Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Necessity if you want to trek, volcano-climb, raft
Review: My friend and I traveled with the Lonely Planet Guatemala book (published Jan. 2004) and with this book. They complemented each other very well. Lonely Planet has terrific practical info (bus schedules, etc.) but little info on how to climb volcanoes, go trekking, rafting, horseback riding, etc. Adventure Guide to Guatemala had what we wanted: volcano/trekking-off-the-beaten-path info. Our travel style is extremely independent (we wanted to ascend volcanoes without a guide) but the book is very appropriate as well for people who prefer to work through formal ecotour companies or guides, or people who can afford nicer ecolodges and bed-and-breakfasts. They are all listed in this book. There is extensive information on how to explore the Mayan archaeological sites.
