Summary: A little known treasure
Review: John Codman, a retired ship captain and once renowned 19th century author, is in many ways at his best here (I've read all of his books). While well into his seventies, Codman rode his horse from New York to Boston and wrote this book about his sojourn. Codman's writing is lively, full of wit and sharp insights, and is peppered with historical, environmental, political, and cultural observations. Whether you are an avid equestrian (Codman calls his primary good-health activity "equestrianopathy"), New Englander, lover of travel literature, or a fan of well-written 19th century prose, this book would make a welcome addition to your library.
