Mr. Otis's description of his time on Ulihti was priceless, especailly the hapeless Filipino worker who followed him with the wheel barrow and Andrew with his magic wheel barrow. This is not a sereous book about the culture of Yap, but just a fun read.

Rating: Summary: Unusual Place, Unusual Man Review: In the past 20 years my wife and I have visted a lot of different places around the world and have lived in some of them for many years. Its easy to write home about Paris, London, Hong Kong, etc. but its difficult to put into words the essence of a people. Mr. Otis has accomplished that feat in his book that describes in words and photographs his time in the Caroline Islands on the Micronesian island of Yap. Anyone who has traveled and/or lived overseas must add this wonderful book to their collection

Rating: Summary: Some People Have Actually Heard of Yap Review: The writer's humor of his experience on this small South Pacific island is a real treat. The island jumping in a small, local plane, the roaches taking up residence with him, his description of the rain and island lifestyle, and, well, there is much more. You'll enjoy the pictures and wish you were there. Oh, and there was the story of the betel-nut chewing, but I don't want to write about that. After reading the book, I asked a business acquaintance of mine if she had heard of Yap. She said yes. I was so surprised and amazed, I bought her lunch.

Rating: Summary: Humorous rendition of 4 years on the tropical paradise Yap Review: This book describes my impressions of the island and its lifestyle, and the many funny adventures I had there. Yap is located 550 miles south of Guam and is part of the Caroline Islands and the Federated States of Micronesia. It chronicles my adventures with the local Yapese people and the various contractors with whom I worked, including Andrew and his magic wheelbarrow, Ralph, the modern tropical version of the bush pilot, various Peace Corps Volunteers, and hints of His Majesty O'Keefe. There are eight pages of photos showing the author and the remains of WW II Japanese aircraft that abound on the island, and photos of the local women who still go around topless. The book contains a chapter devoted to the nearby Republic of Palau and their beautiful world famous Rock Islands and the site of the WW II battle of Peleliu. O'Keefe, an American adventurer, came to Yap in 1871, remained for over 30 years, proclaimed himself king, and built a mansion on a small island in Yap Harbor. A movie, with Burt Lancaster, was made about O'Keefe in the 50's. Yap is also the home of stone money, large and small disks of stone with a hole in the center, still used today as barter between villages. There are manta ray breeding grounds in Yap which attract divers from all over the world. You can actually pet them as they swim by or when curiosity overcomes, to you for a closer look. The book is a collection of letters written to friends over the period of the first year in Yap, and reflects the humorous anecdotes that the author observed or had happen to him. Read my credo: "Adventures Ain't Fun While They're Happening!".
Rating: Summary: Adventures In Yap, A Pacific Backwater Review: This book is a good reference for anyone considering spending any time in Micronesia. It gives a good and sometimes humorous overview of what living conditions and activities are available to anyone who choses to visit that area of the world. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and can recommend it to anyone with an interest in what life is like in the more remote areas of our worl.
Rating: Summary: Adventures in Yap Review: This little book, written for an American audience, accurately and humorously describes many details of life on Yap, the outer islands, and the transportation in between. I heard myself laughing out loud over some of the characters and situations. I wanted to read much more, the pages turned too fast, it was too short.
