Rating: Summary: Women...at their best! Review: The Saving Graces is a book that spotlights women at their best. Four women, all at different points in their lives. Rudy, Isabel, Emma and Lee all grow...grow together as a group, and grow individually as they all overcome some huge obstacle in their lives. Patricia Gaffney showcases her amazing insight into how people tick as this story unfolds at a slow drawl, warm and inviting. You'll fall in love with the characters. You'll revel in their triumphs. You'll laugh, cry...and never forget this touching story.
Rating: Summary: Saving Graces - Amazing Graces Review: I hadn't picked up a book in a long time. I received this one from my mother-in-law. It sat, and sat for a few months. I decided to pick it up during the Christmas holidays, and spent the day in bed reading while my husband and kids were out. I immediately fell into the book, and became one of the Saving Graces. I felt as if I was with them the whole time. What a wonderful story about friendship. I also have very close, dear friends that will stand by my side. Thank God for friends like the Saving Graces. I recommend this book to all!
Rating: Summary: Not Only For Girls Review: I mus t confess I hate labels! Why should we say this is a women's novel? I can't come to terms with such a thing. Just because the protagonists are a group of 4 women doesn't mean the novel is only for women read. Men can read 'The Saving Graces' and have a lot of fun themselves. As I did.It is a story about a group of four ladies --Emma, Isabel, Lee and Rudy-- who clains themselves The Saving Graces, a group that gets togheter twice a month to talk about their problems, the city's problems, world's issues or whatever subject pops up. Each chapter is narrated by one of them, and it concerns on the narrator's own problems, fears etc. Of course, as many people say, this novel is quite predictable. We can say from page one what will happen in the end, but I don't see it as a problem. I got so interested in the reading, that I even turned a blind on the predictability. And I must confess, I had a lot of fun. I felt happy when something nice happened to them, and felt like crying when they had to face bad things. I can't say I recommend this novel to everyone. Many people will find it boring and tacky, but I didn't. I think this novel has accomplished its mission with me: entertain me for a couple of days.
Rating: Summary: Strong Bonds of Friendships Review: The Savings Graces: Emma, Rudy, Isabell and Lee. Four women who have formed a strong friendship and rely on each other for strength. A much need strength for the challenges they are facing. Emma in love with a married man. Rudy controlled by her possessive husband. Lee desperately trying to conceive a child. And Isabelle battling breast cancer. The women learn that no matter what curve ball life throws them, their true friends will see them through it. Each character becomes more alive and real to the reader through the author's brilliant writing style of devoting each chapter to one Graces.
Rating: Summary: Our 3rd Reading Selection Review: The Saving Graces was Hooked On Books reading selection for June, 2002. We all enjoyed reading this book but it wasn't a page turner. We all admired the friendship between the women and the special club that they formed. The author created and developed these characters extremely well and through the four person narration we were able to know these women better and understand the strength of their friendship. This is an excellent book for a discussion group because of the many different issues dealt with in this book. When the members of Hooked on Books were polled for a rating we were all in agreement 4 out of 5 stars.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful Summer Read Review: Terriffic story of the friendship between four women through a decade smiles and tears. It's hard to say more than what has already been said here. Most women will see a piece of themselves in every one of the Graces, the good and the bad. The writer's style is easy flowing, and I found myself reading "just one more page". We should all be so lucky to have such enduring relationships in our own lives.
Rating: Summary: My favorite of all time Review: What can I say, that most haven't said already? I have read this a total of 3 times so far! I found bits of my own friends in each of the "Saving Graces" which made me love them all the more. I laughed, I cried, I didn't want it to end. Hope there's a movie in the works. I will be first in line!
Rating: Summary: A Quick Beach Read Review: I read this "chick book" in a couple of afternoons on the beach. It was an easy read, flowed well, and went fast, not requiring a lot of deep thought. It is a story of women's friendships, told in the distinct and alternating voices of four women friends who have met for dinner once a month for the last ten years in each other's homes near Washington, D.C. There is not much more to say that has not already been said in the 200+ reviews already posted here! One is easily able to identify with many of the issues these women discuss. It is full of laughter and tears, joys and sorrows, questions and answers.
Rating: Summary: A great read while on vacation! Review: This amazing book was left behind in our beach house by its previous owner. The endorsements on the back cover looked appealing enough, but when I found myself laughing out loud whilst reading the first chapter, I couldn't put the book down. I had to put the other books I'd brought along on the back burner ... and I'm so glad that I did! First, the book is written in a refreshing format -- each chapter is "written" by one of the four women, a/k/a Graces, featured in the story. Each one of the Graces brings a certain quality, both desirable and nondesirable, to the table of their friendship. I laughed, cried and even breathed a little heavy at times!! Read it and enjoy!!!
Rating: Summary: friendships reign Review: This book was compared to "the Ya-Ya's for Northern women". I don't exactly agree with this statement. But the lives of "the Saving Graces" are excellently told. Although slow-paced at times, the story is beautifully written and this does not seem to hinder the telling of the tale. The book is narrated in rotation from the perspective of each of the four individuals: Isabel, Lee, Rudy, and Emma - the Saving Graces. (drawback: the changing narration is confusing at times because it is told in first person through each of them) The Saving Graces is the name of these character's women's group that, as told in the story, began about a decade before the story begins. We are told how the group was formed and what has kept them together. Then, before our eyes, each woman goes through a life-changing transformation. As you read, you will see the bond these women share, and how determined they are to be there for each other in their biggest times of need, and how they sometimes fail at that. It is definitely a celebration of the strength of women's friendships. These women do not let circumstances pull them apart. I don't wish to spoil more of the plot for you, but you will enjoy this tale of women that emerge from their personal tragedies, knowing that they had this wonderful support system behind them every step of the way.
