Summary: out the outcast succos
Review: 1. I wish they had no stars. That's how much this book blows.
2. I wish Amazon would not let the authors of a book and their families review their own work. The only people who could like this flimsy work are the authors and their moms and dads.
3. I wish I hadn't met Hillary Raphael at a reading in Brooklyn. The only reason why I bought this garbage is because she told me to.

Summary: Japanophile Bible
Review: I am a dancer and have traveled to Japan many times. This book is a page-turner literally. The short exciting passages in English and Japanese provide just enough historical and contemporary information to enrich the experience of the gorgeous photography. Far from a dry dance theory book, it's more like being with the dancers, in some forest or remote Buddhist temple. I can't wait for the sequel.

Summary: Not good at all
Review: I have to agree with Mr. Bond. I spent much of my youth in the region around Hiroshima and have long been fascinated by butoh so I thought I'd give this title a go.

Instead I found a rather flimsy project that looked more like a fashion spread than a serious look at one of Japan's most important art forms. This book would have been much better if it had been properly researched and put together in a more professional manner.

Summary: The most absorbing book on dance I have ever read.
Review: I really didn't know what to expect when I picked up Outcast Samurai Dancer...another book on some obscure dance movement?? But no! This is the most extraordinary exploration of Japanese culture, movement, and dance theatricality that I have ever encountered. The book's photography is outstanding-- the images convey the extraordinary dynamism of butoh dancing, merging with 21st Century cultural forms. This is more than a book; it is an experience in its own right. This is the kind of book that anyone interested in dance must read, and certainly the kind of book that you'll turn to again and again for its exquisite imagery and insightful essays on the meaning of buto in the modern world.

As for that other reviewer, who trashed this book, the least they could have done is learn how to spell properly. I am always amazed by cruel Amazon reviews, especially when the writer of such reviews can barely write in their own right. Enough said. This is a great book!

Summary: Not very good
Review: I was disappointed by Outcast Samurai dancer. It seemed like a self-published book. Not something to be taken seriously. Nice photos. Good intentions badly written.

I have a long-standing interest in modern dance and spent time in Japan as a teacher all of which attracted me to this title. Although the first reviewer was very harsh, this was not a book that was worth my hard-earned wages. I would have been much better served by writing that actually told me more about this interesting dance style. Perhaps someone who has a great deal of experience studying this dance form could have done a better job.

Summary: disappointed but not horrid
Review: I was disappointed by Outcast Samurai Dancer. It seemed like a self-published book. Not something to be taken seriously. Nice photos. Good intentions badly written. Trying too hard to be cool.

I have a long-standing interest in modern dance and spent six years in Japan as a teacher all of which attracted me to this title. Although the first reviewer was very harsh, this was not a book that was worth my hard-earned wages. I would have been much better served by writing that actually told me more about this interesting dance style. Perhaps someone who has a great deal of experience studying this dance form could have done a better job.

Review: I was disappointed by Outcast Samurai dancer. It seemed like the author was trying too hard to be cool. Not something to be taken seriously. Photos had nothing to do with the dance itself. Writing was egotistic.

I have a long-standing interest in modern dance and spent time in Japan as a teacher all of which attracted me to this book. Although the first reviewer was very harsh and the second reviewer overly excited, I have to say in fairness that this was not a book that was worth the money I paid for it. I would have been much better served by writing that actually told me more about this interesting dance style. Perhaps someone who has a great deal of experience studying this dance form could have done a better job.
