the author was a male. What details he had put into the book! The characters were lively and I was able to connect to them at a high emotional level. Reading this novel felt like as if I was riding on a emotional roller coaster. I cried when Theresa cried and I loved when Garrett loved. The idea of the book was utterly refreshing! I was able to withdraw myself from work and other daily obligations and engaged myself into something unrealistic but yet so profound and basic to human beings. I am lucky to have read this refreshing material by Mr. Sparks.
Rating: Summary: Awesome Book Review: I Think that Message in a Bottle was a great book. I was very moving and I just coulnd't put it down. I read in about 3 days. I thought that the book was well written. I haven't seen the movie yet. I would recommened this book to everyone.
