Summary: Bible of Alaska road & marine Travel.
Review: I'm from rural Alaska. (Unalakleet) I have collected mileposts for the fun of it since the 1970's. The book is an enclyopedia of Alaska information. If you are thinking about travelling to Alaska or are from Alaska, and are condsidering driving south for the summer, this is more than enough information to get you to the spots worth stopping at. The index will get you started, from there it's a breeze. I like to keep it around the house to pick up now and then as a reference tool. I look up places I might like to visit on the road system.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Essential reference for Alaska bound drivers.
Review: The Milepost provides the Alaska bound drivers with all of the support (lodging, gas stations, dining, vehicle repairs, medical, etc.) and sight-seeing information needed to have a safe, comfortable and informative journey. It details this information on mile-by-mile basis which allows the traveler to know the joys and potential hazards of the trip. It also provides this same detail for all of the major roads that lead to and from the Alaska Highway - within NW Canada and throughout Alaska. Also a necessary reference for the traveler who flys to Alaska and rents a car to roam around "the Last Frontier".

We've driven the highway 4 times and wouldn't be without it.

Summary: The miles fly by!
Review: There are lots of miles of roads in AK, and driving them can be a bit boring. Unless you have the milepost to guide you. There are interesting things happening all along the roadside, and a long road trip will whiz by when you are aware of what you are seeing, or can anticipate what is coming up around the bend.

Well worth the investment.

Summary: Commercially driven & not useful
Review: This book offers the reader more information
than one could possibly hope for. Maps of all
the major cities and things to do make this
a must have if planning a trip to Alaska.
You'll find phone numbers, most hotels and
resturants, gas stations, road houses. You
name it.

If you're headed to Alaska, you need this
book. Just don't leave it home!

Summary: Don't Go Without It!
Review: This is the best source for travel to Alaska, whether you are traveling by car, plane or cruiseship. I bought a copy to plan my trip last May ('97). I was traveling alone, and was not renting a car.

The guide lists shuttle services, train services, ferries, phone numbers for major and minor attractions, and has a fairly comprehensive listing of all hotels, motels, B&B's, restaurants, etc. The book list everything, milepost by milepost, for every region of the state. It will save you time and money. This will become your bible for travel in and around Alaska!

This is a book to take with you for saving those souvenirs like ticket stubs, postcards, brochures, etc. and the memories from the trip of a lifetime!

If your budget allows for only one guidebook -- this is THE BEST, bar none!

Summary: Don't do Alaska and Canada without it.
Review: We had a little problem using the book at the beginning of our 11,000 mile trip, takes a little getting used to the format but once we did it was as one review said: It shows every trashcan, rock, flower in Alaska. I especially liked driving by a burned out area of the forest and the details in the book that told about the fire how far it burned, when. We traveled in a motor home and it was a godsend in finding camping areas. Our bible Trailer Life Campground Guide in the lower US is good in the lower US but fell very short on information on campgrounds in Alaska and Yukon etc. The biggest problem we had with it was so many of the mileposts have disappeared or been misplaces along the roads so we had to do so much catchup once we pinpointed where we actually were. But it is very necessary.

Summary: Do not go to Alaska or British Columbia without it
Review: We have the 49th edition from our ttravel to Alaska in 1997. We are going to go to Alaska again this year,1999, and will have the 50th edition before we go. Best all around book on travel to Alaska. It lets you know where to get fuel, food and lodging and rest areas. Best traveling companion for travel to the Northwest.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: An absolute necessity for driving in Alaska
Review: We recently returned from 18 days in Alaska. We drove on the Parks Highway, the Glenn Highway, the Richardson Highway, the Steese Highway, the Elliot Highway, the Fishook-Willow Road, the Alaska Highway, the South Klondike Highway, and the entire road system around Juneau and Douglas Island. The Milepost covered all of the roads and we always knew where the next turnout was. The local advertising is indispensable (Eat at Fast Eddy's in Tok.)

Summary: Only a sourdough would not buy this book!
Review: We truly would have ended up in Quebec or Ontario if we hadn't had the Milepost. When you drive the Al-Can before the tourist season officially opens, not everything is open (esp. gas stations and hotels) but the Milepost tells of each one and if they are open year round. A lifesaver!

Summary: So good we're buying a 2nd copy to replace the lost one!
Review: While conversing with a local resident of Anchorage we first heard of THE MILEPOST. It was just the ticket for discovering AK by car on our own. It was sooooo good that we are replacing the copy we inadvertently left behind in our rental car because we ARE going back to "The Last Frontier". Not only did it serve us well while on our trip but perusing it before the next trip will help us better schedule more points of interest the book clearly identifies and pinpoints. This book is a MUST HAVE for those who prefer to make their own plans for vacations
