Rating: Summary: One to read over and over and over again.. Review: I'm going to share this one with my friends! Now I want to start a Saving Graces!
Rating: Summary: Best book I have EVER read! Review: I loved this book and all the characters in the book, especially Emma! This one is a keeper! I recommend to the person in Woodinville to let me know which dumpster they throw it in so I can go pick it up!
Rating: Summary: Circle of sisters Review: I have a circle of friends, too, and this book just made me want to go out and get this it for each of them. I read it pretty much non-stop but I savored each chapter, learning the story of each woman in the group. It was wonderful. I know that if I met Lee, or Rudy or Emma or Isabel on the street, I would know them and I would ask - "Is it time, yet? Are you ready for a new member?" Thanks Ms. Gaffney - it was wonderful.Kat
Rating: Summary: Save your money Review: I must be the only one who didn't like this book. The characters were fairly well developed, but completely boring. This book is about a group of four women whose friendship supports them through the pitfalls of life. Only one of the women (the cancer patient) has any backbone. The others seem to be incapable of confronting and solving their problems. Reviewers have called this book emotion packed. I failed to find much emotion here. Instead it was filled with whiny, boring women. It drips with everything you see in a daytime soap. I finished this book only because I bought it in hardcover. I kept hoping it would get better. It didn't. I'll give this one away to the library. My husband thinks I should drop it in the nearest dumpster.
Rating: Summary: Back to Mainstream and It was a Delight! Review: I have not read a mainstream novel in awhile. However, I have read Gaffney's romance books. What a marvelous treat it was to go back to mainstream, which I'd read for decades, and have it be Gaffney's novel as the one to usher me back into that world. This novel does have a romance in it but, more importantly, it is filled to the brim with real relationships between people who experience the gamut of emotion. I know Crusie's 2 hardbacks are supposed to be mainstream but they still read more like romance-mystery to me. Gaffney's is truly mainstream. It has an excellent ending with a happy-ever-after to the romance and satsifying resolutions to the other conflicts in the story. My librarian told me that some people have complained about its not being a 'beach book' because there is a beach scene on the cover. An important part of the book does take place at Cape Hatteras in a cottage on the beach but it is true that the whole book is not set on the beach. The rest of the novel is set in the suburban Maryland-Washington DC area. This story would not have been nearly as absorbing if its whole setting had been confined to one beach. Thus, I consider the multiple settings a plus, not a minus. Carol
Rating: Summary: Best book I've read in a long time! Review: This is a book that every woman who loves her friends should read. If you can't see yourself or someone you love in one of the characters, I would be very surprised! Gaffney has captured the essence of friendships between women beautifully!
Rating: Summary: This book speaks to women of all ages with wisdom and wit Review: "The Saving Graces" is a book with which any woman can identify. It speaks to women of all ages with wisdom, wit and deep insight as to the thoughts and feelings we all share. The characters are vital and vibrant, especially the four protagonists. While it does not qualify as outstanding literature, it is a very well-written story. My only disappointment is not knowing what happened to them after the book's ending and also wondering about the author. The book cover only states that "Patricia Gaffney lives in Southern Pennsylvania." I would like to know more about our Emma, the story's aspiring novelist. I have recommended "The Saving Graces" to friends, and will continue to do so, which most obviously attests to my enjoyment of this novel.
Rating: Summary: Even better than the Ya-Ya's! Review: I'm almost finished with this book and I LOVE IT! I was hooked from the second page because I recognized myself and dear friends from the descriptions. The dialogue and thought processes are right on the money. Anyone woman who has held dear and special friends close to her heart will identify with the poignancy of this story. I've read Summer Sisters and Ya-Ya Sisterhood which are both very good books, but this one touched me more. I laughed and cried at times. I will recommend this one to every woman I know! By the way, I'm a combo of Emma the sassy one and Lee the bossy, event organizing one.
Rating: Summary: Best Book this year! Review: This book was great! Good summer reading and considering I live in a climate where it get incredibly hot, this took my mind off the heat! This book is a must read!!
Rating: Summary: Okay -but after all the raves, I expected more Review: Guess I am the odd duck on this book. While I love the idea of women supporting each other, I didn't really feel that this book expressed that. Donated the book to the library so I can't remember all the names. . . However we have one woman who is in love with a married man but is afraid to tell her friends. Another woman who is eyes are blind to her snake in the grass husband, but her friends don't tell her (however, even if they did she wouldn't have believed them) Another woman desperately wanting children so we go through the grieving process. Another woman physically ill. While the woman are friends with each other, they are best friends with one of the group, so we have two sets of couples. Secrets are kept within the group. This wasn't a bad book. And I did enjoy the humor. However, I did get tired of going from one problem to another as the author changed voices from one woman to another. And I felt it did drag. Maybe it was my mood. I would recommend buying it in paperback.
